Chapter 101

HANNAH

I shoved the rest of my books into my bag and yanked the zipper closed, my head throbbing.

It had been a bad day, right from the moment I opened my eyes to when I had met Edward. I didn't think my day could get more messed up than this. When I remembered what had happened with Edward in the library, I shut my eyes.

I felt upset and embarrassed all over again. In his defense, he had apologized for the almost kiss.

That was what he had called it.

Lycans were easily possessive and obsessive, with an inclination to form quick attachments to others they liked. Everyone knew that, but I had not expected it to have happened so fast. I mean, who tried to kiss a girl he met barely thirty minutes ago? That was crazy.

The good thing was no one was going to know about it.

I was one of the last out of the classroom. Willa was supposed to have met me in class so we could go home together.

As I walked down the hallway, looking around for her, I noticed nearly everyone was staring at me. Not surprising since I had been the only girl to be singled out by the prince. I reshouldered my backpack and kept walking, looking straight ahead to blot out their faces.

"I heard the prince kissed her."

I froze, and turned.

The speaker was Lydia. She didn't bother masking the fact that she had just said that about me. I saw the hopeful light in her eyes. She wanted me to react, to say something more that would give her more to gossip about. I wouldn’t fall for her trick.

I kept walking, faster this time, but I still heard all the others whispering.

"They were making out in the library."

"They were in there for hours."

"No! Ten minutes."

"What a slut!" one of Julia's friends hissed, not bothering to lower her voice. "First it was Asher. Then it was the Wallace brothers. Now it's the prince she's after. Who knows who's next?"

"Maybe the king," someone else said with a laugh. “She’s so desperate for attention that she would do anything. Instead of focusing on her weak wolf, she’s jumping from one dude to another.”

Inside, I burned, but I didn't let my face show that fact. I wouldn’t let them get to me; that would only make things worse. No reaction would be better.

But who had spread the lie that I had kissed Edward? How could anyone even have known what had happened in the library?

Edward and I had been surrounded by shelves. No one had been close to us, not even his guards.

I groaned as I thought of my mate's reactions. If they hadn't heard of it yet, they soon would. Their reactions wouldn't be pretty.

"Hey Hannah!"

I stiffened, then relaxed when I saw it was Willa, running to catch up with me. I knew she would have questions, and frankly, I didn’t think I had answers to them.

"What's this I'm hearing all over school?" She asked when we were walking side by side. "Did you—" She sunk her voice as we passed a group of hissing girls. "Kiss the prince?"

"Ugh. Of course not. Do you seriously think I would do something like that? He tried to kiss me in the library. I didn't let it happen." I told her. “I don’t understand who will spread such nasty gossip.”

Willa heaved a sigh of relief. She slipped her arm through mine. "I knew you really couldn't do something like that. But you should hear the versions of the story flying around. I’m sure it’s Julia trying to get back at us.”

I could imagine quite a few. Maybe Julia and her crew would get creative and try to convince everyone that the prince and I had taken our clothes off as we kissed.

Willa sighed again. "Anyway, bad news. Cade has been looking for you. He heard the rumors, so I guess the others have too. He's pissed as hell. I couldn't even get him to calm down."

"It's okay. I'll explain to him that nothing happened."

Willa and I ignored the rest of the school together as we walked out of the building and to the parking lot. Cade, Jace, and Chase were standing beside the car, waiting.

I took one look at them and knew they were beyond pissed. It was in the stiffness of their posture, the way they held their heads, the way they glared at everybody who wisely avoided them, and then at me.

"Uh-oh. Doesn't look good," Willa whispered. “I told you they’re pissed.”

"I know," I whispered back.

When I got close enough, I turned to Cade, who was closer to me and also looked like he was the angriest. "Cade. I promise whatever you heard is not-"

He raised a hand, palm up. His eyes were like chips of ice. "Whatever you have to say, save it. I don't want to hear it."
