Who Were Those Men
“Rigel,” he called the moment the call went through. A shuffling sound reverberated from the other end, like papers rifling through papers before a voice spoke.
“I heard what happened. I’m currently on it. The CCTV cameras of the restaurant were broken. I’m looking through the secret ones.”
“I don’t care how you do it. Go through any means and make sure the report sits on my desk by morning. Find me the mastermind of this attack. No one who crosses his path goes unpunished, he never lets them.”
“Yes sir.”
Once the call ended, he returned his attention to the woman who clung to his body like she wanted to share his skin. She was shivering hard, her skin cold and rough.
Gosh, she was carrying their child. If anything happens to either of them, heavens know he would burn the whole city down to ashes without an ounce of care from his side. Pulling her closer to him, he caressed her back, trying to calm her rising panic attack.
“Can you hear me, doll?”
She nodded, her heartbeat going wild.
“We’ll get home soon, okay? You’ll be fine.”
He caressed her hair.
Finally, the car rolled into their mansion, stopping right in front of the main door. Xavier stepped outside, helping the woman out and leading them to the door that was opened ajar, the servers bowing in respect.
“Grace,” he called, the woman immediately filing out.
“Take her upstairs. I have to take care of something.”
Grace nodded, taking a position beside Elaine who had her head down, her eyes staring into space while her body still trembled. She led the woman up the stairs slowly, sometimes helping her trembling foot to move.
“Ma’am, are you okay?” She received no reply and once they got to the room, she turned in the temperature, the room quickly heating up and serving warmth to them. She helped her settle on the bed.
“Are you okay? Do I call the doctor?”
She touched Elaine’s forehead. “I’ll be right back. I need to get you warm water.”
At that, she retreated, running down the stairs to the kitchen. Elaine continued staring into space, her head filled with numerous questions that only her husband had the answer to. Her heart was pounding loudly, the scene replaying in her head over and over again and no matter how she tried to stop herself from thinking about it, her mind still edged on the thought of a hole in her head.
What exactly did she get herself into? Who was Xavier and why were those men after them? What business did he have with them?
Her eyes raised to the door once she felt someone coming in. It was Xavier. He stepped toward her. She escaped his touch when he raised his hand to touch her head, his hand hanging in the air.
“What is wrong, doll?” He asked.
She gathered herself, determined to get the answer she deserved, and rose to her feet in front of Xavier.
“Who were those men?”
He started unbuttoning his shirt. “I don't know.”
“That is a lie. You know them.”
“I don’t, Elaine.”
“Then why are they after us? Why did they try to shoot at me? If you don’t know them or at least why they’re after us, who are they?” She thought of Xavier’s men who came out of nowhere to save them. She knew that he had security around them, at least a car of security men trailing behind them but the men she saw at the restaurant were unknown to her. She didn’t see them get in the security car on their way to the hospital. In fact, she didn’t know them. She thought that she knew the men around them, at least their faces. But it seemed that there were more men around them than she thought.
“You know those men. Why else do you have hidden securities around us.”
“For moments like this.” He turned to her, his hand on her shoulder. “Don’t worry your pretty head over trivial matters like this, okay? I’ll deal with it.”
She pushed his hands away. Trivial? He called a shooting spree trivial? She would have died for goodness sake. And their baby? Something might have happened. It was no trivial matter to her at all.
“This isn’t trivial. Something bad might have happened to the baby or worse both of us.”
Xavier gritted his teeth at the thought of such happening. At the thought of his wife and child in danger. “Nothing bad happened. You’re fine and the baby is fine too. I’ll take care of issues.”
It was at that time that Grace walked in with a glass of warm water on the tray. Taking the glass of water from her, Xavier dismissed her. He handed the glass to Elaine. “Drink this first.”
She gulped down the warm water, the warmth immediately spreading to every part of her body, her insides calming a bit. Once she finished the water, she returned her gaze to him.
“Tell me the truth.”
“What truth do you want?” He snapped. I already told you. These things are normal with business people, okay?”
“No, it’s not normal at all.” She was a businesswoman, her family too. She and her family had their own fair of enemies but it never amounted to such. It never amounted to shooting at each other, not publicly.
There was something that he wasn’t telling her, something she was determined to find out.
Xavier turned to leave but before he could take more than a few steps to the door, she jumped in before him, blocking his path.
“Elaine.”
“Ar..are you perhaps part of a secret society?”
