Chapter 13 Humanity
Life would find its own direction.
It was a very famous saying uttered by a scientist in the face of the catastrophic changes of the world.
The mutations had just begun, with mutant cockroaches and mutant willow trees appearing one after another, confirming the correctness of this statement. As the original masters of the Earth, humans naturally would not lag behind.
Although the apocalypse had only just begun a few hours ago, through the still functioning networks, phones, televisions, radios, and personal experiences, many people had already realized the arrival of doomsday. They began to adapt to these drastic changes with great effort.
However, this process of adaptation was also a test of human nature. Some people would burst forth with a light of goodness that could be deemed sacred, while others would exude vicious cruelty and selfish desires.
It was just like the scene unfolding at this moment on the second floor of the cafeteria.
The stairs leading to the lobby on the first floor were blocked by piles of tables, with nearly a hundred zombies stuck on the stair platform between the first and second floors. They allowed the table legs to pierce their bodies, their eyes fixed on the fresh bodies upstairs.
"Jason, are we really going to be okay? The police won't show up tomorrow, will they?"
A young man in a slightly greasy denim outfit crouched in front of Jason Foster, his face showing some unease, occasionally glanced toward a corner of the cafeteria.
There lay a scattered pile of tables and chairs, with a naked body lying in the middle. The girl's eyes were lifeless as she stared at the ceiling, as if nothing here concerned her. Her youthfully tender body was now covered in bruises.
All of this indicated that this flower-like girl had just suffered inhuman treatment and torture.
Jason narrowed his eyes, making the scar on his forehead parallel to his eyebrows look even more sinister. He kicked out, causing the young man in denim to tumble over.
Jason mocked. "Fuck! You weren't thinking about the police earlier, and now you remember the police!"
The young man who was kicked stood up, feeling embarrassed as he saw the other three companions laughing heartlessly.
Jason stood up, revealing his mountain-like muscular body. On his bare back was a black dragon tattoo, which seemed to come alive whenever his muscles twitched as if ready to soar.
He walked over to the denim-clad young man, grabbed the back of his collar, and dragged him to the stairs, pointing at the increasingly aggressive zombies who were once living people. "Oliver, do you see? People have turned into this, and many people have turned into this. Can there still be police? Have you seen 'Resident Evil'? It's just like the movies now! There won't be any police!"
Jason clenched his fist, releasing Oliver Taylor and asking his four henchmen, "What do you think those things on the zombies' foreheads are?"
They gathered around, commenting on the zombies, but couldn't come up with anything substantial, which irritated Jason.
They were originally from nearby gangs and happened to be having a barbecue nearby when the apocalypse began. They witnessed people around them turning into zombies and began to run into the university in panic, following many students into the cafeteria.
Since the cafeteria on the first floor was the only one open at the time, the second floor was empty. They went upstairs and blocked the stairs with tables, managing to keep the zombies at bay.
However, Jason and his four henchmen were not good people to begin with. In peacetime, they were constrained by laws and law enforcement agencies. But now, everything was chaotic, with even man-eating monsters appearing, igniting their evil intentions.
After waiting on the second floor of the cafeteria for a few hours, they realized there was no rescue and no police and learned through the network that it was a global disaster with governments worldwide paralyzed. They began to oppress the students who were also seeking refuge on the second floor of the cafeteria.
After beating some disobedient boys to the point of spitting blood, they raped a pretty girl. Their actions were despicable and enraging.
Among the dozen or so students, half were girls, with five or six male students left. Two were unconscious from the beating, while the others dared not show their dissatisfaction, even trembling in a corner like the girls.
"After infection, they'll turn into a zombie. So, can we..." Apart from his reputation for being strong and able to fight, Jason was also a thoughtful person. He instinctively felt that there was something wrong with the obvious crystals on the zombies' foreheads, but he didn't dare to kill one and dig it out for study.
However, villains always had cunning ways to achieve their goals. Jason looked at the group of students, getting an idea.
Walking into the crowd, he surveyed the students who were completely intimidated by him, his gaze falling on a female student. Although this girl wasn't as pretty as the one they had just raped, she was still attractive. She was definitely a beauty. And more importantly, she had a good figure, the most voluptuous among the girls.
"Kyle, Frank, drag her out."
His subordinates immediately reached out and pulled the female student out amidst the cries and screams, even slapping her face a couple of times because of her vigorous struggle.
"Let the zombies scratch her to create a wound, then tie her up and wait for her to mutate. I want to see what that crystal really is."
Upon hearing this, the girl turned pale. The horror of those monsters was no less than that of these thugs for her. She wanted to scream. But thinking that she had already screamed earlier, which only attracted more zombies, and with no one coming to her rescue, she gradually became desperate.
"Are you scared? Don't you want to die?" Jason approached the girl, who was already weak on the ground, pinching her smooth and delicate chin. With a mouth full of cigarette stench, he leaned over to her face and said, "There are many people here. It doesn't have to be you, and it can be someone else. But if you don't want it to be you, you have to have sex with me."
The other henchmen were initially stunned but then burst into laughter, praising Jason for being clever.
The girl was stunned for a moment before realizing what this thug was asking her to do. Her tears of humiliation couldn't help but flow down her face. She looked at her classmates, hoping they would help her, but all she received was silence. Even the boy who usually cared for her a lot and had been pursuing her lowered his head as if he knew nothing.
She had just made a vow in her heart that as long as the boy helped her, even if it was just a word or a rebuke to these thugs on her behalf, she would be willing to be with him and have sex with him.
But everything fell into despair in silence.
She knew that she might lose many precious things today. She glanced at the classmate who had just been raped, the struggle and humiliation in her eyes fleeting, replaced by a hint of determination!
She thought, ‘Since everything had collapsed, let's die together!’
This sudden feeling of madness gave her a hint of pleasure.
Just then, gunshots suddenly rang out downstairs, causing these thugs to stand up in alarm, also saving her. Even Oliver, who was sitting in fear, shouted that the police had arrived, realizing they couldn't escape now!
The other students also raised their heads, their faces regaining a glimmer of hope and brightness.
At the sound of the gunshots, Jason trembled. Despite his power, he held great respect for the law and was afraid of the sudden arrival of the police like Oliver.
After a moment of silence, he calmed down and walked briskly to the window, just in time to see a man with an axe digging out a crystal from a strange willow tree, which was similar to the one in the center of the zombies' foreheads!
Jason felt shocked as he realized two things. Firstly, it wasn't the police who had arrived, but survivors like himself. Secondly, this survivor knew the purpose of the crystal!
Seeing the man and the woman downstairs quickly leaving, Jason immediately began to shout at his henchmen.
"Hurry up. Let's pack up and leave!"
Kyle Ward, Oliver, Frank Perez, and Samuel Hall were taken aback, weakly asking their boss, "We're trapped. How do we leave?"
Jason angrily said, "Fools, look over there!"
The four henchmen looked in the direction of the stairs pointed out by Jason. To their surprise, most of the zombies that had been surrounding them had turned and walked away, obviously attracted by the gunshots just now. Now, there were only a dozen or so left, with most of them impaled on table legs and unable to move.
But even with only a few remaining zombies, the group hesitated, none willing to take the risk. After all, they had seen people scratched by zombies turn into monsters within half an hour.
"It's not wrong to call you fools. There are these students here. Throw them to the zombies and run!"
At Jason's words, the four henchmen eagerly grabbed the students who had started running around in response to Jason's words.
In front of several experienced thugs, these students had no resistance at all and were quickly caught and dragged toward the stairs.
While watching all this coldly, Jason remained standing by the window. A hint of suspicion rose in his heart as he looked at the direction William and the long-haired woman were running.
He thought, 'That direction seems to be where that bright light fell just now.'
