Chapter 144 Shameless
"Okay, then I'll tell you," said Richard, placing the broken shell fragment in the sunlight. "As you can see, this piece can reveal the image of an entire river mussel.
"On the mussel's shell, there are rings of patterns that indicate its age.
"When it's born, its shell is gray, but every year, a red ring appears on it. Every ten years, an orange ring appears. After a hundred years, a golden ring appears, followed by a green ring after a thousand years and a purple ring after ten thousand years.
"This mussel has seven purple rings, indicating it's over seventy thousand years old, and seven green rings, indicating another seven thousand years old. The gold, orange, and red rings represent ages under a hundred years, but there are too many patterns to count with the naked eye. I can only estimate its age based on the purple and green rings, which means it's lived for over seventy-seven thousand years."
Seventy-seven thousand years?
Hailey exclaimed in amazement. "My goodness, it must be very valuable with such a long history."
"Money is nothing," Richard remarked, "Can it buy eternal youth? This is a Five-colored Mussel, a holy and auspicious object representing the five blessings. With its presence, one can attain longevity, prosperity, serenity, virtue, and a peaceful end.
"In fact, not only does it have beautiful symbolism, but it can also ward off evil and disaster. Eating its flesh can promote longevity, treat illnesses, and heal injuries. Grinding its shell into powder and consuming it can preserve youthfulness and prevent aging and death."
Everyone was shocked by this explanation, including Ivy.
When they were in the small hotel, Richard didn't mention that the Five-colored Mussel symbolized the five blessings. Did he forget to mention it?
But upon reflection, that couldn't be right. Richard had told her before that this mussel was called the Five-colored Pearl Mussel, and now he had omitted the word 'pearl,' calling it the Five-colored Mussel instead.
It was obvious that Richard had intentionally left out the word 'pearl' so that no one would know that this was a pearl mussel with a Magic Pearl inside.
And the so-called symbol of the five blessings was probably made up by Richard to divert people's attention and better protect the Magic Pearl inside Ivy's body.
After hearing about its value, Mrs. Ashford walked up excitedly. "Richard, are you saying that my mussel shell fragment has the power of eternal youth and youth preservation?"
In other words, this priceless mussel shell fragment still belonged to Mrs. Ashford.
Is this your mussel shell, Mrs. Ashford? Richard asked with a stern face.
"Of course it is," Mrs. Ashford chuckled. "Didn't I personally give it to you for appraisal?"
She reached out her hand and said, "Give it back to me."
But Richard didn't return it to Mrs. Ashford. "Didn't you say earlier that this mussel shell fragment belonged to a rural girl and that you wouldn't take it even if it was given to you?"
"Oh, that was just a joke. Don't take it seriously. How could a rural girl have such a valuable treasure? The truth is, this mussel shell fragment is a family heirloom of the Ashford family."
"Yes, that's right. It's a family heirloom of the Ashford family," Hailey added, nodding in agreement.
Everyone looked at Mrs. Ashford and Hailey with disdain, thinking they had never seen such shameless people before.
Alexander walked up with a cold face. "Grandma, this mussel shell fragment doesn't belong to you. It belongs to Ivy. She only gave it to my family doctor for testing, and she didn't say she would give it to you."
Mrs. Ashford glared at Alexander fiercely. "What are you talking about? Ivy is an orphan with no parents and is as poor as a church mouse. How could she have such a valuable treasure?"
