Chapter 93 The Witch
In his previous life, shortly after the apocalypse began, a beautiful yet bloody legend spread in many places.
A stunningly beautiful woman roamed the world with her pet. When she encountered a man she fancied, a night of passion would ensue.
But after the encounter with the beauty came the bloodshed.
These men, whom she fancied, would have their bodies cut open, their organs eaten, their blood drained, and they would eventually die in excruciating pain. They would be tortured while they were still fully conscious. Their bodies would be sewn up and placed atop tall buildings, appearing as if they were gazing into the distance.
The beautiful woman would then continue her journey with her pet, searching for her next object of affection.
This story was filled with eerie elements, and it wasn't until later that the mystery began to unravel.
What was a beautiful woman? Perhaps the beauty was real, and the woman was real, but the part of it being a person was definitely not.
It was merely a young and beautiful woman who had evolved after becoming a zombie, turning into a new type of zombie known as a witch.
Witches were the least physically altered and most human-like among all zombie mutations. In his previous life, there was news of a ninth-level witch sighting. Someone saw this mutated zombie riding a giant white snake. Her appearance was indistinguishable from a human's, with movements and expressions more vivid than those of humans.
What was even more surprising was that although many ninth-level mutated creatures could speak human language, only witches could speak with a local accent.
Moreover, high-level witches were less bloodthirsty. They would occasionally trade with humans, and their appearance made them more acceptable to survivors.
Some even suspected that when witches evolved to nine stars, some regained memories from before their mutation and lived hidden among human settlements.
Many apocalypse researchers believed that the cure for the zombie virus, which had long baffled humanity, lay within the ninth-level witches. But up until William's rebirth, he hadn't heard of any major figure of power that had gotten hold of a ninth-level witch to use for research. Because of the existence of immunity potions, humans were less interested in solving the zombie virus and more focused on evolution potion.
Although ninth-level witches gave people many fantasies, one undeniable fact was that witches were far more brutal and bloodthirsty than other types of zombies before reaching level nine!
William was having a really bad day today. He had encountered a witch!
In terms of individual strength, witches were not top-tier among mutated zombies, not even in the top three. But their overall strength was among the best. Their primary innate skill, called "Spiritual Seed," allowed them to control a mutated creature or monster.
Unlike many control-type skills, "Spiritual Seed" was a complete control skill. It made the controlled mutated creature extremely loyal without losing its original consciousness. Moreover, the pet would evolve alongside the witch, becoming extremely powerful in the end.
High-level witches were so formidable because they were not only strong themselves but also had a fiercely loyal and powerful mutated companion!
Who would have thought that in this supermarket, there would be not only a mutated High-footed spider but also a witch who could launch sneak attacks?! And the pet was an incredibly agile mutated cat!
Highly agile mutated creatures were always the hardest to deal with in the apocalypse.
William adjusted to the light and saw the beautiful witch and the white magic crystal on the forehead of the mutated black cat.
Both were level two!
William felt a bit frustrated. Although the second-level mutated cat looked small, it was much harder to deal with than the mutated High-footed spider. Adding a witch to the mix made things really tricky.
At this moment, William couldn't help but feel tempted to retreat. He didn't need to risk his life against these two. Even if he won, he would likely end up severely injured again. This time, there was no Treasure of the Sheep to heal him.
The zombies in the supermarket, hearing the commotion, were already starting to move over. The increasingly thick scent of blood in the air was making them more and more agitated.
This made William even more determined to leave.
The black cat meowed twice, its voice surprisingly similar to its sound before its mutation, but William could hear a hint of ferocity in it.
As expected, when the witch called out, the black cat immediately jumped off the shelf, quickly moving to the corpse of the mutated High-footed spider. With a few swipes of its small paws, the tough corpse was dismembered.
William was certain that this mutated cat had ambushed him earlier. It not only moved silently as fast as lightning but also had incredibly sharp claws.
Seeing the fate of the mutated High-footed spider's corpse, William felt lucky that his back hadn't been slashed open earlier.
The mutated black cat and the witch seemed to have forgotten about William's existence. One stood gracefully on the shelf, while the other devoured the spider's flesh and blood as if they hadn't been the ones to launch the ambush.
Finally, some zombies got close. At this point, no matter how quiet William was, he couldn't hide. The blood flowing from the wound on his back was like a beacon in the dark, guiding the zombies to him.
A few zombies turned the corner of the shelf and came into view. William had no choice but to act. The Edge of the Moon instantly severed their necks. The headless bodies hadn't even fallen before William pushed them into the aisle, hoping to slow down the approaching zombies.
Glancing at the still-motionless witch and her cat, William gritted his teeth and charged in the opposite direction with the Edge of the Moon.
This meow was much louder than before. The mutated black cat abandoned the mutated High-footed spider's corpse and chased after William. The witch also leaped gracefully, crossing several shelves and gradually closing in on William.
Apart from the magic crystal and grayish-white skin, that beautiful face was indistinguishable from a human's, even showing a frown.
But this didn't impress William. Instead, the sense of danger in his heart grew heavier.
This witch and her pet cat had been underestimating him all along!
Clearly, they thought of William as food at their disposal, which was why the black cat went to eat the big spider's corpse first, to prevent the life energy from dissipating over time.
This sense of being underestimated made William very uncomfortable.
Did they really look down on him that much?
William slashed at the increasing number of zombies, his face growing darker.
'This apocalypse is not like the previous one. Here, no one has the right to underestimate me!' William thought.
William's slashing motion suddenly paused. He stepped forcefully on a tall zombie, changing his direction. The Edge of the Moon swung nearly 360 degrees in the air, slashing towards the black cat that was leaping to the next shelf.
The timing and leverage of his strike were perfect, catching the black cat mid-air. William's slash was exceptionally fierce!
But it was still too far! Even with the leverage and the length of the Edge of the Moon, he was still a bit short of hitting the leaping black cat.
Initially startled by the counterattack, the black cat showed a human-like disdain in its eyes, as if mocking William's overestimation of his abilities. Its body made no reaction, only extending its claws from its pads, ready to swipe at the human who had delivered himself.
William thought to himself, 'A beast is still a beast. Today, I'll let you taste what it's like to be dismembered.'
The Edge of the Moon suddenly glowed with the Light of Full Strength!
At this critical moment, the witch suddenly let out a piercing scream, stabbing into William's eardrums. With his vision black, his movements slowed. The black cat's fur stood on end, its body twisting sharply to move a short distance away!
