Chapter 253 All Cards on the Table
The skill that Devil's Gold bestowed upon the Whip was called "Wandering Wind Blade."
At its inception, even William was fooled by its ordinary name, assuming it was merely a basic wind-based attack skill. Such skills were not very common in the previous world, but many survivors had them.
However, when they saw Natalie use it, its power gave everyone a small shock.
Every time Natalie swung the Whip, a Wind Blade would appear at its tip. It was similar to The Light of Full Strength, but the Wind Blade wouldn't disappear immediately. Instead, it would wander around the target, waiting for an opportunity to attack.
Once it encountered the target, it would launch an attack. Whether it hit or was blocked, it would bounce off until its energy was exhausted.
Its speed wasn't fast, but it was quite annoying. Moreover, it could produce more than one Wind Blade. Natalie had tested it. Without using any professional skills, she could create up to ten Wind Blades.
Imagine having more than ten sharp Wind Blades circling around you, occasionally launching an attack. No one would find that pleasant.
When using Quadrilateral Dance Spinning, the effect of Wandering Wind Blade was maximized. Amidst the countless whip shadows, the number of Wind Blades could reach twenty!
The upgrade of the weapon significantly boosted Natalie's strength, making her even more irritable. Seeing her recently well-acquainted friends being killed, she didn't care if her enemy was a level-three creature. She charged forward with Candice and Lucy, initiating the attack.
Meanwhile, Candice provided support to Natalie, who had quite a knack for drawing fire.
And Lucy cast small shields around them, making sneak attacks impossible for them.
The Wind Blade slashed at the Hexarm Zombie, producing a metallic clashing sound.
Although it was slow, the Hexarm Zombie had a strong defense. So the Wind Blade's strike only left a white mark on its body, not even breaking the skin.
"Fuck!" Natalie cursed and suddenly distanced herself from the Hexarm Zombie. "Candice, catch!"
Candice silently took Natalie's place, swinging the Edge of the Moon. The Knife Light flashed as she agilely circled the Hexarm Zombie, making it impossible for its slow but heavy six arms to hit her.
Natalie ran to the side, whipping one zombie after another. In no time, she had gathered quite a few zombies into a small area. Candice and Lucy, who had a tacit understanding with her, simultaneously retreated from the circle at a certain moment.
Natalie then activated her professional skill, "Quadrilateral Dance Spinning."
The shadows of the Whip immediately covered the area.
When using a gray-level Whip before, its shadows weren't very noticeable. But now, it became a white-level weapon, and the shadows became clear, looking like a white curtain from afar. Twenty Wind Blades were instantly released, adding even more momentum to this already impressive attack.
Many zombies were directly shredded into pieces under the dual attack of the Whip and Wind Blades. Even a few level-two zombies with low defense didn't escape their fate.
This is the advantage of combining equipment and profession. If Natalie were holding an ordinary Whip or the previous gray one, she would be helpless against level-two zombies.
The level-three Hexarm Zombie was also shocked by this tactic. Since Natalie's main attacks were focused on it, at least one-third of the Whip shadows and ten Wind Blades were concentrated near its head, forcing it to raise its bulky arms to block the attacks.
Even the smallest damage, when accumulated, could become deadly.
Candice silently sneaked to the Hexarm Zombie's side and stabbed a knife into the gap between its arms.
The Hexarm Zombie immediately let out a miserable cry and retreated quickly.
Candice silently cursed in her heart.
Although the knife had pierced the Hexarm Zombie's head, it didn't go deep. Firstly, this creature's defense was really strong. Secondly, it was too tall, forcing Candice to jump and attack upwards, which resulted in insufficient power and an awkward angle. So, although she severely injured it, she didn't kill it.
Suddenly, several gunshots rang out.
The Hexarm Zombie's head suddenly burst with blood, and its body fell backward. Jack, covered in blood, stood not far behind them, grinning foolishly at them with a gun in his hand.
Jack's joy turned to sorrow as a level-two zombie behind him directly crashed into him, pinning him down. The zombie's mouth suddenly opened wide, revealing a flower-like proboscis, aiming to bite his face.
Lucy, terrified, quickly cast an Air Shield, blocking the proboscis.
Jack gritted his teeth, grabbed the enemy's throat with one hand, and plunged the Edge of the Moon into its head from the side.
"Thanks, Lucy!" Jack shouted, pushing away the corpse of the level-two zombie and waving at Lucy in gratitude.
"Hurry over here. Let's gather together and try to kill as many as we can. William can't hold on much longer. He needs our help!" Candice shouted.
As a former captain of the police force, she had the habit of observing the battlefield while fighting. She saw William battling a level-four zombie alone. Even though she had great confidence in him, she never thought he could challenge an enemy two levels higher.
Jack immediately jumped over and joined the group. Using Natalie's long-range distraction ability, he and Candice began a frenzied slaughter under Lucy's protection.
William was indeed in a tough battle.
The strength of the level-four Throat Seizer exceeded his previous estimates.
The two tentacles growing from its head could be used as weapons even without activating the Throat Lock skill. When swung, they acted like whips; when thrust, they were like spears; and when smashed down, they were like iron rods.
William tried to dodge as much as possible, but whenever he tried to block with the Edge of the Moon, his arm would go numb for a while. The tentacles' ability to switch between soft and hard forms made them unpredictable. He had been hit in the right chest earlier, and the pain was still intense, even affecting the movement of his right arm.
The speed boost from the Bloodstride Boots wasn't enough to make up for the two-level evolution gap between them.
Fortunately, the Energy Absorbing Satan continuously healed his injuries, allowing him to keep fighting.
William had other tricks up his sleeve; he was just waiting for a good opportunity to kill it himself. He preferred solving problems on his own rather than waiting for help.
Suddenly, the sparse gunfire turned into a barrage. Ordinary soldiers retreated into the main building and fired from the windows. The higher vantage point, coupled with their accumulated combat experience, greatly enhanced their effectiveness against the ordinary zombies.
The Evolving persons in the battle were now surrounded by layers of zombies. The ordinary zombies moved towards the main building, their feeding ground. Although the Evolving persons were tastier, they were the forbidden prey of higher-level zombies and not for the ordinary ones to enjoy.
By now, the original horde of over twenty thousand zombies had dwindled to less than five thousand, but the number of survivors had also halved since the battle began.
Both sides were locked in a fierce struggle, and it was uncertain who would falter first.
William's eyes were fixed on the level-four Throat Seizer and the Corpse Ape beneath it, and his mind was rapidly calculating various possibilities.
As the long tentacle whistled down again, William raised the Edge of the Moon, forcing the tentacle to veer away.
The Corpse Ape's giant arm also came down with a fist, its speed increasing rapidly. By the time it was near William's head, it was as swift and fierce as a meteor falling from the sky, forcing William to dodge to the side. But another tentacle, using this attack as cover, shot out like a ghost!
William's hair stood on end, and he suddenly exerted force to lean back. But just as he was about to move, he suddenly swayed slightly.
The tentacle pierced through his bulletproof vest and into his left rib.
Michelle, not far away, gasped in shock at the sight.
Despite the blood spurting from his body and trickling from the corner of his mouth, William's expression didn't change. He grabbed the tentacle with his left hand and twisted his body, wrapping the tentacle around his waist.
The Edge of the Moon slashed down, aiming to sever the tentacle.
The level-four Throat Seizer was shocked. It hadn't expected William to be so ruthless, willing to get injured to cut off its tentacle. It knew the power of its own attack. If the tentacle wasn't held still the moment it pierced the body, the internal organs would be shredded in the next second!
William was too bold! Wasn't he afraid of being killed if he was even a bit slower?
However, after the initial shock, the Throat Seizer calmed down and shot out its second tentacle like lightning. The weapon it feared so much was now descending and temporarily no longer a threat. William's wrist holding the weapon was its best target.
Once both of his hands were controlled, even if the Throat Seizer couldn't move, the Corpse Ape could crush William into pulp. The level-four Throat Seizer's mouth curled into a smile, much like a human's.
William, whose wrist was now entangled by another tentacle, also smiled. "You've been tricked."
"Avant-garde mechanic!" he shouted.
A small robot suddenly appeared under his arm, its humanoid face tilted upward, with its shooting port aimed directly at the Throat Seizer sitting on the Corpse Ape.
William slightly loosened his grip on the Edge of the Moon, and a Magic Crystal accurately fell into the energy slot of the avant-garde mechanic, instantly activating it.
"Activate Form 1, Ray Turret!" the mechanic voice said.
