Chapter 70 The Leak
The appearance of Chain Prisoner brought the entire battlefield to a halt. Whether human or monster, they looked at the towering figure, feeling a tremor deep in their souls.
Even the zombies, which usually had no thoughts and moved like walking corpses, raised their heads and gazed at the figure in the sky with their cloudy eyes. William reluctantly gave up his unrealistic idea.
Chain Prisoner was indeed a treasure trove. Even obtaining one item from it would be beneficial for a long time.
However, high rewards often come with high risks. It was clearly unwise to confront a fourth-level monster, which might actually be a ninth-level monster in disguise, with the strength of a one-star evolver.
William could use his professional advantage and knowledge of the apocalypse to kill second-level monsters, but dealing with a fourth-level monster... was out of the question.
William's gaze fell on the Purple Cloud War Ants not far from him.
Having seen this Chain Prisoner in his previous life, William was the first to snap out of the monster's oppressive aura. This gave him an excellent opportunity. With a cold glint in his eyes, William launched an attack, leaping lightly twice into the midst of the Purple Cloud War Ants. Edge of the Moon sliced through the twilight air and the bodies of the war ants.
Known for their defense, even the Blade Ants couldn't withstand Edge of the Moon in the slightest. The Purple Cloud War Ants responsible for guarding were instantly killed.
Without the protection of the Blade Ants, the weakened Magic Ants and Needle Ants were like lambs to the slaughter in front of William... even though he could only use one arm.
He dug out the magic crystals and cut off the sharpest tips of the Blade Ants' legs. William quickly rushed towards the shop where the horn had sounded. The Monster Baby was there.
By this time, the Chain Prisoner had already started moving forward, covering hundreds of feet with each step, crossing Moon Lake and the street, crushing several pavilions.
William felt a shadow pass overhead, and the ground began to shake violently. The Chain Prisoner stepped over him, its presence like a mountain flying by.
However, William knew he was temporarily safe.
The Monster Baby had summoned these monsters to protect itself. Although it had no control over high-level monsters, these monsters would definitely not harm it.
So, William, who had reached the shop, wasn't afraid of being crushed by Chain Prisoner.
Inside the shop, it was a scene of chaos, filled with a heavy smell of blood. Five or six bodies lay scattered, indicating a fierce battle had taken place.
William noticed something unusual. His connection with the two women had been cut off. Lucy's end had static, and Natalie had turned off her walkie-talkie. A bad feeling surged in his heart. Forcing himself to suppress his worry, William knew his goal today was Monster Baby.
Capturing it and obtaining the bag it carried would make everything worthwhile.
The candy store was divided into two parts. The front was for selling, while the back was for resting. The bodies were all in the front hall.
Judging by the direction in which the bodies had fallen and the angle of the blood splatter, William deduced the fight had started at the entrance and continued to the back room.
A battle might be imminent. He moved his right arm, which had recovered somewhat due to his evolver's physique, but it still wasn't fully functional. For now, his right arm remained unusable.
William quietly approached the back room. Before he reached the door, he suddenly heard a loud noise inside as if something had been broken, followed by a series of strange sounds.
Hearing this, William's heart raced. It was the Monster Baby's unique cry. It was close!
He rushed into the back room and saw a few people hesitating. They turned around upon hearing footsteps, seeing a stranger, immediately became alert.
William's pupils contracted in surprise. These people were holding guns! Although they were just ordinary handguns, they posed a significant threat in this confined space.
Someone anxiously questioned, "Who are you? Leave immediately if you're not involved."
These people pointed their guns at him, looking fierce.
If this had happened a bit later, they would have shot immediately. But the apocalypse had just begun, and they weren't yet accustomed to killing.
William had no time to waste. After the Monster Baby had already escaped from the back, he couldn't afford to delay.
He quickly knocked them out and took their guns.
It was military guns! The moment he held the gun, William knew it was from the military. The captain had put in a lot of effort for this operation.
There was a large hole in the restroom at the back of the room. William crawled through it to the back alley of the shops. The Chain Prisoner was not far ahead, swinging a bloodwood, knocking away zombies and mutated creatures.
William's gaze fell on the end of the alley. He saw the Monster Baby, carrying a golden bag, riding on a Purple Cloud War Ant, running wildly. Not far behind it were four people with rifles aiming at it.
Gunshots rang out, and a bloom of blood appeared on Monster Baby's shoulder. It had been hit! But using this gap, it and the Purple Cloud War Ant turned a corner and disappeared into the alley.
"Mr. Wright, call for backup. I found a small creature with a golden bag. It just threw a potion at us from the bag. It was an evolution potion! That thing must be our main target today! The bag is full of good stuff!" Scott shouted into the walkie-talkie.
After the earlier battle, he knew he couldn't handle the giant ant alone. He had given up on monopolizing the treasures and finally informed Owen.
Hearing this, William knew the secret of Monster Baby wouldn't last long. Soon, everyone involved in today's battle would know. He had to get the bag before anyone else.
Without hesitation, William started running where Monster Baby had disappeared. Scott and the others realized the person following them wasn't an ally and raised their guns to shoot. These four were much more decisive than the people in the room earlier.
But they were up against William. With a slight movement, he made them lose their aim, missing the chance to shoot.
William charged into the group like a tiger, using his shield to block one person's gun, then lowered his right shoulder to knock another away.
Moving the shield aside, he slashed at another person with Edge of the Moon. The person instinctively blocked with his gun, but the sharp blade cut it in half.
Although the person lost his weapon, the action saved his life. He backed away, sweating, and pressed against the alley wall, clearing the path.
Scott, who had been at the front, was now at the back. He saw a blur, and the person was suddenly beside him.
Being an evolver, Scott knew it was too late to shoot. He charged forward, trying to tackle the person.
With his One-Star evolver physique, he didn't believe the person could be stronger. But William sidestepped as if he knew Scott would charge.
Swinging his shield, he hit Scott's side, using the force to push off the wall and leap far ahead.
"Thanks!" William said, mockingly.
Leaving this world behind, William continued chasing Monster Baby. The four people couldn't stop him at all!
Explosions sounded behind him. Enduring the pain in his ribs, Scott turned to see the soldier Thomas, who had given him a strong sense of oppression, appearing on a rooftop with seven or eight others. They were attacking the 160-foot-tall giant monster with rocket launchers!
"Why are they attacking it?" he wondered aloud.
Scott was sweating profusely, grabbing the walkie-talkie and shouting, "Mr. Wright, don't attack it! The treasure is here! If you don't come, it'll be taken!"
