Chapter 335 Is It a Humiliating Surrender Or a Death In Battle?
Since the city walls weren't finished, everyone thought defending the place was a joke. The enemy could just sneak around and hit them from behind.
But when the Lowe Family sent over a hundred cavalry, the folks at Cloud Peak Manor were seriously regretting their choices.
If they could've picked the battlefield on or behind the city walls, at least they wouldn't have to deal with such a brutal attack.
With no clue how to handle cavalry, the Cloud Peak Manor crew had to rely on their personal skills to react. Sadly, most of their moves were wrong. This charge totally wrecked the already shaky defense line, which had been under attack by prisoners from Accraville City prison.
The warriors of Cloud Peak Manor suddenly found themselves in a bad spot, fighting on their own.
People were dying left and right; these folks had just started to feel like they belonged to Cloud Peak Manor.
Candice, Brian, Clarissa, and the others were heartbroken.
A stable, united base with high morale and combat effectiveness needed everyone to feel a strong sense of belonging.
That kind of feeling didn't just pop up overnight; it took time, constant strong stimulation, or subtle influence.
William was a great leader. He could earn the admiration of other forces for the Cloud Peak Manor crew without slowing down his own evolution.
Just like last time when Darryl brought back those spoils, when William showed them off, the whole upper echelon of Cloud Peak Manor was stunned for over a minute.
But he wasn't perfect; he couldn't do everything.
William could only give Cloud Peak Manor the strongest support in the area he was best at, or rather, the most important area in the apocalypse—military strength.
Other aspects had to be handled by other core members.
To make Cloud Peak Manor strong quickly and solidify its foundation, these core members put a lot of effort into the grassroots members. In a world where people's hearts were in turmoil, it wasn't easy to make survivors develop feelings for a force. Most teams actually used benefits to maintain mutual relationships. Although this method was cold, it was solid enough.
But Candice and Michelle had a different idea.
The apocalypse undeniably brought out the worst in people, but these folks still believed that, at the very least, they could ensure the survivors would maintain basic moral decency towards their own, like in more peaceful times.
Those who hadn't worked hard for this goal had no idea the hardships involved, but these folks never gave up. Maybe for people like Brian, Edna, and women like Candice, Michelle, and Clarissa, the concept of home was much stronger than for others.
In other words, they saw Cloud Peak Manor as their home.
Unfortunately, all their efforts to build the foundation of Cloud Peak Manor during this period were gone.
Anger was written all over the faces of many members in Cloud Peak Manor.
"When William killed my sons, did he ever expect there'd be a day like this? Your deaths today are all because of your foolish leader!" Terrence, holding a long spear with the head of a Cloud Peak Manor warrior on its tip, shouted loudly to those around him.
After William stormed Central Island and personally killed his three sons and a brother, the entire Lowe Family became mortal enemies with William.
Terrence didn't care why his sons were killed; he just wanted revenge.
Today, Terrence brought all the fighting men of the Lowe Family to completely destroy William's power base! He wanted to behead all the members of Cloud Peak Manor, making a spectacle for William!
Terrence even had an almost uncontrollable thought.
He wanted to challenge William and personally pierce William's body with countless holes.
Beside Terrence was his only remaining child, Valerie. Valerie gritted her teeth, her face grim, killing the members of Cloud Peak Manor one by one with her spear. She never forgot the vow she shouted that evening, "I will kill you!"
Maybe Valerie didn't have the strength to take down William just yet, but she figured killing his people would hurt him just as much. If she could take out some of his women, making him feel the pain of losing loved ones, that'd be even better, just like when he killed her three brothers!
With victory almost in the bag, Arthur, who had just blocked a massive Wind Blade with five summoned ghosts, laughed, "Ms. Wright, looks like we're winning. What do you think William's gonna feel when he sees your mangled bodies?"
The card kept spinning in the air. Even though the Wind Blades it shot out could hurt the ghosts, it took two to kill one. That was too slow to keep up with Arthur's summoning speed. If the Wind Blades aimed at Arthur, he'd just put a few ghosts in front of him to stay safe.
A shout came from behind. Candice glanced back and saw Clarissa getting attacked by several Lowe Family cavalry. Clarissa got a lance through her shoulder.
Even though Clarissa was a two-star Evolving person and those cavalry were only one-star, they had the advantage of being on horseback, working together skillfully, and using their traditional marksmanship. Clarissa got hit after taking down two cavalrymen.
Candice, after slashing apart a ghost, was getting more and more anxious.
At this rate, Cloud Peak Manor's members would be wiped out soon. In just a short time, especially after the Lowe Family joined the fight, Cloud Peak Manor had over a hundred casualties, and no one was unscathed. Their combat effectiveness was dropping fast.
Were they really losing the base today?
In her worry, Candice seemed to be more determined.
Even if they died today, they'd take down the enemy with them!
At this moment, whether it was Brian, Clarissa, Edna, or many others from Cloud Peak Manor, they all knew they had to fight to their death.
But at this critical moment, a discordant voice emerged, "Stop fighting, I surrender!"
Someone from Cloud Peak Manor suddenly shouted. Seeing the enemy pause, he immediately threw down his weapon and cried, "I surrender, I won't fight anymore, spare my life!"
Under the severe situation, with companions dying every moment, someone finally couldn't resist the instinct to survive and chose to surrender.
This spread like wildfire, instantly affecting many members in Cloud Peak Manor.
Many chose to do the same, throwing down their weapons and handing their doomed lives to the enemy, hoping for a fifty-fifty chance.
These individuals weren't stupid; they were very smart, understanding the situation. So they chose the latter between certain death in battle and a fifty percent chance of survival by surrendering.
The morale of Cloud Peak Manor plummeted because of these surrendering individuals.
No matter how Candice, Brian, Clarissa, and others glared at them, they would lower their heads in shame but stick to their decision.
"That's a good idea," Arthur's eyes lit up, and he stopped summoning ghosts with a smile. "Ms. Wright, if you also choose not to resist, maybe we can become friends."
Some members of Cloud Peak Manor surrendered, but naturally, some did not. These people, led by Candice, gradually gathered together. The members from Accraville City prison and the Lowe Family immediately surrounded these dozens of people.
"Surrender, or die!" Terrence, riding on his warhorse, pointed his lance diagonally, full of spirit.
Candice gave a sorrowful smile, suddenly turned to face the warriors of Cloud Peak Manor. Her heroic face was extremely serious. She raised her knife, looked at her subordinates, and loudly asked, "Between humiliating surrender and dying in battle, what do you choose?"
"Die in battle!" A chorus of loud voices came from her subordinates.
Candice, Brian, Edna, and others' eyes reddened with excitement. They knew their efforts had not been in vain. The cohesion of Cloud Peak Manor was formed in these answers.
"We will never surrender!" A roar came from outside, followed by a heavy tremor on the ground!
