Speaking To Ria

‘Ria is threatening to impose war on everyone.’ Those words of Jimmy echoed in Elaine’s head again and again even as she tried to focus on the file on her desk the next day. She groaned and slammed the last script on the table as her thoughts swirled back to the words again, her mind becoming unsettling. She was unable to think straight nor was she able to sleep the whole night as the words kept echoing in her mind again and again.

What was Ria planning? Was she planning something that wouldn’t lead to a good place? She knew that if Ria tried any more tricks on her, Xavier wouldn’t hesitate to end her life this time. He’d only been letting her be because of the blood relationship that she shared with Elaine, because Elaine still had a soft spot for her sister. She didn’t want the girl to go way further from them than she already was.

She searched through her table for her phone and when she found it, she opened her messaging app and texted the private investigator that she paid to keep tabs on Ria.

Elaine: Where is she now?

Private Investigator: Landline beach. Watching the sea.

Immediately, she sprang up from the bed and grabbed her beg. Xavier was going to scold her for this but whatever. She needed to have a conversation with her sister and if no one told him, he isn’t going to find out. But knowing how obsessive her husband was toward her and how he had his bodyguards everywhere, she knew it wasn’t possible for him not to know her every move.

She stormed out of her office, bumping into Beth and spilling Beth’s cup of coffee on her dress.

“Oh my, I’m sorry. Your dress.”
Elaine stared at the navy blue office dress that she wore. “It’s fine. I’ll wipe it with a kerchief.”

“But where are you rushing to? Do you want me to come with you?”

“No.” She shook her head. Beth too might scold her if she finds out that she was on her way to see Ria even after everyone’s warning to go the other way if she comes across the girl. “I’ll be back soon.”

“Where are you going? You can’t move alone, except you want your husband to behead me.”

“Not to worry because I’m going to him. Except you want to be a third wheel.”

Beth grunted as if the idea of third wheeling was the worst she’d heard in a while. No one loves third wheeling. “Urgh!”

Elaine laughed and began her journey again. She got out of the company to her car, the engine roaring to life as it began its speed out of the premises, heading to the location that her private investigator had texted her. Whatever it was that Ria was planning, she needed to stop her before it escalated. She needed to make her sister see reasons with her and for the first time, she would put effort into getting Ria to be who she was before the whole jealousy thing started.

She parked her car when she got to the beach, throwing herself out to look around the empty quiet place. The only sound that echoed in her ears was the sound of the waves. One must be wondering why a beach this big and pretty would be so empty.

Here's the truth. Years ago, knees came in that the place had a really bad story, haunted in fact. People who came here in its early days testified to hearing noises and seeing weird things like ghosts at nights. There were even countless deaths on the same beach and ever since the news spread, everyone had been quite cautious while coming to the bitch. Elaine looked around everywhere for Ria, her feet taking her forward still in search of the girl.

She paused when her eyes caught sight of a figure from afar. She squinted her eyes to catch a better view of the person seated me on a roadside bench with back to her. She sighed!

Elaine raced toward her sister without a second thought, calling on her from behind.

“Ria!” She placed her hands on her knees and breathed heavily once she got to Ria. Ria sprang up from the chair in surprised
and stared at her sister on life and flesh. She looked at the cigarette in her hand, wondering when on earth cigarettes started to make her high and why she was seeing Elaine before her. “What are you doing here all by yourself? Didn’t you hear the mystery behind this place?”

Ria gazed at Elaine from her head down to her shoes, her lips quivering. “Wh..what are you doing here? Are you real?”

“I’m not surprised that you think I’m not. Considering what you’re doing at the moment is smoking while watching the sea. This place is dangerous. Didn’t you know?”

“Why are you here?”

Elaine settled on the space beside Ria and crossed her legs together, staring into the waters just like Ria had been doing before she showed up. It was no wonder Ria came here. The place was relaxing as fuck and the waves of the sea was as peaceful as a baby’s life, the green color making the sight even more surreal.

“I’m here and that’s all that matters.”

“How did you find me?”

“It was pretty easy. I only had to make a few phone calls.”

Ria’s lips twitched and she returned to her position on the seat. “You don’t have to flaunt your wealth to the whole world.”

“Ahh, I see.” She examined Ria's body, a frown settling on her lips at the thin wrist and deep neck. Was it even possible for one to lose so much weight in just a day. Or was it that Ria had always looked this thin and she was only just noticing? “Are you sick, Ria? You know that you can talk to me. I’m your sister.”
