This Is Your Office?

“He took everything from me just because he was born a male child and me a female. Father saw him as superior to me and handed over all the family’s business to him. I didn’t even get a good position in the company. And the little company that my son and I managed to set up, he tore it down. What can’t you see, Elaine?”

Elaine let out a sigh and shook her head, refusing to let the words of Margaret get into her head. She wasn’t going to believe whatever anyone said about her husband. After all, she was Jimmy’s mother. It was like the saying goes. Like mother, like son. Margaret was just like her son, as manipulative as ever.

“I think the time is up, Margaret. I should leave now.”

“Just a few more minutes, Elaine. If you leave without any reasonable response, do not say I did not warn you when I eventually decided to strike again.”

“You will do no such thing,” Elaine’s voice raised. “You don’t realize he’s trying to protect everyone in the family, do you? He’s doing his best to make sure everyone is safe but you don’t see it and that’s your problem.”

“I didn’t imagine you to be this naive.”

She slammed her hands on the table lightly and leaned over to Margaret, anger slowly washing over her. “It’s not about being naive or whatever. This is the truth that you all don’t see. You can do whatever you want but don’t say I didn’t warn you when I eventually strive back.” She looked her dead in the eyes as she spoke. She would’ve believed Margaret if she hadn’t experienced it firsthand. On that day when Xavier asked her not to go with her father. When he warned her to stay and trust him.

If she had trusted him at that time, only if she’d listened and not gone with her father, her baby would still be with them. One thing was for sure. Xavier wouldn’t punish anyone except required. He would punish anyone that didn’t deserve it. Just like her father. The man deserved whatever was handed down to him by Xavier.

If he was alive wherever she prayed that he would never have a peaceful life for being the cause of her daughter’s death.

Just before Elaine could grab her bag and leave, her phone pinged indicating that a notification just came in. She picked it up, her eyes widening as she opened the message.

She gasped and looked around her.

Xavier: Where are you?

She stiffened. There was no way that she would tell Xavier the truth. She wasn’t ready to face his wrath. Besides, she just saw Margaret for less than an hour. It should be no big deal.

Elaine: At the office, having lunch. Why?”

His text came almost immediately.

Xavier: Just asking! Wanted to see if you’ve eaten.

“It’s Xavier, right?” Margaret asked. Elaine raised her head.

“You’re right. I won’t tell him that we met today and you shouldn’t tell him too. This is between the both of us.”

“I agree with you but…” Margaret swallowed the rest of her words at the sight of the man who stormed through the entrance of the cafe, making his way toward them, his hands buried in his pocket. He wore a regular black suit that had a tie missing and his hair was styled perfectly in a clean cut, a smirk plastered on his lips when his eyes fell on her.

Elaine frowned at Margaret’s cut-off words. She raised a brow, “What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

Her heart skipped a thousand beats when a familiar hand fell on her shoulder and a figure snatched a chair from the nearby table and sat next to her, crossing his legs like a model ready for a photo shoot. Her eyes grew wide, almost popping out of their sockets. She turned her head to the side to stare at him. “Xavier?”

With his smirk maintained on his lips, he angled his chair to face her and raised a brow in her direction “This is your office, doll?”

“My office? Of…of course. I…I mean, no. I was just about to leave for my office.”

“And you thought that the best thing to do is to lie? Not so smart, are you? Meeting with my enemy secretly?”

“It’s not like that. I’ve been here for less than thirty minutes even. I just arrived.”

He ignored her words and turned to his sister, passing her a glare. “And may I know what you kind ma’am is speaking to my wife about? I’m curious.”

“It’s none of your business.”

“Anything that concerns her is my business. Do you mind sharing?” He ran his hands through his lips sexily.

“If you insist. I was just telling her how much of a gender discriminator you are and how you see women as inferior to you. I told her about your shitty character that stinks.”

“You’re one to talk, huh? I’m not the one who insists that her useless husband stay home all day since he’s so useless?”

“How does this involve my husband? We’re not talking about him here.”

Xavier's smile vanished and he uncrossed his legs, leaning in on the table. “Since you involved my wife in our drama, everything is involved now.”

“There is no drama here. I was just informing her to do something and not come running to me when I eventually got everyone to my side and brought you down to the ground where you belong.”

A deep frown settled on his face when Xavier threw his head back and burst into laughter, the roar of his laughter reverberating through the air, tearing through everyone’s ears. When his laughter died down, he returned his attention to Margaret and passed her a cocky smirk.

“I didn’t expect you to be this clueless, dear sister. You can get everyone to your side for all I care, Margaret. Accept the fact that you’re not capable enough and can barely match up to me.”
