Emily’s Call

“Beth, Beth, don’t pull me to the waters,” Elaine cried loudly as Beth’s hold on her hand tightened as she led them into the ocean, their legs immediately becoming soaked. “There is a wave coming,” she yelled.

“Then you have to runnnnnn.”

Immediately, both girls swiveled around and raced out of the water. “Were you planning to kill me, Beth? Oh my, my chest.”

“That was so fun.”

They both slumped on the ground, breathing heavily as they stared at the sky above their heads, not bothering about the sand that they both lay on. “God, our body is going to be so dirty after this.”

“Isn’t that what we’re here for? To have fun that’s mind-blowing, that’ll leave us hella exhausted afterward.”

“This scenario is so pretty.”

“I know, right.”

“And the sky looks like it could take all my troubles away. I think it might.”

Beth cocked her head to the side to stare at her friend, her hand farting to the side to hold on Elaine’s palm. “Is that still troubling you?”

Elaine nodded. “Even more than I thought it would. I’m scared, I don’t even know why. I have this feeling that things aren’t as they should be back at home.”

“Don’t worry too much, girl. Everything is going to fall back in place and you know it. All you have to do for now is to enjoy your time in this place:” she rose from the sand and stretched her hand forward for Elaine to take. When she did, she helped her up on her feet. “Let’s play.”

“What kind of play?” Elaine grumbled. “Come on, there are a lot. We can see the ocean closer.”

They both began making their way to the waters again, excited at the light blue color of it that shimmered even in the afternoon. Beth was the first person to rush to the water. She stepped forward until her legs were fully submerged in the water and she urged Elaine to do the same.

“Fucking stop being a baby and come forward.”

She shook her head and followed after Beth into the water. She growled when Beth slapped scooped water from the ocean and threw it to her face, her laughter buried by the sound of the waves. Elaine did same. She scooped water into her hands and splashed it on Beth’s face, following the same routine and laughing afterward.

“You sly fox.”

“Sly? If I’m sly, I don’t know what to call you. You started this.”

“I’ll end it.” She again gathered water in her hands and threw it at Elaine. And so, their water fight in the ocean began, their laughter getting buried by the sound of the ocean. It was only after Elaine got tired that she stopped the water fight and began to step out of the ocean when she predicted a large wave coming in. She swiped a hand over her face to remove every trace of water and began to make her way back to the sand where she slumped and grabbed the bottle of water that they’d brought with them.

She only pulled away from the bottle of water when the sound of her phone ringing from her bag reverberated around them. She pulled the phone from her bag, a frown settling on her face at the sight of the caller ID.

“Who is it?” Beth asked.

“Rigel. I wonder why he’s calling now.”

Beth snatched the phone from her and answered the call, putting it on a loudspeaker.

“We can hear,” she said into the phone. “Say what you have to say.”

“Get ready immediately. I’ll come pick you both up. It’s urgent.”

He didn’t say another word and the line went off with a beeping sound, leaving the two women in awe as they stared at each other. “What did he mean?” Elaine asked. Although she knew exactly what the man meant, she just needed to confirm her doubts.

“He meant that we should cover up and that he’s coming to pick us up. Is he crazy? We didn’t agree for an hour only.”

“I guess we should dress first if we don’t want him coming in and seeing our assets.”

They threw their coats on them and waited for him to show up. In no time, they saw him making his way toward them. His steps were hurried and angry like they’d done something wrong that required hours of scolding.

“What is wrong?” Elaine decided to ask once he got to them.

He curtly bowed to her and replied. “We have to leave immediately. It’s no longer safe here.”

“What do you mean?”

“The car is ready. It’s the boss’s order:”

Elaine clamped her mouth shut at the anger that almost enveloped her every being at the man’s words. Why can’t she be told anything at all? Didn’t she deserve to at least know what exactly was going on? “Why?”

“Please make the job easier, Mrs Romano. We have to leave immediately.”

Realizing that her mood had already been ruined by the man, she grabbed her bag that lay on the floor and began storming out of the beach to the place where their car had been parked, Beth behind her.”

Once she got to the car, she threw her bag in and got in, closing her eyes while she laid her head on the headrest of the car. It was becoming so unbearable that she knew nothing about the situation even though she was Xavier’s wife. He kept hiding important things from her and there was only a bit more that she would take.

As they got back to the penthouse, Elaine and Beth strode into the space and dropped their bags on the couches. Elaine didn’t wait another second before storming to her room and closing the door behind her. Bringing her phone to her face, she dialed Xavier’s number and put the phone on speaker, waiting for him to pick up.
Receiving no response from him, she called him for a second time only to receive the same result.

Was he perhaps ignoring her on purpose? She couldn’t help but parade the space while ransacking her brain for the answer to her question.

The blaring sound of her phone caused her heart to skip a beat. She brought the phone forward but her face dropped when she saw who it was. She’d been expecting it to be her husband but it was only just Emily. But why was Emily calling her all of a sudden? She hardly ever called.

She swiped on the green button and placed the phone close to her ear.

“Emily? How are you.”

“El…Elaine, there is a problem. I’m sorry for disrupting your vacation but this is so urgent,” Emily’s voice rang out from the other side. Her voice was laced with panic and urgency, her breath loud.

“Calm down, Ems. What’s going on? Is it about Ria again?”

“No….it’s not Ria this time. It’s someone even worse.”

She frowned. “I don’t understand.”

“He’s back.”

“Who?”

“Albeit Rock, our father. He’s back in the city.”

Elaine felt her entire body go numb and cold at her sister’s words. She tried to register all that the girl said in her head and her hold on the phone tightened, Emily’s words echoing in her head over and over again. Albeit Rock. Her doom was back!

She let out a gasp, the memory of a few months ago resurfacing in her head. How the man had shown up in their lives again after so many years and ended up deceiving her into believing that Xavier was the evil one instead. He’d made her trust him and help him escape from Xavier's home and in the end, he did the thing that broke her the most. He killed her baby.

After that time, she knew that Xavier had been doing everything in his power to find the man but he was sly as fuck. The man had hidden every trace of himself and they were sure he got some new backups.

“But how?”

“I don’t know. I heard from someone a while ago. I’m so worried about you and I don’t know what to do about him. Please stay safe. I mean, we all have to stay safe but you should stay extra safe.”

“I…I will. I’ll give you a call later.” The call ended and her legs lost their balance. She kept stepping backward until the back of her knees hit the bed and she sat on it, her eyes glossy with tears.
