Chapter 35 Should I Take Her as a Subordinate

Suddenly, a dark shadow swiftly passed by the window, followed by a muffled sound downstairs, sounding like a water bag bursting on the ground.

William knew without looking that this was a person contemplating suicide who had lost a reason to keep living and had resorted to despairingly taking a leap into death.

Perhaps this method was cowardly, but those who had experienced the apocalypse knew that sometimes it was indeed the right choice.

Candice had intended to answer, changing her expression and quickly walking to the window to look down. A somewhat distorted and blurry figure lay motionless below while a few zombies were slowly approaching from two hundred feet away.

"Death sometimes is a decent outcome, you have to get used to it," William said with closed eyes.

Candice gritted her teeth, a strange sorrow in her eyes. Watching the person who, even after choosing suicide, would be eaten by the same kind, her last trace of hope for the world's recovery shattered.

"The first question, you've already mentioned that zombies have very sensitive hearing and sense of smell, so there's no need to explain the reason for immediately leaving the tennis court, right." Candice leaned weakly against the window sill, looking at William. She was a bit displeased with his indifferent attitude, but after collecting herself, she began to answer the questions.

"The second question, those lizards should have been raised by someone, or perhaps they escaped from the zoo, otherwise how could such creatures be in the city."

Candice continued to answer while pondering, "Thirdly, I think he must have fled to a place he considers safe. I don't want to talk about him anymore. As for the fourth question, although I admit you are quite powerful, you are not my opponent in your current state. This dog..., I believe its strength is much inferior compared to those lizards, and with this sharp machete in my hand, I really can't see how it could pose a threat to me."

Thinking she had answered well, Candice's usual confidence in her own abilities returned.

William smirked disdainfully and raised a finger, "Only the answer to the first question was somewhat correct. Your answers to the other questions were completely wrong."

Being criticized like this, Candice naturally felt indignant, crossing her arms as she asked, "Then tell me, Why was I wrong?"

"The first question, besides what you mentioned, there's one thing you missed. Gunshots not only attract zombies but also our kind," William pointed out.

Candice was stunned, "You mean, humans?"

William nodded, gesturing toward the window. "The moonlight is good tonight. If you're lucky, you might see something standing here."

As Candice looked out, she saw several zombies gathering near the tennis court, obviously drawn by the loud gunshot earlier. She continued observing, about to mock the man, when she suddenly noticed several figures moving on the school campus side, swiftly avoiding zombies and taking cover. Clearly, these were survivors.

Were there really others like us? Candice's face lit up. In truth, the training she received always emphasized teamwork and serving society. In the current situation, safety should increase with more people gathering together.

This theory was held true during peacetime and was quite valid. However, in the apocalypse, sometimes humans could be far more dangerous than zombies.

William recalled encountering those armed individuals collecting magic crystals in the teaching building. They clearly had no good intentions. If they heard the gunshot, they would likely come searching.

"Don't be too happy. If you were still there, you might have been killed by those people," William's words dampened Candice's enthusiasm. She wanted to argue but remembered her previous companion's betrayal, so she remained silent.

"Secondly, those mutated lizards aren't from the zoo or someone's pet; they're from the school's laboratory," William explained.

"How do you know?" Candice asked.

"There are tiny ID tags hanging on the tails of those lizards," William revealed.

Shocked, Candice realized she had fought those mutated lizards several times but never noticed this detail. If what William said was true, his observational skills were remarkable.

"As for your betrayed companion, he never left. He hid in the ventilation ducts and followed us until we encountered the first zombie," William continued.

"What!" Candice was astonished, unable to believe someone had followed her without her noticing.

William coldly remarked, "Your companion is not ordinary. He's very alert, intelligent, at least as skilled as you, and he has killed before."

Sensitive to the aura of killing, William easily sensed danger. Surviving over a year in the apocalypse allowed one to discern such threats effortlessly.

The fact that he could track Candice, who had rigorous training, without detection indicated the man with the nasal voice was formidable. At first sight, William knew he was extraordinary, perhaps even more dangerous than Candice. The man exuded an aura of death, which might not be significant in the apocalypse but was intense in peacetime, suggesting he had taken more than one life.

So, his identity was almost revealed. Either he was a special agent or a soldier who had carried out many dangerous missions, or he was a shady killer.

Regardless of his demeanor or actions, William couldn't see him as a military man, so he could almost be certain that the guy was a criminal, a criminal with serious offenses!"

Only a naive fool like Candice, full of righteousness and new to society, would have no doubts at all, almost losing her life to such a person's deception.

William gestured toward Candice, drawing her attention to a gun pointed at her from under his leg. The gun had been aimed at her since she entered the room, and he was ready to shoot her as soon as she posed a threat to him.

"Remember, from now on, you're never completely safe. You must remain vigilant at all times," William warned solemnly. "Unless you don't want to live."

The flickering flames illuminated Candice's face, and William noticed her beauty for the first time.

Formerly a poor student, William had eyes only for the campus beauty Heidi after his stroke of luck.

But after his rebirth, whether it was Sienna he met by chance or Natalie who stuck to him like a piece of candy, or even the stubborn Lucy, they were beautiful women. Sienna was full of a lady-like charm, with both appearance and figure. Internet celebrity Natalie was charming and alluring, while Lucy was intellectually beautiful and wore delicate glasses.

Candice, with her neat, short hair, healthy wheat-toned skin, and striking features, exuded a perfect blend of strength and beauty.

In just one night, he had encountered a variety of beautiful women, stirring a ripple in William's heart. However, he quickly calmed himself.

These women had no connection to him, and even if they did, it's something to consider for the future. So far, no one had earned William's trust, and he even harbored some aversion toward Natalie and Lucy.

Accustomed to evaluating people by post-apocalyptic standards, he found the two women were burdens, offering little besides dragging him down. Sienna was a future powerhouse, and Candice possessed skills that could be helpful. These two could truly assist him.

Watching Candice roast the tongue of a Blood Tongue Lizard on a wooden chair, William, for the first time, entertained the thought of taking her as a subordinate.
