Chapter 43 Aftershocks

Dozens of people formed a line and searched from one end of the river to the other.

The Missouri River is not long, but one end leads to the river. If Ivy was washed into the river, her fate would be uncertain.

As it grew dark, Alexander and his team searched back and forth along the entire length of the river two or three times, but still found nothing. Maria couldn't help but worry.

"Can't we go search for Mommy in the river?" asked their sixth daughter tearfully.

"No, the water in the river is too deep. Even someone with good swimming skills wouldn't have a chance of survival if they fell into it," Maria patiently advised her children. "Let Uncle's rest now. Mommy has gone to heaven already; don't let Uncle's make any unnecessary sacrifices."

"Mummy..." The six children soon burst into tears again.

Ethan stepped onto muddy ground by the riverside and shouted loudly: "Mr. Ashford! You should come ashore quickly! Ivy has been washed away by water; there is no possibility that she survived anymore! Please come back quickly so that you won’t let Madam worry about you..."

Washed away? Alexander popped his head out of water and waved at his bodyguards: "Go find her!"

Upon hearing this, Ethan became anxious immediately.

"Mr. Ashford, it is too deep for you to go there yourself? I beg you to come ashore quickly! Do you want The Ashford Family lineage ends with your generation?"

"Do you care about The Ashford Family when risking your own safety to save others? Don’t call Madam right now!" Alexander ordered coldly as he swam towards shore.

"If you come ashore first then I won’t call." Ethan persisted stubbornly because he knew very well that once something happened to Alexander, he would not have a good life either. Therefore, he would never let his master continue to take risks.

Maria was worried about the safety of Alexander and his bodyguards and immediately persuaded them to come ashore with her children.

"Mr. Ashford, please come ashore quickly! Ivy... " Maria choked up halfway through her words and burst into tears.

The eldest daughter cried: "Uncle, please come ashore and let all the bodyguard uncles come ashore too. Mommy... Mommy has gone; she will be fine in heaven..."

"Don't you want me to save Mommy?" Alexander looked conflicted.

In fact, they had been searching for so long without finding Ivy that he had lost confidence. But still hoping for a miracle that maybe if they searched again, Ivy might appear even if it was just her corpse so that he could retrieve it for their children.

"Mummy is important but Uncle is also important..." The eldest daughter cried: "Our father died; our mother died too. You are the only one who treats us well. We don’t want anything bad happening to you either so please go ashore."

Alexander's face became solemn as he came ashore followed by his bodyguards.

Several people returned to the village entrance but were unwilling to leave like this.

Bubbles began rising from the river again causing on-duty personnel panic-strickenly shouting: "Aftershocks are coming! Everyone run!"

For the sake of their children's safety, Alexander had no choice but to lead them away from danger immediately.

Everyone thought Ivy was dead at this point but at this moment she was struggling hard against a powerful vortex at the bottom of the river.
She was spun around by this vortex until she reached the bottom of the river where there remained no water around her allowing her free breathing space yet unable escape from within its circle despite how much she struggled. There was a huge black hole at the deepest part of the riverbed, pitch-black and nothing could be seen inside it. Ivy was trapped in this vortex within the black hole and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't escape from it.
