Chapter 138 Two-Star Evolution Elixir
The pointer swept over each reward item, slowing down as it neared the two-star Evolution Elixir.
William could hear his heart pounding in his chest.
The first gunman at the stairs was also drawn to the roulette pointer. Though his gun was aimed at William, his eyes were glued to the pointer.
Simon and Brady burst in almost simultaneously, followed by their loyal Evolving persons. Searchlights and high-powered flashlights lit up the surrounding walls and buildings, all focused on this spot.
Everyone at Hope Base who could see this place had their eyes fixed on the elusive second-level roulette.
The pleasant sound of the reward rang out, and those focused eyes turned fervent in an instant.
William reached into the reward box and grabbed the item inside.
"It's the two-star elixir!"Desmond shouted, his voice high-pitched and piercing with excitement.
"Evolving person" had become the buzzword at Hope Base. In a world overrun by zombies and mutated life forms, these words meant survival—living better.
After seeing the privileges of Evolving persons, all survivors developed an almost obsessive desire to become one. This desire grew crazier as the apocalypse dragged on.
Those who had already become Evolving persons were hooked on the sudden surge of power in their bodies. They had tasted the benefits and craved even more power.
When the two-star Evolution Elixir appeared, their eyes turned red. They had only one thought, 'Grab it!'
"Kill him!"Simon and Brady shouted almost simultaneously, and the surrounding soldiers pulled the trigger.
A metal storm raged on the rooftop.
William was just as excited as everyone else, but he had seen this before. He didn't waste a second. After grabbing the two-star Evolution Elixir, he darted to the back of the second-level roulette.
This brought him to the edge of the rooftop, and gunfire erupted behind him.
The roulette wouldn't be destroyed; nothing could damage it before William's rebirth. Naturally, these bullets couldn't do anything to it now either.
But William knew he was in great danger. The soldiers would soon find an angle to shoot him, and he had to act fast.
So he jumped.
Simon and Brady, holding their guns, looked down past the roulette. It was pitch black below, but with their sharpened eyesight, they saw no one had fallen. They realized the person who had just jumped had somehow entered the building.
"Search, search! Find him!" they frantically ordered.
The two leaders looked grim. Their excitement was overshadowed by fear because they knew if that person had time to inject the two-star Evolution Elixir, their status in the base would be in jeopardy, and even their lives would be at risk.
While others might go crazy trying to get their hands on the two-star Evolution Elixir, failing to get it would just mean losing an opportunity. But for Simon and Brady, it was different; they had to get it or make sure no one else did.
The entire base was alarmed by the gunfire. People poured out of their dwellings, looking towards the noise, anxious and unsure if zombies had breached the base. Minor disturbances began to break out.
Candice, Natalie, Lucy, Jack, David, and the others woke up. They immediately noticed William was missing and quickly connected the gunfire to him. Grabbing their weapons, they rushed downstairs towards the commotion.
After jumping off the rooftop, the Edge of the Moon appeared in William's hand. With a light stab into the wall, he controlled his descent and entered the building through an open window.
He quickly exited the room and sprinted down the hallway. He needed to find a secluded place to modify and consume the two-star Evolution Elixir. Once he became a two-star Evolving person, everything would fall into place.
However, this was still a base, and Simon and Brady had hundreds of soldiers under their command. Even if they couldn't all gather here, there were still two or three hundred soldiers nearby. Almost as soon as William exited the room, he began encountering these soldiers.
Combat was inevitable.
If they were in an open area and the soldiers concentrated their fire at him, William would be dead even if he had a hundred lives. But in the narrow, dimly lit stairwell, as a powerful one-star Evolving person, William had an absolute advantage over them. He showed no mercy; his Edge of the Moon cut through anyone who dared to block his way, splattering blood everywhere.
After fighting his way down several floors, the soldiers were already collapsing. In the chaotic flashlight beams, they realized they were facing a grim reaper, a cold-hearted reaper wielding a white Warblade. Their courage completely crumbled after losing one comrade after another.
At this moment, there was no justice or honor, only merciless slaughter.
If you were strong, you slaughtered others; if you were weak, you were slaughtered.
This was the apocalypse, it was no place for reason, only strength and weakness.
When William rushed out of the building, only three minutes had passed since he jumped off the rooftop.
The searchlights on the walls caught his shadow, and the machine guns, finally unrestrained, began firing wildly at him.
The once valiant William now appeared somewhat disheveled.
Fortunately, it was nighttime, and the searchlights couldn't keep up with his movements. As a result, the machine gunners were often shooting blindly. Under these circumstances, hitting the fast-moving William was quite difficult.
However, a few bullets did land on the walls or ground near him, sending broken fragments of concrete flying and causing William sharp pain as the debris hit him. One bullet even grazed his shoulder, leaving a bloody groove. If not for his Evolving person body, a chunk of flesh would likely be missing.
The sound of the machine gun fire was much louder than that of a rifle. This noise not only woke up all the survivors inside the base but also startled the zombies and mutated creatures outside.
The unique howls of zombies and the roars of mutated life forms echoed outside the base, beginning to reverberate over the entire Hope Base.
