Chapter 49: Snatching the Pearl from the River Clam
Compared to the size of the river clam, this pearl was not particularly large. However, it was exceptionally round and bright, even emitting a glow in the darkness of night.
Even Ivy, who knew little about valuable items, could tell that this pearl was an invaluable treasure.
She wondered how old this river clam must be? Living in the dark abyss at the bottom of the river without any disturbance from humans for hundreds or possibly thousands of years due to its size and longevity.
Suddenly, Ivy had a fantastic idea - what if this river clam had become sentient?
She wanted to take that pearl but worried about offending or angering the clam. What if it became sentient and retaliated by eating her?
After much consideration, Ivy decided that greediness would only lead to trouble. Besides, she had already held her breath underwater for too long and needed air soon.
As she turned around to leave, she heard her second daughter's voice echoing in her mind:
"Mummy! Fifth sister told me she wants to go into the river and catch pearls!"
Catch pearls!
Fifth sister loved pearls more than anything else in life; now there were some right before them. Since they saw them anyway why miss out on such an opportunity?
Ivy immediately turned back towards where she found that pearl near the clam's body.
She wanted to get hold of it as a gift for fifth daughter!
It wasn't every day one took such risks diving into rivers; she might as well bring something back home as a souvenir for her daughters.
Ivy swam over quietly beside where that clam lay still with no unusual movements detected. She grabbed onto that precious pearl tightly while hoping not to offend or anger anyone down there especially since clams may have become sentient beings after all these years living alone under water.
Finally getting hold of it made Ivy feel relieved until suddenly, the clam closed its shell.
In that instant, a powerful current swept Ivy out of the black hole and into open water.
"Wow! That was easy," she thought to herself as she steadied her body and swam towards the surface.
The clam seemed angry now; it moved its massive body quickly through the water, chasing after Ivy relentlessly. Its size allowed it to glide through water much faster than Ivy could swim.
Once it caught up with her, it opened its shell wide before closing in on her again. It had made up its mind to trap Ivy inside itself!
Damn! This river clam had indeed become sentient; it wanted to eat her!
Ivy felt terrified but used all her strength to fight back against this creature determined not to be trapped inside forever. The interior of the clam's body was spacious enough for Ivy to move around freely while still being able to breathe despite an unpleasant odor filling every inch of space within.
However, if she didn't escape soon enough, then there would be no air left due to how tightly shut this clam kept itself sealed off from everything outside except for what entered via mouth or gills - which meant anything entering would trigger intense irritation causing layers upon layers of pearl secretion until eventually becoming encased entirely by them like some kind of human-shaped pearl statue!
How could she open this shell? After thinking about various options available at hand without any success so far in finding one that worked best under these circumstances where time was running out fast-ivy decided on a bold plan: She put that glowing pearl into her mouth before using both hands forcefully tearing apart flesh hope that pain might make clams feel something and forced it open the shell.
