Chapter 301 Teasing the Mouse King

Darius Hwang sliced a Mutated fly in half, feeling a burn in his lungs.

This was the aftermath of a brutal fight.

The battle hadn't been going on for long, but it was way more intense than anything Darius had faced in the last three months of the apocalypse.

Every second, he was swinging his blade, splattering nasty blood everywhere.

Darius knew he couldn't stop. Stopping meant dying. He had to keep pushing forward because someone behind him was collecting the Magic Crystals from the mutated animals he killed. These were his ticket to staying alive.

Since forming a small group of just over a dozen people with some friends and family, Darius had been fighting like crazy every day. But today, he realized all those previous fights were just warm-ups; today was the real deal. Yet, in his heart, Darius felt an unprecedented sense of reassurance.

He never thought he'd make it out alive from a swarm of millions of monsters, never thought he'd collect over a hundred Magic Crystals in one morning, never thought he'd wield a gray-grade machete.

In the past, he and his crew would run at the sight of more than twenty zombies, and from dawn till dusk, they'd only gather a dozen or so Magic Crystals. As for weapons, he used a steel rod as thick as a finger found in the ruins for weeks. Gray weapons? Those needed at least three bottles of one-star Evolution Elixir to trade for, but now the one in his hand only cost a single level-two Magic Crystal.

These obnoxious, nearly ubiquitous Mutated Flies, even at the lowest level, instilled both irritation and dread, often roaming in groups of dozens. Given the number and strength of Darius's team, they would always run at the sight of these creatures.

But today, these creatures seemed like a joke in front of him and his gray machete.

Darius, momentarily distracted, got grazed on the shoulder by the web of a Mutated spider. Though he managed to avoid being ensnared, a piece of his flesh was torn away, causing blood to immediately stream forth.

"Signal flags! Signal flags!" A shout came from behind, and the now bloodthirsty Darius looked up to see someone on a rooftop waving colorful flags, repeating a motion.

'Left front, diagonal thrust!' The words popped into Darius's mind. This was something everyone had to memorize before today's battle.

The whole human formation immediately moved diagonally towards their left front.

A thousand-strong team launched an attack from behind the monster ranks, and the Mutated mouse King didn't dare to slack off, leading its army of mice to charge over.

Flies, mice, mosquitoes, bedbugs—the number of these mutated creatures was insane. Before, their small size made them easy to ignore, but now, even the smallest was the size of a fist. Their overwhelming numbers would become the most haunting memory for every survivor.

Usually, they didn't need any tactics. With so many of them, they just needed to charge.

But the Mutated mouse King was super pissed because these humans were too sneaky, playing hide and seek with it.

These humans didn't dive deep into the mutated creatures. They just hovered on the edges, seizing chances to make sudden diagonal thrusts and then quickly retreating, keeping their formation fluid, attacking again, and then retreating. Each move widened the gap between them and the Mutated mouse King.

Plus, the humans at the front were always those good at close combat, while those with ranged weapons like bows, crossbows, guns, or long-range skills followed behind. Any flying mutated creatures that dared approach would encounter a relentless barrage from these individuals.

Humans never gave the mutated creatures a chance to surround them, whether on the ground or in the air.

If it were just a group of Mutated mice, the Mouse King would have caught up with these human survivors long ago. But now, the sheer number of mutated animals, which it couldn't precisely control, had become its burden. Every time it had to change its pursuit direction, the number of its kind in that area was always the highest, leading to chaos. By the time it sorted things out, the humans had moved in another direction.

This drove the Mouse King nuts!

Suddenly, the Mouse King felt a familiar yet strange powerful aura.

It jumped onto a Mutated cow, which was a bit confused by its commands, stood upright, and looked in a direction.

A human was charging straight at it! His target was actuallythe heavily guarded Mutated mouse King.

This was a clear provocation. The Mouse King took a deep breath and let out the sharpest scream at the human, as if to say, "Come on, I'll tear you apart!"

Since evolving to level four, apart from that Dragon, the Mouse King hadn't been challenged like this in a long time.

William's appearance was part of their plan, a crucial part.

No matter how tough and brave the survivors' team was, no matter how good the flag signal command was, they were ultimately too few, while the mutated creatures were too many.

In the short term, this might not be a problem, but over time, as the Evolving persons' stamina waned, as more and more mutated creatures crowded in, and as the Mouse King's group joined in, problems were bound to arise.

At this moment, someone needed to buy time before things went south, so they could reap the greatest benefits.

William's appearance served this purpose. He would distract the Mouse King and its group, even more mutated creatures.

As a four-star Evolving person, wielding the Edge of the Moon, possessing the passive attribute wellspring of endurance, and wearing Bloodstride Boots, William was almost unstoppable as he charged into the mutated creatures. With every step forward, chunks of shattered flesh flew, and behind him lay a trail of incomplete corpses.

William's speed stunned the Mouse King; it hadn't expected him to be so relentless. However, this only fueled its fighting spirit, and the massive shadow of its true form reappeared behind it.

When William was a few hundred feet away from the Mouse King, he had reached the limit of his charge. Just as the mutated creatures thought he would slow down, William suddenly became a blur, instantly appearing right in front of the Mouse King.

The Mouse King was shocked. The shadow in the air suddenly descended, merging with its true form to create a 6-foot-5 tall giant rat clad in black armor, wielding a massive steel trident.

The Mouse King's guards were its most loyal subordinates and the strongest guarantee of its current status.

The Mouse King now commanded a Level 4 Guardian and hundreds of Level 3 mutated mice!

William seemed oblivious to the overwhelming number of Mutated mice. The Knife light in his hand flashed, and Seal: Flame Blade swung out.

The level-three mutated creatures, already aware of the need to avoid harm, scattered as the Knife light appeared. Only the level-four Mutated mouse, which had consumed The Blood of Evolution, stood its ground, eyes red, not moving an inch. Behind it was the Mouse King, and it had no intention of dodging.

As the Knife light approached, a group of gray, energy-formed mice appeared in front of it, forming a semi-transparent shield.

The Knife light struck the shield, bursting into a dazzling light.

In the light, a thin white line shot rapidly towards the Mouse King.

The Mouse King shuddered, screeching as it spun the massive steel trident in its hands to protect itself.

Unbeknownst to anyone, William had already switched to a green-grade longbow! The white line was an arrow of gray grade that he had shot.

William didn't know much about archery, unable to unleash the bow's full potential. But compared to the purple Crystal Energy Magic Gun, this bow had no usage requirements, and at such close range, the arrow's accuracy wouldn't be too bad. That was enough.

William never intended to use this bow to kill a level-four entity.

The energy-formed shield and the spinning trident blocked William's attack. The two level-four Mutated mice knew it was time to counterattack. Today, they planed to join forces and eliminate this human whose evolutionary level matched their own. Perhaps after consuming him, the Mouse King would smoothly evolve to level five.

But before the energy shockwaves from the collision had dissipated, they heard several screams. When they could see clearly again, they found William retreating rapidly with a cold smile, already over 160 feet away, holding nearly ten heads of level-three Mutated mice!

The Mouse King let out a long, furious roar and chased after him like a madman.
