Chapter 106 Attacked
The inscriptions were all temporary.
In other words, every time a professional skill was used, a new mark must be made on the blade. After use, the mark's power would disappear. Moreover, the inscription had a time limit, very brief, just a few seconds. If not used within this time, it will also disappear.
How William wished that an inscription could stay on the blade forever after being made once. That way, he could still use the professional skill of the blade technique next time, saving a lot of mental energy. Additionally, it could save a lot of time in battle or catch the opponent off guard.
However, these shortcomings were just minor flaws that couldn't overshadow the power of this skill. William was already more than satisfied.
If this profession appeared a few years later, it would be impossible to buy without ten bottles of four-star Evolution Elixir.
Today, it was his good luck to obtain it.
After taking down a few zombies that were attracted by the commotion and extracting their Magic Crystals, William climbed over the fence and ran back. As he approached, he heard pill's angry roar.
Anyone who had seen cats and dogs fight would know that the sounds they made while fighting were completely different from their usual calls. Now, pill's cry clearly indicated it was involved in a fight!
He had just told pill to go back first, and now it was fighting? What about the others...
William immediately quickened his pace. He knew the team must be in danger. Anyone daring to take on a team full of Evolving persons and first-level mutated pets could not be easy to deal with!
'Air Shield' suddenly shattered, and Candice let out a muffled groan, retreating rapidly with a trace of blood at the corner of her mouth.
Behind her, Lucy's face also turned pale with the shattering of the Air Shield. She gritted her teeth and raised her hand to cast another shield on Candice.
Thomas scoffed, "Very impressive skill. You healed her once and threw up six shields. I'm curious to see how many more times you can buff her up!"
Thomas looked thinner than a few days ago. His military uniform was gone, replaced by a set of gray-brown clothes that were somewhat special. A faint glow of the same color as the clothes could be seen on top, indicating it was not ordinary outfit.
Having spent a long time with William, Candice and the others knew this was gray-grade equipment, far superior to ordinary items.
Without the military uniform, it seemed Thomas had abandoned his righteousness. Now, he exuded an evil aura, always wearing a sinister smile that made him look extremely unpleasant.
Thomas remarked, "Nice blade, but you're too weak to unleash its full power. After today, it will be mine."
Jack yelled, "No way!"
Before Candice could say anything, Jack, lying on the ground, spat at Thomas with a ferocious expression.
Thomas glanced at Jack coldly and snorted without saying anything.
From the moment Thomas appeared with his men, Jack was the first to charge recklessly. As expected, being a newly evolved one-star Evolving person, he couldn't hold on long enough to last a single round against Thomas, who had been a two-star Evolving person for several days. Jack was severely injured, losing his combat ability.
On one side, Owen and Natalie were also fighting. Both were one-star Evolving persons, but Natalie, being a professional, had an Air Shield, giving her the upper hand. However, Owen was not easy to deal with, and Natalie had to protect Lucy's flank, preventing others from harming her, so she could only stay on the defensive.
On another side, Pill was facing three Evolving persons. Already injured and having just used its innate skill, it was struggling against the three one-star Evolving persons. It had been hit several times and if not for the inherent resilience of mutated animals, it probably wouldn't have been able to get up by now.
Candice, Pill, and Natalie guarded Lucy from three directions, while Michelle stood beside Lucy with a gun. On one hand, she could block anyone trying to rush over, and on the other, she could use the gun to intimidate the enemy.
However, this intimidation was more for self-protection. Besides Thomas, Owen, and the other three Evolving persons, there were about a dozen people scattered in the shadows around, all armed and aiming at them.
Guns were indeed powerful in the early days of the apocalypse, posing a significant threat to mutated zombies and Evolving persons. However, at the same time, those with guns were also very cautious in their use. Unless it was a matter of life and death, they generally wouldn't fire.
The gunshots were too loud and could attract unknown dangers. If lucky, it might just be a few scattered zombies. If unlucky, it could be a group of mutated animals.
So, about a week into the apocalypse, those with guns had gained some experience in this regard. Hence, Thomas and his group didn't fire but chose to launch a direct assault.
If it were any other survivor team, Candice and the others wouldn't be in such a dire situation. After all, they were all Evolving persons, with two professionals among them, making them very strong.
But unfortunately, it was Thomas who launched the assault. As a two-star Evolving person, he was already much stronger than the others. Moreover, he also had a gray-grade combat suit, rendering ordinary attacks useless. Even Natalie's Quadrilateral dance spinning only made Thomas retreat without breaking the suit's defense, leaving just a few marks.
With Owen and the other three Evolving persons, Candice and the others were completely on the defensive.
Holding a pair of gray-grade daggers, Thomas launched another ghostly attack. Candice couldn't keep up with his speed and could only rely on Thomas's fear of the Edge of the Moon, holding the blade block in front of her.
However, in such a passive situation, how could she defend against everything? Thomas found an opportunity and stabbed Candice towards her ribs.
Just before the dagger hit Candice, the Air Shield blocked in front of her body. The dagger stabbed into it. With a flash of light and a shattering sound, the Air Shield was broken again.
"One more time, let's go!" Thomas didn't stop, saying this as he swung his dagger from another angle.
Lucy gritted her teeth and cast another Air Shield on Candice.
Now they could only hold on until William returned. Otherwise, Thomas would be enough to slaughter them all. Lucy knew this well. She had already used a Restoration spell on Candice once and on Pill when it returned. She had cast five shields on Candice, one on Natalie, and one on Pill.
Now her mental energy was on the verge of exhaustion. She couldn't even spare a thought for Pill, whose shield had shattered, or for Jack, injured on the ground. She could only protect Candice.
But she didn't know how much longer she could hold on. Maybe next time, she wouldn't be able to cast another Air Shield.
'William, why aren't you back yet?' She desperately called in her heart.
