Chapter 135 Second-Level Roulette
When the world lost its order, the speed of human degradation far exceeded anyone's imagination.
Caleb never thought that one day, someone would brazenly stand in front of him and demand his wife be offered.
In that moment, Caleb had the urge to rush up and snap the neck of that damn fat man, which was as thick as his head.
But the words "Evolving person" flashed in his mind, shattering his courage.
Caleb replied obediently, "If, if there's nothing else, Mr. King, I'll, I'll be going now."
Caleb could only express his opinion in this way; he didn't even dare to refuse face-to-face.
Simon commanded, "Back off!"
Simon's signature kind voice disappeared, replaced by a cold, angry shout.
A pile of photos was thrown out by Simon, scattering in the air for a moment before falling to the ground. Caleb looked down and saw that they were all photos of him and Michelle taken with a Polaroid after she found him today!
"I don't like to force people; it's too boring. Otherwise, I wouldn't have gone through you; I would have done it myself," Simon said as casually, as if he were talking about the weather. "So, here's the deal: either I force her and make you watch, then kill you both. Or, you convince your wife to spend a few nights with me, and I'll give you... a bottle of Evolution Elixir."
Caleb's trembling body suddenly stopped. After a moment, he slowly came to his senses, looking at the bottle of shimmering potion Simon had tossed on the table as if it were trash.
Evolution Elixir, a one-star Evolution Elixir, the kind of potion that granted immense power upon injection, the kind that elevated you to the privileged class!
Caleb had dreamed countless times of obtaining such a potion, but he had no way to get it. He was even willing to wash clothes and cook for an Evolving person, living a life without dignity.
Now, there was such a potion right in front of him. All he had to do was nod, and he could get it. Caleb's heart raced.
But he knew very well what the cost of obtaining this potion was. It involved many things such as dignity, character, courage, and even his soul.
Simon spoke casually, "Every day, dozens of people die in the base for the Evolution Elixir, sometimes even hundreds, but even if they die, they can't get their hands on this stuff."
Simon's voice was like the devil's temptation, luring Caleb in.
He continued, "Do you know how many Evolving persons are in the base now? Just over ten. What kind of status they hold, what rights they have, what kind of life they lead in the base, Caleb, it's crystal clear."
Simon suggested, "If you persuade your wife, you'll become one of these high-ranking Evolving persons. You'll call the shots in this base, endless supply of food, weapons, women, you name it. You might even evolve to a higher level in the future."
"Can you imagine what you'll gain then?" Simon continued his temptation. "Maybe you have concerns about things like marriage, morals, but hey, it's the apocalypse now. What's there to hesitate about? Morals mean nothing in the apocalypse, not even as much as a moldy piece of bread!"
Simon coaxed persistently, "It's just a woman, right? Once you become an Evolving person, what kind of woman can't you have? Besides, I'm only asking her to spend a few nights with me. If she truly loves you and cares for you, she would agree, wouldn't she? At worst, you can make it up to her after you become an Evolving person. What do you say?"
Simon insinuated, "Same deal stands. Say yes, everyone wins, and you win the most. Say no, and it's just you losing out, and you lose the most."
Caleb's body started trembling again, his eyes stinging but no tears falling. He shakily tried to turn and leave, but his hand reached for the table, and his soul descended into the abyss.
"You'll get it after the deed is done. For now, you can't have it," Simon said, holding the Evolution Elixir in his hand, smiling at the grim-faced Caleb.
When William left the building, no one noticed him.
Always hiding in the shadows was another rule for surviving the apocalypse.
Based on the information he had gathered and the terrain he memorized while walking around the base during the day, William accurately found the building with the secondary roulette, even in the dark.
Looking up from below, the secondary roulette on the rooftop emitted a brighter glow than the primary one, standing out in the night.
There were no guards on the rooftop, but there were sentries below, gathered in small groups chatting but not sleeping.
William checked the time; it was just past midnight. He decided to wait until the sentries grew tired before making his move.
He wasn't afraid of the guards stopping him from climbing the building; he had many ways to easily reach the rooftop. However, the light from turning the wheel was too conspicuous, and if possible, he preferred not to be noticed.
Time passed as William patiently waited. Over an hour later, the sentries began to fall asleep.
The secondary roulette was not as heavily guarded as the primary one. After all, no one could spin this level of roulette yet, so it didn't make much difference whether it was guarded or not. However, since people still didn't fully understand the roulette, they guarded it just in case.
William ghosted past the guards into the building, silently reaching the rooftop where the secondary roulette awaited him.
This was the first time in this life that William had seen a secondary roulette.
The smooth surface had ten evenly distributed sections. William glanced over it, feeling slightly disappointed. There was no Fortuitous Function Card, which meant no skills. There were no scrolls, so no recipes either.
Six slots indicated the number of Magic Crystals needed for this secondary roulette, suggesting its items were of medium value among secondary roulettes.
'Two-star Evolution Elixir, immunity potion, a gray-level armguard...'
William was mentally counting the valuable items on the roulette when his eyes caught sight of the lower left section, where a white stone was displayed. Because of the white glow from the secondary roulette, he hadn't noticed it earlier.
William's heart skipped a beat.
He recognized this stone; it was an Essence Stone.
A stone that could be embedded in weapons or equipment to add new attributes. But what made his heart race was not this feature, but another function of the stone!
