Chapter 10 The Key to the Enclave

The piercing scream almost made William curse out loud.

The volume of the sound was so high that even Sienna in the basement of the mansion might have heard it.

On a night when zombies roamed, making such a sound was akin to seeking death.

Although William was there to kill zombies, it didn't mean he could do so recklessly. Setting aside the fact that the stamina of a One-Star Evolver was not high, the fact that he was not yet immune to the virus was enough to make William extremely cautious.

A reborn individual who died less than a day after being reborn was a disgrace in the history of rebirth.

So William didn't even bother to figure out who made this highly technical scream. He rolled on the spot, landed on the lawn on one side, then leaped over a half-height hedge and landed on the other side of the corridor.

"Save me!"

An urgent female voice came from behind, likely the one who screamed.

After ten years of the apocalypse, William's heart had hardened like iron. Upon hearing a cry for help, his heart remained unmoved. He glanced around and saw zombies coming toward them due to the scream. William made his way in a direction with fewer zombies and was stealthily there.

However, what William didn't expect was that the owner of the voice kept chasing him, shouting phrases like. "Wait for me. Save me. Don't run!" continuously from behind.

If this were an open space, William could easily outrun the person behind him with his speed. However, this was a residential area, not very spacious, and the person behind him was not avoiding obstacles. She would take the most direct route, so although the distance between them increased, she was not left far behind.

As a result, the commotion caused by the person behind attracted more and more zombies heading toward the two of them. Roughly counting, there were about sixty to seventy of them!

With so many zombies, even standing still and fighting them would take a while, not to mention that he couldn't let them scratch even a bit of skin. William was not confident.

“Fuck!” William knew that if this situation continued, he might die here. After cursing angrily, he quickly made a decision.

He turned back swiftly and ran toward the voice. What William saw was a disheveled woman in fashionable clothes, now torn and tattered, barely covering her body.

William said, "If you want to live, shut up!"

William was not going to be polite to someone who almost put himself in danger. He rushed to her and delivered a slap, silencing her instantly, then he pulled her in another direction and ran.

Fortunately, the zombies were still at a basic level, not very fast. Being a One-Star Evolver, William could almost carry the woman and run far. After a while, they managed to shake off the pursuing zombies and entered a building.

William closed the security door and looked outside. The horde of zombies didn't follow them inside, but there were still about twenty of them loitering nearby. They couldn't leave in the short term.

"Thank you."

Undeniably, the woman had a pleasant voice. They were temporarily safe, and William took a moment to look at her. He noticed that she was surprisingly beautiful, with delicate skin. However, fear and panic still lingered in her eyes, along with a slightly swollen cheek and a trace of blood at the corner of her mouth.

Although William didn't hit her hard, being slapped by a One-Star Evolver was still painful.

"I just don't want to be killed by you."

William coldly replied to the woman and then began to vigilantly move toward the corridor with a knife in hand.

The woman was just an ordinary person. Seeing William walking back, she quickly followed. The feeling of having someone behind her whom she couldn't trust made William very uncomfortable. He turned around and warned. "You can follow me, but don't make a sound, or I'll kill you."

The woman was startled by William's fierce look and nodded quickly.

Seeing people turn into zombies, witnessing blood and corpses, seeing severed limbs and body parts, which turned this extremely beautiful woman, who should have been a goddess in the eyes of many of the opposite sex, into an obedient and compliant individual.

Even though she had just been slapped.

William slowly approached the door of the stairwell. Through the glass on the door, he saw only a pair of bare feet moving irregularly inside, with a large pool of blood on the ground, already dark and congealed.

He gently pushed the door. Probably due to the high-end nature of the Oasis Luxury community, the door was well-maintained and made no sound as William squeezed through. His field of vision suddenly widened.

Without hesitation, William leaped forward and swiftly chopped off the zombie's head. This action made the woman following him gasp, but when she faced William's stern gaze, she desperately covered her mouth, stifling the sound.

William snorted and ignored the woman behind him, focusing on digging out the crystal from the zombie's forehead. He then examined the body that had been eaten, noticing a large hole in the back of the head, already emptied. It was why it hadn't turned into a zombie.

It made William furrow his brow.

Typically, at this stage, zombies had not evolved intelligence. Their desire for flesh and blood was just an instinctual craving.

But this body had no brain. William thought, ‘Who did this? A zombie? Or a mutated creature?’

Regardless of the conclusion, it probably meant that a slightly higher level of mutated life had appeared here.

William, who had thought his development after rebirth would be smooth, suddenly became cautious now.

Standing up, William noticed a fire extinguisher box on one side of the wall. He opened it and took out a fire axe to carry on his back. Although his outdoor machete was of good quality, after many battles and some corrosion from insects, it was slightly damaged. He needed to find a backup weapon.

William glanced upstairs, hearing the low growls of zombies but not seeing their figures. He decided to kill the zombies in this unit first before making further plans.

At that moment, the window at the back of the ground floor suddenly lit up. William instinctively looked over and caught a glimpse of a light streaking across the sky, then falling in the distance.

William's heart couldn't help but skip a beat at seeing the milky white light.

He recognized that light.

It was the key to the enclave!
