Chapter 59 Plan Ahead
The Corpse Ape was not a monster. It was a Third-Level Zombie!
William didn't know why there was a Third-Level Zombie just one day after the apocalypse.
Wasn't this evolution speed a bit too terrifying?
The evolution of zombies was different from that of humans. Humans relied on evolution potions, and they needed to spin the corresponding Doomsday Roulette to obtain these potions. It could be said that human evolution must proceed step by step.
On the other hand, zombies and other non-human life forms evolved differently. Their evolution was entirely natural. When the energy within their bodies accumulated to a certain extent, qualitative changes occurred, which was evolution.
In theory, these non-human life forms, such as zombies, could evolve to the highest level in a short period.
But this was just a theory; it was almost impossible in reality.
For example, to evolve from a regular zombie to a First-Level zombie, a zombie might only need to consume the flesh and brains of one person. Evolving into a Second-Level zombie might require ten. And to evolve from level two to level three, it might need a thousand!
This was an exponential increase.
At the beginning, zombie evolution was relatively easy, but as the levels increased, it became more and more difficult and slower.
Originally, compared to humans, these non-human life forms had an absolute advantage in evolution speed during the early stages of the apocalypse.
However, William never anticipated that within just one day, zombies would evolve to level three!
Level three!
In the past, how long it took for humans to evolve into the Third-Star level? Three weeks?
But it only took one day for this Corpse Ape? Just one day!
Damn it!
The strength of the creatures in the black hole had already weighed heavily on William's mind, and now the appearance of the Corpse Ape only intensified his strong sense of bad foreboding.
In his previous life, the most terrifying monster he had seen hadn't even appeared yet, and now, there was an additional Third-Level Zombie!
Moreover, it was a type that ranked among the top in combat power among mutated zombies: the Corpse Ape!
These zombies were immensely robust, with tough skin and thick flesh, and their eyelids had excellent defensive capabilities.
Imagine attacking a 16-foot-tall monster where only the head was vulnerable. How would humans with heights generally below 7 feet attack it?
Even after human evolution levels increased, dealing with Corpse Ape remained a daunting task.
William's concerns were not unfounded. The Corpse Ape lifted a steel pillar in its hand and slammed it against a nearby building. The tall building of over a dozen floors shook violently, and faint screams could be heard. The Corpse Ape used the other hand to directly smash through a window, grabbing a struggling man from inside.
This man was not small in stature, probably over 6 feet tall and weighing over 180 pounds.
However, he had no resistance to Corpse Ape at all. With just a light squeeze, the Third-Level Corpse Ape found a large amount of blood flowing from between the fingers, dripping onto the heads of the regular zombies below, making these monsters even more frenzied.
The Corpse Ape stuffed the man's body into its mouth. For someone like William, who had survived in the apocalypse, witnessing such a scene made his body numb and his stomach churn, causing many other survivors who saw it to collapse. The military might handle it better, but many small teams formed by ordinary people scattered and fled at the sight.
The extremely bloody visual impact exceeded the tolerance of many.
"Shit! What... what is this?" Scott's subordinate's legs trembled, a strong urge to urinate taking over all his senses. He was on the verge of wetting himself.
He was one of the earliest to follow Scott. When they initially drove a broken-down car for transportation, he and Scott, along with partners, had fought with others for business. Brawling and fighting were commonplace, and they even got into bloody fights now and then. He thought he had seen it all, and there was nothing left to fear.
But the sight of that huge monster devouring a person alive just now made him shudder to his core.
Scott was also terrifyingly stunned. He originally thought he was very powerful, not only having a group of outstanding subordinates but also being a One-Star Evolver.
However, Owen's appearance dealt him a significant blow, forcing him to cooperate with Owen here. And the appearance of this Corpse Ape made him realize completely that this apocalypse belonged to these monsters, not him or other human beings!
Equally grim-faced as Scott was Owen. He hadn't expected that just after giving a speech to boost the morale of his subordinates, a monster would disrupt his plan.
Unlike ordinary people, Owen wasn't afraid. Although this monster was terrifying, he believed in the combat abilities of his subordinates and the power of modern weapons. What concerned him more was the influence this monster had on the surrounding regular zombies.
The Corpse Ape seemed to be able to control non-evolved creatures around it, with the horde following in its footsteps.
If William were beside Owen, he would surely tell Owen that higher-level zombies exerted pressure on lower-level zombies, a pressure that, in most cases, could be converted into effective control, and zombies rarely killed each other.
In this aspect, zombies did much better than monsters.
Owen's expression was solemn. He knew the vast difference between a scattered group of zombies and an organized one. He could handle the former, but the latter...
"Order Director Thompson and the Second Battalion to guard our rear area at all costs!" Owen gritted his teeth as he commanded, "Also, instruct Thomas and the others that when necessary, they can execute the beheading plan in advance! The target is that monster!"
"Yes!" The staff officer roared and went down to relay the orders with tears.
"William..." Lucy, on the other end of the walkie-talkie, kept vomiting continuously, unable to complete a full sentence.
The scene of the Corpse Ape devouring a person just now overwhelmed her emotions, causing her to vomit uncontrollably after providing William with a few pieces of information.
There were also some unusual sounds coming from Natalie's end, indicating that she was equally uncomfortable but managing to hold it in.
William didn't blame them but instead analyzed the current situation based on their fragmented information.
He had intended to take advantage of the chaos, but in this situation, human survivors were likely to collapse in a very short time, forcing him to consider a strategic retreat.
He asked, "Lucy, where is the Monster Baby now?"
"It's still strolling by the lake." Lucy wiped her mouth, observing through binoculars and responding via the walkie-talkie.
"And where is the Dreadram?"
"He's behind the credit company building to your left front!"
William stood up, jumped out of the window on one side, and swiftly moved toward the direction of the company building, saying to Lucy, "Keep me informed of Dreadram's location at all times, and stay alert to any unusual activity. Natalie, come closer to me!"
