Chapter 052

HANNAH'S POV

I felt a little heat on my face. Slowly, I opened my eyes and immediately squinted as the ray of sunlight coming in through the open window hit my eyes. I was lying in an unfamiliar room that was certainly not mine and- I felt my heart speed up at this thought- not the room I had been given at Asher's place.

I frowned, and tasked my brain to remember what had happened to me. The last thing I could remember was the good Samaritan who had dropped me off at Icestone pack when I had been in so much pain that I had felt I would die the very next second.

I took in a deep breath, looked around and nearly gave a yelp of surprise but I was too exhausted to do so. Sitting on a chair right beside the bed on which I lay, but sleeping, was Jace. He looked tired, and strained.

"Jace," I murmured but he didn’t move. And then more loudly, "Jace."

Those blue eyes opened. They were unfocused for just one moment before awareness leaped into them. The next moment, he sprang to his feet and was calling my name.

"Oh my goodness! Hannah! I can't- I can't believe this. You're awake?" He bent to gently touch my arm and then my face as though to reassure himself that I was real. I knew that feeling all too well. This didn't seem real at all because hadn't I been poisoned with wolfsbane? How was I still alive after that?

"You're really awake and okay," Jace said with not a question in his voice this time. “You’re alive!”

"Yes," I said and a tear slipped down my cheek. “I’m alive.”

"It's okay. You're okay now." He came to sit beside me. With one hand, he stroked my hair. With the other, he pulled out his phone from his pocket and explained to me that he was texting his brothers to let them know that I was now conscious.

Soon, Chase and Cade rushed into the room. They were closely followed by Willa and my mother who were both teary. I was surrounded by them all. My hair was patted. My hands were held. I was hugged, beamed at, as everyone told me how happy they were to see I was alive.

"Can you sit up, honey?" my mother asked when she finally had the chance to speak.

I nodded and slowly did so. Oddly, I didn't feel weak at all. In fact, I felt unusually strong for someone who almost died. The hands that had been poised to support me if I could raise my body fell back as I sat up myself.

My mother gave a sob of relief and pulled me into another hug.

"I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you," she cried, her tears dripping down my neck. "I promise I'll never let you anywhere close to Alpha Dawson no matter what."

"It's okay, mum. It's not your fault. It was really my choice to go back there."

My reassurance made her sobs taper off. She pulled away, but still held my hand in both of hers.

I asked the question that had been burning inside me from the moment I opened my eyes. "How long have I been... unconscious?"

"About a week now," Chase answered promptly.

"Although you did wake up for a few minutes to throw up," Cade smiled. "A few minutes and then you became unconscious again. It’s been a really rough week.”

"I- I can't remember that at all," I said after a few second's reflection. "A week... I can't believe I was out for that long."

"We couldn't either," my mother said. "It's been torture waiting for you to wake up. I thought I’d lost you. I'm so happy you're fine now. You're fine now, aren't you?"

"Yeah. Do you feel okay or any kind of way?" Willa asked, drawing closer to the bed.

"I'm fine... At least, I think so."

Again, my mother hugged me. "Don't worry, dear. You've survived this. We will figure out how to deal with other problems later."

Instantly, my eyes pricked up. Did I have some sort of disease now? A terminal one?

"What other problems?" I asked quickly. "What's going on?"

My mother, biting her lip, looked at Cade. She shook her head. "It's nothing, Hannah. Nothing. It was just a slip of tongue. Just lie back down and er- focus on getting your strength back. Do you want something to drink?"

Her attempt at trying to draw the conversation to other channels fuelled my suspicions that something was very wrong.

"Mum. Everyone. What's wrong with me? Am I still going to die? Is that it?"

"Someone say something," I insisted. “Why is no one saying anything to me?"
