That Block Of Ice

Just a few days ago, Elaine’s world had collapsed around her like a twig. The company she’d spent years building had pummeled in the blink of an eye, plus Jimmy’s betrayal, creating an added insult to her injury. She’d been left shattered and broken but who would have thought that a single marriage proposal would set things right again?

And what a marriage proposal it was, one from her ex’s uncle himself. She would have rolled her eyes and offered a ticket to hell if someone had foreseen the situation two weeks ago.

“Miss Rock is so pretty.”

“This fits you perfectly, Miss Rock.”

The two girls before Elaine smiled in admiration as they stared at her fully dressed in a body hug wedding dress that flowed all the way to the floor covering her foot.

“Am I?”

“You make a perfect bride,” the first praised.

Elaine's lips curled up, staring at herself in the mirror. On her way to the mall, she didn’t think she would enjoy wedding dress fitting as much. After breakfast, Xavier led her out of the house only to bring her to the mall for a wedding dress fitting. According to him, their wedding would be taking place sooner than she expected.

Her eyes scanned the large space for him, searching to see if he left the comfortable space of his Rolls Royce. Just how rich was he? This morning, her mouth had fallen open at the sight of his garage. What expensive cars weren’t there?

She lost count after the tenth car. Xavier truly was the emperor of the underworld.

“This is great but I’d love to see other dresses also.”

“Of course.”

They helped her out of the dress and back to the sundress she wore before leading her to the other side of the mall where a great deal of wedding dresses were arranged. She could see the judging eyes of the employees as they did their jobs, scared that she might as well bully them.

She ran her hands through the dresses on the row, admiring their designs and tailoring. Just then, her eyes fell on the lone dress on the side and she quickly walked to it. Just as she touched it, she felt someone else’s hand on them.

She turned to the side.

“Elaine?”

“Ria.”

They exclaimed in unison.

Before Ria could drag the dress, Elaine beat her to it, snatching the dress and hugging it to her chest. Ria’s eyes widened.

“I saw that dress first.”

“My hands got to it first.”

Ria gritted her teeth, her eyes on the dress. “As if bullying me isn’t enough, you followed me to the store I chose to purchase my dress from.”

“Followed you?” Elaine laughed. “I do not have so much luxury time, Ria. Well, I don’t expect you to know, after all, you’ve never really worked your whole life.”

“Oh please, don’t do this to yourself. We both know everyone thinks I’m better than you in design. It’s confirmed now. Tell me why the boss of the fashion world can’t make her so-called wedding dress herself, huh?”

“Applies to you too. Last time I checked, you paid a fashion designer to make your first practical dress and lied to everyone. Want me to tell the world?”

Ria stepped forward, her forefingers pointed at Elaine. “Don’t you dare.”

“What? Scared? Or maybe I should tell the world how you’re the big bully and not me.” Anger overtook Elaine. All her life, she’d wished to have her wedding dress made by herself but her dreams were shattered after the stunt Ria pulled. She was having her wedding much faster than expected.

“No one is going to believe you. If you don’t want me to create a scene, better hand over the dress and leave to your hellhole.” Twirling her jet-black hair with her fingers, she circled Elaine, her heels clicking at each calculated step. She continued. “You know, I wonder what Mr. Romano sees in you. Dear sister, don’t get your hopes high yet, you’re nothing and I’m sure he’s only playing with your head on the day of the wedding.” She snapped her fingers severally, the sound filling Elaine’s ears, pushing her to the brim.

“On the day of the wedding, he might just desert you, like everyone else. A super wealthy man like him, wouldn’t want something to do with you. Hand over the dress, It’s the best I’ve seen since I walked in here.”

“Same with me. I want it.”

“I fucking saw it first, Elaine Rock.”

Ria lunged at her, her hands extending to her chest, trying to pry the perfect dress out of her hands. With just a pull of Ria’s hair, Elaine had her off her body, Ria’s grunt filling the environment.

“Since everyone calls me a big bully, I might as well live up to the image.”

“You bitch, get your hands off me.”

“I should make you bald right now.” she pulled on Ria’s hair tighter.

Suddenly before she could fully register what was happening, her hands were wrenched away from Ria’s scalp sending her stumbling to the floor. Her forearm scraped against the hard surface, leaving trails of blood.

“The fuck,” she heard Jimmy groan, his hands soothing Ria’s scalp. He glared at her. “You fucking lowlife. If my girl wants that dress, she’s going to get it.”

“In your dreams I guess.”

“You slut.” He squatted to her size on the floor, grabbing her chin and forcing her eyes to stare at him. “How the fuck you convinced that block of ice to give you face, huh?”

“That doesn’t concern you.”

“You will not get married to him, Elaine, you know why? You love me so much and can’t leave without me.

Elaine chuckled.
Love? That was a complete misstatement. Love was a huge word in her dictionary. “Let go.”

“You will…”

“I said let the fuck go.”

“And if I don’t?” He took a deep breath, gritting his teeth in anger. “Honestly, when I saw you just now holding the dress, I hated you. You keep oppressing your sister.”

“I’m going to do what I feel like doing.”

“You think he loves you? He didn’t even care when I told him about the last time we fucked, how you moaned my name and asked me not to stop.”

“What do I do? Cry?” Elaine rolled her eyes, glaring at him like he was some piece of shit that he was.

Her heart flew to her mouth as he suddenly brought out a knife from his pocket, and placing it on her abdomen. “The dress, hand it over or I pierce you.”

Ria gasped in panic. She immediately rushed to Jimmy’s side. “Jim, the employees are watching, stop. You'll get us in trouble."
But he was too blinded by anger to hear her words.
His eyes were fixated solely on Elaine.

“Hand the fucking dress over.”

“You’re going to regret this, Jimmy.”

The air around them suddenly grew ten times tight. Ria stifled as a tall striking figure walked close to them. Before Jimmy could register what was going on, his breath hitched as he felt a cold metal pressed to his forehead.

“Get the fuck up.”
