Chapter 64 Corpse Ape is Injured
"Three o'clock!" Michelle shouted, her gun spitting fire as she continuously shot in the three o'clock direction.
Louis and Jack followed suit, firing in the same direction.
Together, they managed to shoot down the mutant rats swarming from that side, temporarily easing the crisis at the window.
"Over here, Candice, help me!" Ivan yelled out while he was drenched in sweat. His proud shooting skills seemed useless at this moment.
The Corpse Ape was so large that he didn't even need to aim to hit it. But there was a problem. Even when he hit it, it didn't seem to be affected at all.
Except for the sniper upstairs, whose attacks forced the Corpse Ape to protect its head and face constantly, the others' attacks, including Ivan's, were completely ineffective.
Yet, they had no choice but to continue this futile shooting. At least it slowed the Corpse Ape down. If this giant reached the building, their only option would be to retreat, which would mean the collapse of this defense line.
The surrounding mutant creatures and zombie hordes would directly threaten Owen's rear area. Forget about going to Moon Lake for treasure. Even self-preservation would be a problem.
Seeing the other three suppressing the fast-moving rat swarm, Ivan called Candice to help him. Just as he finished speaking, a grayish-white arm suddenly reached out from below the window, about to grab his hand!
It was a zombie's claw, covered in viruses. Even a small scratch could be fatal. Cutting off the hand might be useful. The person could only wait to turn into one of those monsters.
Caught off guard and in the middle of shooting, Ivan had no time to dodge. The half-bodied zombie, which had somehow crawled up there, was about to grab the police academy instructor like the Grim Reaper. At the critical moment, a hand suddenly intervened, blocking the zombie's grasp from dragging Ivan to hell.
"Candice!" Ivan's eyes turned red as he called out to her. Because of the angle, Candice couldn't pass her gun over. She could only use her near hand to block.
But Candice was also flesh. Although she managed to deflect the zombie's hand, its sharp nails still scratched her.
Candice was the most outstanding female trainee in Ivan's teaching career. He had privately invested a lot of effort in her training. Although officially they were known as a student and instructor, in reality, they were more like family.
During holidays, Candice, whose parents were not in the city, would always spend time at Ivan's place. Their bond was deep.
This bond made Ivan willing to die rather than see Candice get hurt. Candice was like his daughter!
At this moment, his heart sank to the bottom, filled with immense regret for his carelessness. Otherwise, Candice wouldn't have had to block that attack for him!
"Candice, why!" Ivan's eyes widened. He pressed his gun against the zombie's head, emptying the magazine in rage, shouting at Candice.
He was angry at Candice for being so foolish, for practically sacrificing herself for him! But to his surprise, Candice responded with a carefree laugh.
"It's okay. I won't get infected," Candice said.
"Are you kidding me? Just because you say you won't get infected doesn't mean you won't! This is no time for comforting me!" Ivan rebutted, emotionally charged, and spewed a string of expletives, not directed at Candice but at himself.
The others in the room also turned pale at the sight. Two of them were Candice's teammates, and one was her senior. They were all close, and seeing Candice's hand scratched by a zombie left them at a loss.
"Candice, come on. If you cut off that hand, there may still be hope. Being disabled is better than dying!" Michelle urgently advised, though stunningly beautiful, was decisive and more capable than many men. Otherwise, she wouldn't be a legendary figure.
Seeing Candice injured, she immediately pulled out a knife from her calf, ready to cut off Candice's hand. Although it couldn't guarantee Candice wouldn't be infected, it was worth a shot!
Candice, looking helpless, fired two shots at the approaching zombie horde, killing two zombies before saying to the others, "Tell you. I'm fine!"
"Hurry up!" Michelle yelled as she had already grabbed Candice's hand, about to cut.
Candice quickly pulled away, finally revealing the truth, "I've taken the immunity serum, so I'm fine."
Everyone was stunned. Although they knew about the existence of the roulette and its wonders, none of them had ever spun it. They didn't even have the evolution serum, let alone know about the immunity serum.
"Even if you're lying, at least make it logical. I've never heard of an immunity serum!" Ivan still thought Candice was comforting him. He shouted at her while shooting.
Candice, exasperated, suddenly punched the wall beside her. The hollow brick wall was instantly shattered, her fist going through to the other side, startling the comrades in the next room, who almost fired back.
Everyone was dumbfounded, forgetting to shoot. Only specially trained individuals could punch through such a hollow brick wall. Even if others had the strength, their fists couldn't withstand the impact, resulting in a broken hand.
The five people in the room were all former military police. In a life-or-death situation, with adrenaline pumping, they might manage such a feat, but they'd likely end up disabled.
But Candice? She pulled her fist back, only slightly scratched from the friction, with a bit of blood. Her hand was otherwise unharmed! And even more incredibly, Candice's punch seemed effortless, not even at full strength.
Punching through a wall without full strength—what kind of power was that?!
"You, you, this, Mrs. Wright," Jack stammered, unable to form a complete sentence.
"I'm already an evolved being, and I've taken the immunity serum. You don't need to worry about me," Candice explained, then pointed outside, reminding everyone they were still in battle—in their moment of distraction, they had allowed the zombie and mutant beast horde to get much closer. Although they resumed shooting, their faces were marked with shock.
Was Candice already an evolved being? And had she taken the immunity serum? Was there really something that could make one immune to the zombie virus?
They had many questions but needed to figure out where to start asking. And there were better times for questions.
Annoyed by the sniper's shots, the approaching Corpse Ape suddenly squatted down, grabbed a car from the ground, and hurled it at the sniper's position.
The distance was too short, and the Corpse Ape was too strong. The car covered the two hundred feet in an instant. As soon as the sniper managed to dodge slightly, he was hit, half of his body flattened by the car that flew in through the window. He was beyond saving.
Without the sniper's restraint, the Corpse Ape didn't need to protect its head. Gripping a steel pillar with both hands, it began charging towards the building, ready to destroy the defense line completely.
Everyone in the building felt a deep sense of despair. At the Corpse Ape's speed, the people in the building wouldn't even have a chance to retreat, let alone fight back!
At that moment, a gunshot rang out. Most of the people here were former military police and police officers, very familiar with firearms. They immediately recognized the sound of an old, obsolete Type 56 rifle.
Initially, no one paid much attention. After all, in the sudden apocalypse, finding such an old rifle wasn't surprising.
But when the shot hit the Corpse Ape's eye, many people initially just admired the shooter's accuracy. But then, the Corpse Ape, which had been unscathed until now, suddenly started bleeding profusely from its eye!
The Corpse Ape was injured!
