Chapter 40 No One is Noble
"You're insane!"
Candice followed alongside William, looking anxious.
This man chose to go to the supermarket at a time like this!
Candice wasn't foolish; she quickly guessed William's purpose. He was going for the roulette in the supermarket. Although she didn't know what it was exactly, she speculated it had something to do with magical powers.
But even with something magical, one needed luck to obtain it! What's the situation now? Zombies were everywhere. Although many were lured away by the survivors from the armed forces, there were still scattered ones along the way, especially a significant number near the supermarket.
He wanted to enter the supermarket, undoubtedly facing hundreds of zombies now. What was happening to this usually calm man?
"People are always willing to take risks for great wealth, even in the face of death threats," William replied nonchalantly, though his pace didn't slow down.
"Is your intention to have these children attract the zombies to create an opportunity for you to enter the supermarket?" Lucy gritted her teeth, full of resentment.
"Are you still following me? I thought you would continue being the good person," William sneered, clearly displeased with the beautiful teacher.
"Keep quiet!" Natalie was already very displeased with Lucy. Because of Lucy, they had been in danger twice, and the current situation made it clear that William was the strongest. Instead of seizing the opportunity, she kept picking on him. How did you even graduate from college with such low emotional intelligence?
William took down two zombies, cleanly digging out magic crystals, hiding behind a tree, and waiting for the dozens of zombies ahead to move away.
"William isn't that kind of person," Candice tugged at Lucy's sleeve, trying to explain kindly to avoid tension.
"No, I am," William suddenly turned around, looking at the three women. "Don't consider me a good person. When there's enough benefit in front of me, I won't hesitate to abandon you."
He looked at stunned women and said firmly, "Do you think I'm bad? Let me tell you, reality is cruel. The law of the jungle, survival of the fittest, is more direct now! If you can't adapt, then go die!"
"Don't measure everything by your previous moral standards. Besides making you die faster, it serves no purpose. You need to rethink things in a different way."
Pointing at Lucy with disdain, William continued, "For example, you. When you question me, it's all from your perspective, from your accustomed values. But is that right? What obligation do I have to help you and your students? They are neither my subordinates nor my friends, and you are not my woman. Why should I help you? Exploit? What's worth me using from those cowards who, despite their numerical advantage and weapons, are being suppressed by three or four people and dare not resist? Maybe their escape gave me an opportunity to achieve my goal, but couldn't I have done it without them? Just a different method."
"Mrs. Foster, don't think too highly of yourself. The apocalypse has just begun. Wait a few days, when survival is at stake, perhaps you, who now feel like a righteous goddess, will reveal your true self for a moldy piece of bread!"
"Don't pretend to be noble; it makes me nauseous!"
William's words struck hard at the hearts of the three women. Many years later, when Natalie recalled when she truly began to adapt to the apocalypse, she would remember this man's words. And Candice later had to admit that this man taught her how to survive in the apocalypse.
With a cold glance at Lucy, William turned and continued toward the supermarket. Two seconds later, Natalie followed, followed shortly after by Candice with a solemn expression. Ten seconds later, Lucy, with a pale face and numb eyes, staggered along.
In the face of survival, no one is noble.
Regardless of whether William did it intentionally, one thing Lucy said was right: most of the zombies surrounding the supermarket were indeed lured away.
William led a few people around to the back of the supermarket, finding a place they could enter.
It was a small window on the side of the second-floor restroom, just enough for one person to crawl through. William asked the three women and the Pill to wait here, then took a run-up, climbed a few feet, and went in.
The supermarket wasn't dark; some emergency lights were on, which greatly helped William. He quietly left the restroom and went outside.
This seemed to be the staff changing area; outside the restroom were three rows of lockers, many of which were open, with scattered items and blood splatters on some, but no bodies.
William approached the door of the break area, peeking outside. Several zombies were wandering in the sales area, with many shelves overturned.
After dealing with these zombies and collecting the magic crystals, William descended to the first floor from the defunct escalator. According to the student's description, the roulette should be here.
The supermarket entrance was blocked by several cash registers, making loud banging noises, unlike the quiet second floor.
With the emergency lights, William saw many bodies and limbs on the ground, with about half being zombies. It seemed there had been a fierce battle here, but it was unknown if there were any survivors.
Low growls of zombies came from behind two shelves. William went over and dealt with them one by one. He walked further and finally saw the roulette.
Similar to the one at Sienna's house, this was a First-Level Roulette standing against the wall, surrounded by many bodies. On the roulette operating table, there were several magic crystals scattered around. It seemed that the survivors here had known how to use the roulette, but luck wasn't on their side as they were attacked by zombies before they could spin it, dying here.
These were William's quick judgments as he was more interested in what was on the roulette.
Ten pieces?
William squinted. This First-Level Roulette required ten magic crystals to spin!
A standard level one roulette usually required five magic crystals for one spin. Sienna's house needed seven due to a lucky function card, which was already a very good reward for a First-Level Roulette. But this roulette required ten magic crystals! What kind of amazing rewards were there in this roulette for needing so many magic crystals?
William quickly scanned through the rewards. There was a One-Star Evolution Potion, a round iron shield, and other small items like cigarettes, red wine, batteries, power banks, bananas, ropes...
Lastly, there were two items: an emerald green necklace and a bottle of pale pink liquid!
