Chapter 228 Keep Chasing and You'll Die
"Go!" William hollered, grabbing Cecil, who was taller than him, and with a mighty heave, tossed him backward. Cecil sailed through the air, landing safely in the waiting arms of Jack and Elijah on the other side.
After blasting out a few beams of The Light of Full Strength, William hopped onto Pill's back. Right then, Pill unleashed its ultimate move, Fine Needle and Dense Thread, shooting out a ton of golden hairs at the zombies, mowing them down like grass. Pill, with William on its back, took a few running steps and leaped over the first trench, which was over ten feet wide, then kept jumping over more trenches in seconds, rejoining the squad.
Meanwhile, the zombie horde was tumbling into the deep trenches in droves. Even though the trenches filled up fast, they managed to slow down the zombie chase.
The heavy trucks loaded with food roared to life and sped off.
But before anyone could celebrate, two massive shadows dropped from the sky, appearing right above the convoy.
William was the quickest to react, swinging the Edge of the Moon on the truck. The Knife Light hit the stones mid-air, shattering them into tiny fragments that rained down around the convoy.
Someone cursed, "Fuck!"
A bunch of folks got caught off guard and were hit by the fragments, getting injured. A few unlucky ones got hit in the head, causing fatal wounds.
Two monsters, each about sixteen feet tall, showed their terrifying faces to everyone!
Michelle, covered in dirty blood, stood on the last truck with William. "That fast?" she muttered in shock.
They watched as the two giant monsters, a few hundred feet away, strode towards them.
"Double-headed Demon!" William said softly, a hint of caution in his eyes.
Double-headed Demons were like giants among monsters. Even though their sixteen-foot height was short for giants, they were still massive compared to humans. William had gotten intel and hoped they wouldn't catch these two monsters' attention. Even if they did, he hoped they could bail before the monsters showed up.
But now, just as the convoy started to leave, these two creatures were already so close!
While William processed this turn of events, the two Double-headed Demons reached the trenches, kicking away the zombies underfoot and leaping over the trenches in a few strides.
Seeing these sixteen-foot-tall humanoid creatures with two heads and black-purple skin, William knew that if he didn't come up with a plan, the convoy would be toast.
He wasn't worried about himself. He was worried about the food.
He pulled out the sniper rifle he had snagged from Hope Base.
Over the past few days, he had used several bottles of Evolution Elixir to have Yves get two regular sniper rifles and perform Homogeneous Strengthening on this one. He also reinforced it with materials from level-three mutated creatures, turning the gun into a gray-level weapon.
But he didn't use Devil's Gold on this weapon, as it would be too wasteful for a non-blueprint-made weapon.
But the bullets for this gun had been meticulously processed by William, giving them armor-piercing properties and immense power.
William held his breath, aiming the scope at the left Double-headed Demon, targeting the eye beneath its black Magic Crystal.
From a few hundred feet away, this tricked-out sniper rifle made it feel like shooting fish in a barrel.
The bullet zipped through the air, hitting the Double-headed Demon's eye in a flash.
But then, William was a bit taken aback—the shot got blocked!
The Double-headed Demon had thrown up its arm to shield its head.
It reacted that fast?
A lot of high-level creatures have a sixth sense for danger. In his past life, many survivors developed this ability. William, having been reborn, still had this sense, even though his body was back to square one.
But usually, this sense showed up in mid-level or higher creatures, like level four and above. William didn't expect this level-three Double-headed Demon to block a nearly point-blank bullet.
This could only mean one thing: these two monsters were super strong and on the verge of hitting level four!
Even though the shot was blocked, it wasn't for nothing. It blew apart the monster's thick arm, leaving its giant hand hanging by a thread, and a shower of nasty blood rained down like a mini storm.
The Double-headed Demon roared, shaking the mountains and forests around it. The zombie horde went nuts, retreating and losing their drive to chase the convoy.
The survivors weren't doing much better, many covering their ears as the roar left them dizzy and out of it. Luckily, they weren't in the middle of the zombie horde, or they'd be toast.
'This must be some innate skill of the Double-headed Demon,' William thought as he fired his gun again.
This time, he aimed at the injured Double-headed Demon, going for its eye.
Its other hand got blown off!
At this range, the tricked-out sniper rifle made it feel like point-blank. The moment he pulled the trigger, the bullet was already there. The monster could sense the danger and block it with its arm, but dodging it entirely was a no-go since it was all about size, not speed and agility.
After two shots, the other monster launched its attack, chucking a giant stone.
People finally noticed that both monsters had big baskets made of some unknown black vine on their backs, filled with huge stones.
William pulled the trigger again, aiming at the stone.
The stone shattered, preventing any casualties, but the convoy got hit by fragments again, making the last truck rattle like crazy.
Another stone came flying, and William shattered it with another shot.
Then came the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth stones...
Each one got shattered by William, and the survivors learned to shield themselves with food bags. Even if the bags got messed up, it was better than dying.
After several stones, William finally found a chance to shoot, hitting the uninjured Double-headed Demon in the gut, creating a big hole and killing their urge to chase.
This was the ultimate warning: keep chasing, and you're dead.
The demons could only roar in anger at the retreating convoy, throwing the remaining stones to the ground in frustration.
William wiped the sweat from his forehead and tossed the empty magazine.
The sniper rifle bullets he had stockpiled over many days were all used up in this fight!
