Chapter 31 Kill Lizard
William and Candice were hiding at the stairs leading to the second floor of the tennis court, waiting for the perfect moment.
Candice agreed to cooperate with William, and the two of them were now temporary allies.
The task Candice needed to do was very dangerous. She had to attract the attention of two large lizards alone, leaving one for William.
As a professionally trained female police officer, Candice naturally knew what she was about to face. She also learned from William that these large lizards were second-level mutated beings. However, she still agreed to it because she was intrigued by the power they could 'offer.'
Furthermore, William promised her that if she helped with the second task, he would tell her how to survive in the apocalypse.
Candice wasn't interested in knowing survival methods, but she wanted to understand what this apocalypse really was.
She held an aluminum baseball bat in her hand and was filled with unease that couldn't be calmed.
If she hadn't seen it with her own eyes, she would never have believe that it was a baseball bat because no normal baseball bat emitted a gray light!
Even this faint gray light was barely noticeable!
She vividly remembered that the man found four or five of these baseball bats in a changing room. Initially, they were ordinary, but after he took them elsewhere and brought them back, only this one remained with a gray halo.
Candice had seen good things before. She could handle almost all firearms in the world and drive almost any vehicle. Despite her young age, she had undertaken many challenging tasks.
But she had never seen a baseball bat that gave her the feeling of being able to punch a hole through the earth just by holding it!
She looked at William, and her gaze had become incredibly complex as if she had seen a monster.
Candice realized that the power might come in many forms, and this man seemed to have more than one.
A strange thought arose in her mind; she wanted to understand and even possess these powers.
As a policewoman, Candice desired more power than ordinary people. Since she had witnessed the kind of power that diminished her original doubts, it was as if she had found a glimmer of light in the darkness that interested her.
William was not unfamiliar with the look in this woman's eyes. Many people in the apocalypse had such eyes—a thirst for evolutionary elixirs, for equipment, for weapons, and ultimately, a thirst for life.
He knew that the baseball bat he had given Candice, which had been reinforced four times by his craftsman profession, had stirred up this thirst in her. Therefore, he had no doubt that she would cooperate.
In the apocalypse, individual power might be exalted to the extreme, but many things were ultimately beyond the capabilities of individuals, especially in the early stages of the apocalypse, where teamwork played a greater role.
In William's plan, having just a female police officer for tomorrow's operation was not enough. He also needed to bring Sienna and that social media influencer to form a small group.
As for the baseball bat he had reinforced, William was not entirely sure of its level of enhancement. But it was certain that its hardness was definitely comparable to the finest steel. Most importantly, it was lightweight.
Watching Candice treasure the baseball bat in her hand, William felt a sense of superiority. If he had the right materials at hand to further enhance this bat, how excited would Candice be?
"I'm here!"
William whispered a few words as his ears twitched, and the two hidden figures and the dog immediately focused their attention, ready to strike.
Thanks to the dropped phone in the bathroom, the flashlight was still on at this moment. The light shone through the bathroom door, casting shadows snd revealing the figures of three large lizards.
Perhaps they had been unsuccessful in trying to push aside the debris covering the hole in the ceiling. After waiting for a while with no progress, the three large lizards walked out of the bathroom to the entrance of the lounge.
Even though they had just fought against three large lizards in the bathroom, seeing them again still made Candice somewhat fearful. She didn't understand where these monsters had come from.
Her gaze involuntarily swept toward the dog named Pill lying on William's other side. She got an answer in the dog, but Candice still didn't understand why Pill didn't have that white crystal on its forehead like the three lizards did and why its strength was much weaker than the three large lizards.
However, the dog was quite clever. Looking at how it was lying there now, it really resembled a well-trained police dog.
The largest of the three lizards walked out first, perhaps due to its habits before mutation, whose movements were always cautious and careful. The other two followed behind, one of them still holding a human arm in its mouth, chewing incessantly.
Candice tightened her grip on the baseball bat in her hand, emitting a hint of killing intent.
Even though the people who died in the bathroom were not good persons, they were still of the same kind. Now, seeing these mutants treating the limbs of their kind as food, Candice felt a sense of sorrow for the deceased.
Only William understood that these mutated beings didn't like humans. They couldn't obtain evolutionary elixirs from the roulette; their paths of evolution were through slaughter. By killing humans, killing their kind, killing other kinds, the higher the level of the beings they killed, the faster their evolution would also be.
These lizards were just following their instincts. They had already evolved to the second level, indicating that they had killed countless lives.
William gestured, and Candice nodded. After taking a deep breath, she swiftly dashed out toward the training area.
The commotion immediately caught the attention of the three large lizards. The leader saw the prey that had escaped earlier reappear, roaring, chasing after it. Its limbs made a creaking sound on the ground, and the high-quality floor couldn't withstand its sharp claws.
This leading lizard was the most evolved and the fastest. With a sudden burst of speed, it leaped more than 30 feet in an instant, following Candice as she turned toward the training area.
The other two lizards followed closely behind, but the leader had already run far ahead, causing them to lag behind. One ran frantically, while the other was still gnawing on the arm, showing some hesitation, unsure whether to finish the arm first or chase after it.
This moment of hesitation gave William an opportunity. He leaped out from the stairs, wielding a machete, aiming directly for the soft underbelly of the lizard.
According to the evolutionary hierarchy, William was only a One-Star Evolver, and there was a gap in strength between him and the Second-Level Mutated Lizard. However, with the enchanted white ordinary weapon in his hand and the element of surprise, he gained the upper hand. The lizard, caught off guard with something in its mouth, couldn't unleash its most powerful tongue attack and lost its advantage.
These factors combined, causing it to only manage to dodge to the side, spitting out the severed arm from its mouth.
But as the lizard just moved, a tremendous force came from its tail, grabbing hold of its body just as it swayed to the side.
Life and death often came down to a moment. Failing to dodge, it felt a chill as the gleaming white machete sliced into its throat!
