Chapter 340 The Paper That Can Change the Future

Chester woke up, but man, he was in bad shape. If it wasn't for Lucy being this badass Apostle of Light with her killer healing spells, Chester would've been a goner.

This was the second time the Captain of the Mercy Vanguard warband got saved by Cloud Peak Manor.

"Captain Wright, have a seat," one of Chester's guys said when he saw William coming. He quickly grabbed a chair for him and showed a lot of respect to Edna and David, who were with William.

Chester used to be the big shot Captain of the Mercy Vanguard warband, the top dogs in Accraville City. But now, things had changed. William was the new top dog in town, and Cloud Peak Manor was looking like the new powerhouse.

Chester, looking pretty rough, said, "Seems like every time I see you, I'm stuck in bed."

Even though Chester made it through, he lost a hand and was seriously messed up. No one knew how much he'd bounce back. The former number one in Accraville City now looked pretty down and out.

Last time, William needed him, and he hadn't lost any limbs. With Lucy's treatment and William's help, Chester bounced back quickly and even got stronger.

But this time was different. Even if William had something to help him recover, losing a hand was a big deal and would seriously cut down his strength.

William smiled, "So, what's next for you?"

Chester, looking pale and scruffy, still had a bit of that old spark in his eyes. "I can't lead the Mercy Vanguard warband like this. I let my deputy, who's also a three-star Evolving person, take charge for now." He smiled painfully, "Captain Wright, you're not interested in a cripple like me, are you? Want me to join you?"

William shook his head, "No offense, Mr. White, even though our previous collaborations went well, and I didn't expect anything for saving you this time, your intentions are too obvious. I don't trust you, at least not yet. I have to look out for my people."

Chester laughed, but it hurt. After a fit of coughing and a bit of rest, he said, "Captain Wright, I like your style. Even though I'm not the Captain of the Mercy Vanguard warband anymore, I don't want to be under anyone right now. It's the only pride I've got left. So, what brings you here?"

Chester knew William wouldn't just drop by for no reason. He didn't buy the whole free life-saving act. In William's eyes, Chester still had some value.

William said, "I need some info of Accraville City."

They chatted for a bit, and Chester spilled everything he knew. He even handed William a small notebook with all the intel the Mercy Vanguard warband had gathered over the past few days. It had info on the locations and strengths of different camps, the positions of roulette wheels, the skills of powerful individuals, and the spots where zombie hordes and mutated creatures were hanging out.

This notebook was gold, almost worth a bottle of three-star Evolution Elixir to William. Even though its value would drop a bit each day as things changed, it was still super useful in the short term.

After tucking the notebook away, William stood up. "Captain Chester, don't lose hope. There are some special professions out there that can restore your hand. Keep an eye out for them, and we'll help gather info too. If we find anything, we'll let you know."

Chester nodded, grateful. Even though he didn't want to be William's subordinate, he still had a good impression of him and Cloud Peak Manor.

Once they were a bit away from Chester's room, Edna gave William a playful pat on the back. "Did you bring David and me just to watch you chat? Also, I don't buy that Chester's really giving up his spot as Captain of the Mercy Vanguard warband."

In all of Cloud Peak Manor, only Edna and Michelle dared to talk to William like that.

"I don't buy it either," William replied with a grin. Then he suddenly got serious. "If something ever happens to Cloud Peak Manor and we can't hold it, you guys should consider seeking refuge with Chester. Compared to others, he's got decent character and enough strength to protect you."

His words shocked both of them. William had been acting a bit off since he got back today, but no one thought much of it. Now it seemed like something bad was definitely up.

David spoke up, "William, whatever it is, we can handle it together. We've been through tough times before. Now, you're one of the strongest in Accraville City. We've got Pill, Edna's making breakthroughs with potions, and my Magic Crystal weapons are coming along as long as you provide the parts. What could be so dangerous that you're this worried?"

"Yeah, with the improved formula you gave me, I've already come up with dozens of ways to make one-star Evolution Elixirs. I just need to test them. In two months tops, I can figure out how to mass-produce one-star Evolution Elixirs. Within three years, we could be cranking out one-star to four-star Evolution Elixirs. By then, we'll be unstoppable. How can you be so down now?" Edna added, frowning.

After a moment of silence, William said, "Something's happened and it's already out of my hand. I might have to leave for a while. I don't know how long—maybe a day, maybe a long time, or maybe never come back. What I'm telling you is just for the worst-case scenario. If possible, help me guard this place. Even if I never return, Michelle is a great leader. Following her won't be a loss. As for seeking refuge with Chester, that's just a last resort."

As he spoke, William pulled out a few sheets of paper from his pocket and handed them to Edna and David. "These are some potion formulas and knowledge about potions that I'm not sure about. Edna, take them back and study them. They'll definitely help you. The latter part is a hypothesis about artificial life and some rough theories. Use them as a reference, but if you succeed, don't kill innocent people to create such life. David, these are some construction diagrams of Magic Crystal weapons, as well as the shapes and external device diagrams of more advanced weapons. I don't know what the insides look like; you'll have to figure that out yourself."

Edna and David were both stunned by these sheets. They could hardly believe William knew stuff that was years or even decades ahead of current technology!

No one understood the value of these things better than these two scientific giants!

William continued, "Memorize them and then destroy them. As long as you two are the only ones who know this stuff, you'll be well-off in the apocalypse no matter what happens."

"As for me..." William looked into the distance, "Don't worry, I won't die that easily."
