Chapter 115 Everyone Must Stand on Their Own
William yelled, "Action!"
With William's command, the team members positioned around the farm immediately sprang into action.
David had volunteered for this mission, and William placed him atop a tall building to report the movements of the team members and targets using binoculars. Michelle was responsible for his safety.
Upon receiving the action signal, Candice, who had been running leisurely, suddenly turned around. Behind her were about ten first-level mutant wild boars, which had been chasing her relentlessly after she took one down earlier.
Candice calmly raised her gray-level rifle, enhanced by Homogeneous Strengthening, and pulled the trigger at the mutant wild boars.
The terrifyingly powerful bullets, also enhanced, carried immense kinetic energy and directly shot into the head of one mutant wild boar, exiting through its neck. Blood splattered into the air.
The massive body of the mutant wild boar crashed heavily to the ground, sliding forward a bit due to inertia. By the time it came to a stop, it had already breathed its last.
Candice didn't even look at her successful hit and continued shooting.
Three more shots!
At this distance, facing such large targets, Candice could hit every target even while they were moving at high speed. Now, as an Evolving person, her hands were steadier, and her vision was sharper. Three shots shattered the heads of three more mutant wild boars.
Candice knew her mission. The team had patiently waited here for two days to seize the perfect opportunity when these first-level mutant wild boars hunted together. She had to complete her task to ease William's burden as much as possible.
After four shots, the mutant wild boars had already charged close. Their bristling, hard hair made them look like giant porcupines, but their sharp tusks told Candice they were not the kind of timid animals that would curl up when threatened; they were bloodthirsty mutant creatures.
With her rifle slung behind her, Candice held the Edge of the Moon in her hand. She was intensely focused, holding the blade upright in front of her, waiting for the moment to clash with the remaining six or seven wild boars.
Candice clearly remembered what William said when he was assigning tasks.
William stated, "We must keep evolving fast to stay ahead, or we're just talking about the difference between dying sooner or later."
Everyone was smart enough to understand the underlying meaning of this statement. Those who couldn't keep up with William would be eliminated.
In the week since the apocalypse began, Candice had changed. She was no longer the military police officer who saw saving lives as her duty but a woman fighting to survive. She understood that in order to live, she had to disregard her own life. At the same time, Candice had a small but real hope in her heart.
If she survived, she might still see her parents.
The mutant wild boars finally charged forward. Candice's face, full of heroic spirit and delicate features, now showed a ruthlessness and killing intent that would never have appeared in peacetime. She swung the Edge of the Moon down, and the combined power of an Evolving person along with the sharpness of the silver blade split the first wild boar in half.
With a horizontal and upward slash, she cut open another mutant wild boar's neck, causing a large amount of blood to spurt out. Its body tilted and fell to the side.
Success didn't make Candice complacent. She quickly retreated, avoiding the charges and tusk attacks of two wild boars, and leaned against a van parked by the roadside.
With a crash, a wild boar's tusk pierced the metal body of the van, forcing Candice to dodge again.
William had previously informed everyone that these mutant wild boars might have one of two abilities: tusk piercing or headbutting. Additionally, if a mutant wild boar had any obvious specialized parts, extra caution was needed around those areas.
Candice had already observed that there were no particularly unique types among these first-level mutant wild boars, so she only needed to avoid getting too close to them.
These wild boars were fearless. Seeing Candice cornered by the van, they began to attack frantically. Candice had just cut off one wild boar's tusk when another wild boar's large head came crashing in. So she had to jump in place, bending her legs as much as possible to avoid the attack.
The wild boar's head grazed her feet and collided with another wild boar, breaking both their faces.
Before she could land, another wild boar charged at her. This time, she had no way to dodge. She tried to block with her Warblade, but due to the angle, the Edge of the Moon couldn't exert its full power.
Just as she was about to get hurt, a yellow shadow suddenly leaped out from behind the car, pouncing directly on the wild boar and knocking its several-hundred-pound body to the side.
Candice landed from the air, thrusting her Warblade into the wild boar's mouth and twisting it forcefully, ending its life. She shouted, "Thanks, big yellow dog!"
Pill's sharp claws tore open the belly of the wild boar it had pounced on, then quickly jumped away to avoid the wild boar's dying counterattack. It barked at Candice to indicate it had a name and wasn't called big yellow dog.
With Pill, a mutant creature about to evolve to the second level, helping out, Candice quickly finished off all the mutant wild boars using the indestructible Edge of the Moon.
Pill picked the tenderest meat from the wild boars to eat, while Candice dug out the Magic Crystals and spoke into the walkie-talkie, "Battle over, meet at the second mission point in two minutes."
Natalie was running at full speed, with a crystalline Air Shield rotating slowly beside her.
She had to quickly find the two second-level mutant wild boars spotted at the observation point and kill them before the Air Shield's energy ran out, then head to her second mission point.
Previously, Natalie had only fought first-level mutant creatures. To be honest, with no combat experience, she could only rely on instinct.
Once the targets were identified, the team had been waiting for an opportunity for the past two days—a chance wherein the wild boars were as dispersed as possible. Only then could they gradually weaken Landon Coleman's strength.
Otherwise, even with William, they wouldn't have the power to defeat the farm owner with a group of Battle Pets.
But once the plan was in motion, every team member had to handle their own tasks independently. Each person had to eliminate as many mutant wild boars as possible to reduce the pressure on William, since he would make the final attack on Landon Coleman.
The tasks were assigned on the spot. Natalie's first task was to kill the two lone mutant wild boars.
Natalie knew she was in great danger and might even lose her life. But she wanted to try.
