Chapter 60 Candice's Defense Line

Candice held the old rifle in her hand, standing in the corner of the wall, looking somewhat dazed.

"Candice, what's wrong? You've been staring into space since you came back." Beside her, a middle-aged man in his forties held an automatic rifle, his gaze shifting back and forth on a group of mutant rats gradually approaching from a distance. Although his expression seemed relaxed, his hand gripping the gun was unusually pale.

Anyone would feel nervous facing hundreds of cat-sized rats running wild.

Candice coughed lightly and shook her head, saying, "It's nothing. These big rats are too disgusting."

The middle-aged man smiled, "I thought you were scared by that big monster."

"Candice wouldn't be afraid. She once faced six strong men with knives and took them all down without fear," a carefree young man laughed, his face still bearing traces of acne scars.

"That's right, Captain Wright is the women's combat champion of the entire state, ranking in the top five in the free combat category!" A burly man turned his head to look at the young man and said with a smile, "Do you know what top five means? It means that among all the male police officers in the state, only four people are better than Captain Wright. The rest have to beg for mercy when they see Captain Wright!"

This conversation relaxed the tense atmosphere in the room, and the initial nervousness was eased.

"Candice is also a great shooter." The speaker was another woman in the five-person team, a woman in her early thirties, dressed in camouflage and wearing tall combat boots.

In terms of appearance, this woman had a slight gap compared to Candice, but her mature demeanor and sexy figure completely made up for it. In the eyes of the male officers in the police department, this woman was even more beautiful than Candice, and she was the goddess in the police force.

But if you saw her as a fragile woman, you would be mistaken. She had worked on the front line for eight years, completing hundreds of tasks with a one hundred percent completion rate, a record that no one has broken to this day. Only Candice came close, with a four-year one hundred percent completion rate, still a considerable distance from this woman.

However, this female police officer later got married and switched to clerical duties. The police force lost a legend but gained a charming logistics officer.

Candice said, "Michelle, you're teasing me. Everyone knows that you hold eight out of twelve shooting records in our department!"

Michelle Smith, the female police, replied, "But I haven't shot in a long time. I'm getting old, and my pistol skills have declined."

The three men burst into laughter.

This five-person team was put together temporarily. Candice had her own subordinates. But after the apocalypse, few people could return to headquarters. The team consisted of eight people, with only the young man and the burly man under Candice's command.

The middle-aged man had been Candice's instructor at school, but he was injured later and, like Michelle, switched to clerical duties.

After the apocalypse began, some people escaped from their homes to headquarters, while others were trapped in headquarters and couldn't return home.

Both the middle-aged man and Candice had returned from their homes to headquarters, but unlike Candice, whose family was not in the city, the middle-aged man had lost all his family.

"Jack, what are you laughing at? Louis is alone, so he only needs to worry about himself. But you have parents. Aren't you worried about them?" Ivan Adams lightly kicked Jack Campbell and jokingly scolded him.

"Worried about what? Director Adams, you know what my parents are like. They are healthy and smart. They must be hiding somewhere waiting for me to find them. I'll go back once I become an Evolver. I'm not in a hurry," Jack answered.

"You're truly heartless," Michelle said and glared at Jack, a hint of worry barely noticeable on her very young face.

She was one of those trapped in headquarters and couldn't return home. It was almost impossible for her to move around the city on her own unless she became an Evolver. So Michelle also wanted to go home after becoming an Evolver.

Ivan said softly, "It's okay, Michelle. Caleb's team is a government department, located in a newly opened area with many buildings and few people, which means fewer zombies. Besides, the armored battalion is not far from them, so they must have gone to guard the area immediately."

Michelle smiled, thanking Ivan for his reassurance.

In fact, the reason Michelle wasn't too worried was exactly what Ivan said. After the apocalypse began, she had been in contact with her husband when communication was still available. Her husband was safe, not turning into a zombie. She knew he was holed up in a government district, with the armored battalion heading his way. He should have been under protection by now.

Ivan asked, "But Candice, why did you say you want to leave?"

Everyone stared at Candice after Ivan's words.

"I..." In Candice's mind, the upright figure of William appeared. The promise she made before parting came to her mind once again. She felt that William must be nearby.

But just as Candice was about to answer, the mutant rats in front of their shooting point suddenly accelerated, starting to cross their defense line, and the corridor behind them immediately echoed with loud commands!

Someone shouted, "Fire! We must not let them break through our defense line!"

For a moment, the sound of gunfire merged into one, interrupting Candice's explanation.

Although they were not a team before, each person was skilled, and they knew how to cooperate. The dense firepower made the rat group in front of their room scatter.

These First-Level Mutant Rats were still unable to withstand the modern firearms developed over hundreds of years by humans.

The other rooms in the building also echoed with loud gunfire, making the entire building seem like a monster spewing fire. The surrounding corpses and mutant creatures fell in droves.

This rear defense line, mainly composed of police and military officers, demonstrated much greater strength than other surviving teams as soon as they opened fire. Neither zombies nor mutant creatures could cross their defense line.

However, tragically, because of this, before the main forces like Owen and the Second Battalion opened fire on a large scale, the attacks here were the strongest and most noticeable, attracting the attention of the Corpse Ape.

The huge creature turned, pointing the steel pillar in their direction. With its roar, countless corpses rushed toward the building, followed closely by the Corpse Ape.

"Damn it! We've attracted that big guy over here!"

The five members of Candice's team looked gloomy. The burly man, Louis Anderson, cursed while adjusting his aim and started shooting at the Corpse Ape. The distance of 330 feet was well within his range!

Many others had the same idea as Louis. They knew that if the Corpse Ape reached the ground floor, it would use a few blows to flatten them all.

However, after countless bullets poured onto the Corpse Ape, they could only leave small white marks on its body. They couldn't break through its defense at all, and its large hands were tightly guarding its head!

For a moment, these police and military officers found themselves helpless against this creature.
