Chapter 238

WILLA

I didn't remember much of the long walk to my dorm room. I just let my feet take me through the almost familiar paths.

Once or twice I almost got lost but I managed to find my way back again. I bumped into people. People bumped into me. I guess I muttered a few apologies.

I got a lot of strange looks but I didn't really care. I felt hollow inside.

I didn't remember a single thing from the wolfing ritual I was just coming back from. I hadn't listened to a word being said.

All I had wanted was Lucien and for the shortest two minutes in my life, he had wanted me too. The evidence was in the way he had touched me. The way he had kissed me like nothing else mattered.

Lucian had felt exactly what I felt. I was sure of it. Why then was he still so hellbent on rejecting me?

Now I wished the kiss hadn't happened. It was an amazing, heart stopping experience but what good was it when it wasn't likely to ever happen again?

Lucian's parting words about me shamelessly throwing myself at him still stung.

I dabbed at the corners of my eyes, reflecting ruefully that I had done a lot of crying in Worchmount than I done in the past year.

From the other side of the door, I could hear my roommates talking animatedly.

I entered the room, said 'hi' though I didn't really expect anyone to answer. They didn't.

Lisa and Carmen were making their beds, fluffing up their pillows. Laura lay in bed, flipping through the pages of a glossy magazine.

I shuffled over to my bed, intending to just lie down, sleep off and forget the world for a while.

"Stop right there!" Naomi ordered.

In some surprise I turned, saw that her remark had been directed at me. The others looked up in interest. Naomi looked puzzled, then angry.

"What is this about?" I asked sharply.

I was really not in the mood to put up with their bullshit tonight. It had been a really shitty day.

Naomi didn't answer. She got out of bed, marched up to me and did the oddest thing.

She sniffed my hair, my clothes, the nape of my neck. I recoiled.

"What in heaven's name do you think you're-" I began.

"Why do you have Lucian's scent on you?" she almost shouted.

For a moment I didn't know what she was talking about. Then the dime dropped.

The kiss.

Of course Lucian had left his scent all over me after that. Even for a moment there, I had been pretty sure he had been about to mark me.

Crap! I probably should have found a way to take a shower or put on an extra layer of perfume maybe.

I forced myself to meet Naomi's stare.

"Why do you smell like my boyfriend?" she said. She was shouting now. The other two had left their beds. They were now standing on either side of Naomi. "What the hell have you been doing with him? Answer me!"

My brain was too slow to think up a convincing lie so I said the first thing that came to my head. "I- I don't know. I must have brushed past him on my way here."

"Brushed past him?" She thrust her hair forward, sniffed deeply. "For Pete's sake you reek of Lucian. You wouldn't if you had just brushed past him as you said. I'm warning you, Willa-"

"He supervised the wolfing ritual," I blurted out.

"Oh. That must be it then," Carmen said with an audible sigh of relief. "Lucian always supervises that. He was probably one of her instructors. That's how she got his scent all over her."

Lisa laughed. "Seriously, Naomi, what were you thinking? That Lucian would what... kiss her? Hold her? Actually touch her?"

She gave a shudder of disgust.

Naomi thought about it and burst into laughter. She dismissed me with a flick of her fingers, sashayed all the way to her bed with the others on her heels.

"You're right," she said. "I guess I just let my imagination run away with me for a moment there."

"Even in anyone's wildest imagination, Lucian wouldn't be caught dead with someone like her," Carmen said. "I mean the guy's got class."

"Sure he does," agreed Lisa.

Their words hurt terribly. It was like rubbing salt on an open wound. They were saying all I had been thinking since meeting Lucian. Somehow it felt worse hearing it out loud.

"Speaking of class..." Noami resumed as she sprawled on her bed.

She didn't continue until the other two, like moths drawn to a flame, went closer to hear her better.

"You wouldn't believe what Lucian got me this week," she said.
