Chapter 224 Double Sided Killing Team!
Gemma stood smack dab in the middle of the road, staring down two dudes who were giving her the stink eye.
One of them piped up, "Move aside, and we won't have to kill ya."
They were twins, identical in every way, right down to their mirrored hairstyles – one slicked left, the other right.
Gemma had cut ties with her old crew, so she just stood there, silent as a statue, not saying a word.
The guy on the left, Ralph Anderson, shot a look at his twin, Ronald.
Ralph sneered, "Ronald, you think this ugly freak's got a screw loose?"
Ronald nodded. "Ugly chicks shouldn't be allowed to breed. Ruins the gene pool. Always figured good looks were a sign of evolution."
"Couldn't agree more," Ralph said, eyeing Gemma, his fingers twitching like he was playing an invisible piano.
He added, "I wonder who led the zombie horde here. But you're with them, so spill it. Ugly chick, which faction you reppin'?"
Gemma's face stayed blank as she leaned forward just a bit, then suddenly charged straight at Ralph.
"Overestimating yourself!" the twins said in unison. "Today, we'll show you the power of Brody's Double Sided Killing Team."
They stepped towards each other, forming a line, then split apart, multiplying into four, then eight!
"Did you think we didn't know you're a two-star Evolving person?" the eight figures said, all with the same creepy grin, like they had Gemma all figured out.
Gemma's punch landed on one of the figures, which shattered and exploded.
Caught off guard, Gemma was blown back, hitting the ground hard. Blood poured from her half-burned mouth.
"Wrong guess," the remaining seven shadows taunted, laughing at her.
"Ugly chick, don't think being a two-star Evolving person makes you top dog in the apocalypse. There's crazy stuff out there you don't even know about. Your strength wouldn't even crack the top fifty in our Zero Commerce Guild, while we're in the top twenty. Know the difference? It's like night and day! We can crush you without breaking a sweat!" the seven shadows said in unison, looking at Gemma like she was already toast.
Gemma yelled, her body coiled like a panther, then she charged again, hitting another figure on the left.
Another explosion. Even though she was ready, the shadow still messed her up. She was blown back again, and as she hit the ground, she heard her bones crack.
"You're strong, but dumb as a rock, thinking you can take us," the six shadows said, shaking their heads in unison, like flickering lights. "We're the Conjoined Shadow Buster, a gig you've never heard of. Even if you're a pro, you can't beat us. Oh, and by the way, we're two-star Evolving persons too!"
"So, compared to us, you're a joke," the six shadows sneered, stepping closer and tightening the circle around Gemma.
Gemma shook her head, got back on her feet, and glared at the six shadows with a look that could kill.
Charge!
That was her answer. With the circle smaller, she hit a figure even faster than before, but then, boom, another explosion.
Gemma hit the ground for the third time.
"Stubborn people die fast, and you're a prime example—dumb as a rock!" the remaining five shadows spat, their faces twisted in anger. They each pulled out long daggers, glinting with a sinister gray light.
"You're done for, idiot. Maybe you'll come back prettier in your next life," they taunted, closing in on Gemma, who was struggling to get up.
When they were just 16 feet away, Gemma suddenly sprang up, colliding with one of the shadows, and boom, another explosion sent her flying.
"Even though we hate you, gotta admit, your resistance is impressive. Wonder how many guys you could handle if someone taught you to be a woman," the shadows mocked.
Hearing this, Gemma, kneeling and spitting blood, her eyes blood-red, rolled towards the nearest shadow and punched its knee.
A bone-cracking sound and a scream broke the silence. For the first time, Gemma injured one of them. But a dagger was now stuck in her shoulder, piercing the bone, making it impossible to lift her arm.
Lying on the ground, clutching his knee, Ralph, with his hair parted to the left, screamed, "Impossible! How did you find my real body?"
Gemma, covered in blood and barely standing, said, "I don't need to find the real one; I'll just hit them all."
It was the most complete sentence she'd said since the fight started, sending chills down the twins' spines.
She didn't need to find the real one; she'd just hit them all!
How much guts did that take? How little did she care about her own life?
The twins knew the power of the explosions. If Gemma weren't a two-star Evolving person, she'd have been blown to bits long ago. But she was ready to be blown up six times!
For the first time since getting the Conjoined Shadow Buster gig, they felt a chill down their spines.
With Ralph injured, the other shadows vanished. The only one left standing, Ronald, showed a grim determination after a brief shock.
"So what? Even if you break through our skills, I can still kill you!" Ronald roared, charging forward, closing the gap in an instant. His dagger aimed right at Gemma's neck.
Both Ronald, the attacker, and Ralph, the observer, were sure this strike would land.
Just as the dagger was about to pierce her, Gemma moved slightly back. The dagger missed its mark and pierced her shoulder blade instead.
Blood sprayed all over Ronald's head and face. Then, he felt a sharp pain in his gut and saw Gemma's hand stabbing into his stomach.
"I don't need to be stronger than you. I just need to be more ruthless," Gemma said coldly, watching Ronald's life fade away. "And has anyone ever told you that you talk too much?"
