Chapter 91 Mutated High Footed Spider
Lakeside Community was near the budget hotel where the trio was staying. They could walk there in a few minutes, and they could see the window of room 1107 from their resting room.
The room was very dim, with only the colorful roulette providing some illumination. All other places that could be seen from the outside were covered with thick cloth.William took a deep breath to calm his slightly excited heart.
In front of him was a five-color roulette, but two areas had already turned gray. The Career Scroll on them had been taken away.
At this moment, William couldn't help but think of the legend he had heard in his previous life about this trio. They were once in the limelight and then disappeared, probably because of this five-color roulette.
It couldn't be denied that they were very lucky. Not only did they encounter an ordinary roulette with the Light Blade skill, but they also found a colorful roulette specifically designed for careers.
"This thing is a bit special," Jack exclaimed, full of curiosity and excitement about the five-color roulette.
Seeing the big secret he discovered being taken over by others, Ulysses, Peter, and the now-awake Owen were furious. Ulysses's eyes occasionally flashed with venomous resentment.
In his view, William was a robber who had taken what belonged to him.
People were like this, always accustomed to considering issues from their perspective, especially when it came to their interests. They instinctively believed that all objects of interest related to them were their own.
Indeed, the roulette was discovered by Ulysses, while William did take it, but were they any nobler? Didn't they also try to kill William at The shore of Moon Lake to seize the treasure? The only difference was that they were in an advantageous position then, while now they were at a disadvantage.
In the apocalypse, there was no right or wrong, only the strong and the weak.
"We need to stay here for a while," William's gaze at the roulette was somewhat dreamy as he spoke.
Touching the smooth blade of the Edge of the Moon, Jack kept exclaiming in admiration, unable to put down the battle knife.
William finally couldn't stand it and turned to him, saying, "Can you be quiet? We're in an ambush, okay? What's so special about a broken knife?"
Discovering the colorful roulette was just the first step. Spinning the five-color roulette required a lot of magic crystals. Since William didn't intend to give up the two Career Scrolls, he naturally had to go out and hunt zombies.
"Is it a broken knife?" Jack's voice suddenly rose, "Do you call this a broken knife? You have no taste. This is a peerless treasure! Have you seen it chop zombies? It cuts through them like slicing vegetables, leaving corpses everywhere in minutes."
"Shut up!" William scolded, he couldn't understand how such a healthy young man could tend to be a chatterbox.
"Mr. Wright, the knives in your hand and mine look similar. That can't be a coincidence, right?" Jack asked slyly, not shutting up but instead moving closer.
William nodded in agreement. He replied, "I have a craftsman career. I make both of these knives."
Careers weren't top secrets. Survivors would find out sooner or later. Since Jack had joined Candice's team, there was no need to hide it from him.
"That's amazing," Jack complimented as he scratched his head, clearly wanting a profession himself.
"There are conditions. You'll understand when you have a profession," William said.
"When can I have a profession?" Jack glanced at William and asked unintentionally.
William smiled. Then he began to explain, "You don't have to be so subtle. I will tell you directly. There are still two professions available on that roulette. I will allocate them based on the type of career. The principle of allocation is..."
William stared at Jack and said slowly, "Whoever is more willing to stand firmly on my side."
Jack lowered his head and didn't speak. William thought this was normal. If Jack had started pledging loyalty to him to get a profession, then he wouldn't have been allowed to stay with the group.
"Listen to Mrs. Wright," Jack was loyal to his captain. Faced with the temptation of a profession, he didn't show any abnormality. He knew that Candice didn't have a profession yet so it wouldn't be his turn.
"Don't be discouraged. Career Scrolls are hard to come by, but for me, it's not that difficult," William said.
"As long as I listen to you?" Jack asked.
"As long as you listen to me," William replied.
Jack scratched his head and pouted. He helplessly complained, "Can you be less obvious when you're trying to bribe me? It's too straightforward."
William withdrew his gaze from Jack and instead focused on a phone set with an alarm on a cardboard box in the middle of the street not far away. In ten seconds, the phone would ring and attract all the zombies around.
"Straightforward is better than unclear," William said.
When the phone rang, the beautiful music seemed out of place in the devastated world.
But the zombies didn't care. They only knew that where there was sound, there might be fresh flesh. Moments later, hundreds of zombies gathered around.
As the cardboard box under the phone exploded, the gathered zombies were instantly blown away, with severed limbs raining down around them. A burnt, bloody smell filled the air.
"Your turn!" William said as he nodded towards the scene.
Jack shouted, "Where do you learn to make bombs? Can they be remotely detonated? You're going to get investigated by the government."
Seeing William roll his eyes, Jack mischievously smiled and jumped out from his hiding spot. As he ran, he finished off the zombies that the explosion hadn't killed, all the while grumbling about hating to do such dirty work.
At that moment, another explosion sounded from a different street. It seemed Natalie had succeeded as well. William roughly estimated that they could collect over two hundred magic crystals by the end of the morning.
William frowned.
After Jack had dealt with the surrounding zombies and dug out the magic crystals, William sent him to help Natalie, but he disappeared into another street with his knife.
The speed of collecting magic crystals still needed to be faster!
Each spin of the five-color roulette required more magic crystals. According to the trio, their last attempt used over two hundred crystals and failed. This time, at least three hundred and fifty would be needed to be safe, and the final spin would require at least five hundred.
At the current collection rate, it would take about two days.
That was too long. Not to mention whether Michelle would be willing to wait that long. William didn't want to waste too much time either. After all, he was no longer ahead of the evolutionary pace due to being unconscious for a few days. He needed to catch up.
So William decided to act alone. He wanted to use the Second-Level Magic Crystals to replace ordinary ones.
His target was a supermarket.
When the apocalypse happened, it was just the beginning of the evening rush hour. Many people hadn't gone home yet and were on their way back from work or in shopping malls and supermarkets, making these places densely packed with zombies.
On the flip side, the zombies here might have hunted more humans, so their evolution level would naturally be higher. The chances of encountering the second-level mutated zombies here were greater.
For others, seeing a Second-Level Zombie would make them run away, but not William. He was one of the best among One-Star Evolvers, wielding the powerful Edge of the Moon. He was also very familiar with almost all types of zombies, so he set his sights on this supermarket.
Hiding at the corner of the street opposite, William observed for a long time. Once he understood the surroundings clearly, he climbed in from the side of the supermarket.
Although it was daytime, visibility inside the supermarket was very low. The few windows were blocked by layers of shelves, making the powerless supermarket as dark as dusk. The air was filled with a musty smell, possibly from rotting food or corpses.
William crouched quietly by the wall, listening carefully. He silently counted numbers in his mind. When William reached a certain number, his body suddenly sprang up, and with one swift motion, William decapitated a zombie that had just turned the corner from behind a shelf. With his other hand, he grabbed the sparse hair on the severed head and held it up.
William gouged out the magic crystal and threw the zombie's head down the aisle. The head rolled on the ground with a dull thud, immediately attracting nearby zombies. More than a dozen zombies emerged from various places, looking to see what was moving.
William didn't kill these ordinary zombies that had their backs to him. Instead, he waited to see if any big ones would appear.
A minute had already passed. Although the zombie's head was kicked around like a soccer ball, nothing unusual happened. William was slightly disappointed. There were no high-level evolved zombies on this floor.
Since that was the case, he couldn't let these ordinary zombies go. With that thought, William silently launched an attack from behind. With the sharpness of the new Edge of the Moon and his experience, he killed the zombies swiftly and quietly. In moments, more than ten zombies had fallen under his blade.
Just as he was about to continue to eliminate the nearby zombies, William suddenly felt a sense of danger. He looked up sharply and saw a pair of blood-red eyes staring at him from the ceiling where a camera was mounted!
Mutated High footed spider!
William was startled, recognizing the black creature the size of a sheep.
In the city, spiders weren't as large or varied as in the wild, but they were numerous. Several common types were found in almost all human buildings.
This High-footed spider was common in the city, but the largest ones were only the size of a duck egg. However, the mutated ones were different, like the one in front of him.
In fact, William didn't want to encounter a mutated High-footed spider because these mutated creatures were very troublesome. Their webs and venom were already a headache, and their innate skills made them even more difficult to deal with.
Moreover, these creatures were notorious for appearing in groups, usually with one or two larger ones leading a bunch of smaller ones, often moving collectively.
He had come here to find and kill second-level zombies, but instead, he encountered this High-footed spider!
In a narrow encounter, only one of them could come out victorious!
