Chapter 78 Scattered Treasures in the Sky
Soul Devour is a skill, but it can only be used once.
In his previous life, William had never seen this skill. He had only heard that there was a special black card on some roulette wheels. Unlike other cards, it did not record the usage method but only had a skull pattern.
After using this card, it granted only one ability. A person could devour a life form of the same evolutionary level within a certain time limit to gain the effect of advancing one evolutionary level.
In other words, if a One-Star Evolver used the black card to devour a first-level mutant creature, they would become a Two-Star Evolver. A Two-Star Evolver who devoured a Second-level mutant creature would become a Three-Star Evolver.
However, it was said that this soul-devouring card had very severe side effects. The most confirmed one was that this one-time skill greatly reduced a person's lifespan, leaving them with less than ten years to live after its use. Additionally, at certain times, they would suffer inhuman pain.
There were also some rumors about this card, such as losing fertility, becoming cold and ruthless, and having fluctuating strength, making it hard to distinguish truth from fiction.
One thing was certain. Using this card came at a great cost, often outweighing the benefits.
Of course, this card also had usage restrictions. Three-Star Evolvers and above who used this card would have their souls devoured on the spot, dying instantly. This card could only be used by evolvers with a maximum of Two-Star Evolvers.
Those who use this card will have a black skull tattoo appear on the part of their body, indicating that they have used the card and accepted the side effects of the Soul Devour.
No wonder a human could become a Two-Star Evolver within just over thirty hours; it turns out they used a soul-devouring card!
This revelation restored William's confidence, which had been slightly shaken.
"Put down the bag, and I'll let you go," he demanded William to do.
Thomas's upper body wound had stopped bleeding, but the wound area was still covered in blood, looking quite terrifying. If an ordinary person suffered such an injury, they would have had difficulty moving. While for a Two-Star Evolver, it was nothing.
William glanced at the Chain Prisoner, who was still struggling to get over the remaining half of the building.
He smiled at Thomas and said, "You are indeed an unexpected factor, forcing me to abandon my plan, but that doesn't mean I have to give up everything."
Thomas frowned. He had already seen Owen approaching quickly and hoped to delay some time. So, Thomas did not immediately attack, and he also had some apprehension about William, fearing he might have some powerful trick up his sleeve.
For some reason, Thomas felt that William's trap was already set, just waiting for him and others to fall into it.
As a large stone flew from one side, Thomas shattered it with a wave of his hand, scattering debris everywhere.
"Whatever comes in the face of absolute power, all schemes are as fragile as paper," William said.
This inexplicably gave Thomas confidence. He believed he was now the highest-level human evolver, and no one could stop him.
William shook his head and pointed in a direction with his chin. Thomas turned slightly and saw more than twenty people running towards them, followed by a large group of zombies, with the Corpse Ape among them.
"Mr. Thompson?" William called.
Thomas recognized the leader but didn't know why they were there.
"And over there," William said as he pointed to another side.
Thomas looked over and saw the trio he had fought in the square earlier were also arriving. Although they were injured, for beast-like evolvers, their injuries made them even more dangerous.
"It seems like everyone who has survived until now is here." William smiled again, then his tone suddenly became serious, pointing at Thomas. "You know, I just heard your subordinate call your name. You're Thomas. Once, I admired you. But now, I really, really hate you."
Thomas was stunned. He had some fame in the military but not to the extent that outsiders would know.
"Soldiers deserve respect. Even in the apocalypse, they uphold their honor. But that doesn't include you or your superior, Owen. Your hearts changed when the apocalypse came. Everything you do today is for your selfish desires," William said.
"You're talking nonsense!" Thomas roared, not allowing this kid to insult him and his commander.
"Am I wrong?" William sneered, "When the disaster started, as the only government force in this city, what did you do? Did you organize rescues? Help refugees? Clear out zombies?"
"No, you did nothing. Although you were killing zombies, it was to obtain magic crystals, not to save people. You didn't help ordinary citizens but used the evolvers among them to serve you. Those who guarded the four corners for you were cannon fodder you had already chosen!" William added.
"You and Mr. Wright are doing this today to strengthen yourselves!" William shouted, pointing at the blood-soaked ordinary soldiers rushing over. "They are the real soldiers, unconditionally obeying orders, giving up their worries for their families, and fighting bravely. But you and those with epaulets, your souls are already tainted!"
"Do you want to seize treasures? Fine, come on. Today, let's see how many treasures a Two-Star Evolver like you can grab!" William said.
With that, William suddenly ran towards the Chain Prisoner behind him, taking large strides onto the remaining half of the collapsed building.
This action prompted the various forces that had been observing the situation and gradually forming an encirclement to take action immediately.
Owen, Caleb, Thomas, and even the trio all chased after William and launched their attacks.
"Come on!"William shouted.
Before reaching the highest point of the ruins, he suddenly tore open the golden backpack. Seven or eight items scattered into the air, each shining with a tempting glow.
Everyone who saw this scene instinctively swallowed. What had they been fighting so hard for today? Wasn't it for these treasures? Now that these items were right in front of them, they couldn't resist!
Owen, who had been calmly commanding with his hands behind his back since the battle began, suddenly rushed out of the team. The strength he displayed at this moment was quite surprising—clearly, he was not an ordinary one-star evolver.
Thomas also moved. He had been closest to William just now and was the fastest. Thomas was only a short distance away from those treasures, flying in mid-air.
The injured trio also moved, forgetting their pain, their eyes fixed on the glowing treasures.
Caleb's side also moved. They couldn't just watch these treasures as they were being taken by others!
Besides them, some people suddenly emerged from the shadows on one side of the ruins, reaching the scene before anyone else!
Seeing this, the others' faces changed dramatically!
