Chapter 313
WILLA
I drummed my fingers on the table impatiently. "It's a simple enough question. Yes. Or no."
Lucian, pushing his chair away from the table, abruptly got to his feet like it had gotten too hot to hold him.
"It's complicated," he said under his breath.
There was that word again. Complicated! A mask Lucian would be content to hide behind for the rest of his days.
I wasn't going to let him wiggle his way out of this one this time.
"It doesn't have to be complicated," I told him. "Know what I think? I think deep down you already know what your answer is. You want me just as your plaything. You want me to dump Theron for you. Yet you won't commit."
Theron made an impatient gesture. "Commitment. Love. Relationship. Those are just empty words people hide behind. Who cares about all that? All I know is what you and I shared in camp was real. Willa, why don't we explore that... have a good time. I don't want to get into a-" He swallowed. "-relationship because trust me, I'm not capable of being the kind of guy you want."
I arched a brow. "I see. So it's now about what you want. Not what I want." I motioned him to silence when he started to speak again. "You know what? I'll stick with Theron. At least his feelings for me aren't-" I made quotation marks with my fingers in the air. "-complicated."
A hint of the anger I saw at the cafeteria jumped into Lucian's eyes. He turned on his heel and left.
I leaned back in my chair, feeling deflated. I opened the book and tried to go back to reading.
It was useless. The words got blurred and jumbled up together.
All I could think about was Lucian's question. What are we doing?
Even I couldn't tell. It was all so confusing.
One moment Lucian was kissing me passionately. The next moment he was distant. The very next he was jealous.
And then there was Theron. I didn't know if our playing pretend had evolved into something more for him.
I pushed to my feet and paced the aisle between shelves, thinking.
Later that evening almost as soon as I got into my dorm room, I got a text from Lucian.
Meet me by the old oak tree close to the lake. 9p.m, it read.
That was Lucian for you. No greeting. No explanation. No nothing.
Just a curt order to meet up.
I read the message again, hating the way my heart raced. I asked myself what he could want now.
To talk? To patch things between us? To ask me to choose between him and Theron? What?
I could ignore the message, pretend I was too busy. Maybe even text him now to tell him that he couldn't just order me around, Lycan Prince or not.
Just as I had admitted to myself that I would have to go since I was curious about why he wanted to meet, the door opened.
Naomi followed by Lisa and Carmen walked in. I was a little surprised.
It was the first time I was seeing them since I had gotten back from camp. The girls didn't look my way.
Naomi went straight to her wardrobe, brought out couple of suitcases out and started packing. Her friends hung around, watching her.
It looked to me like she was changing rooms.
"Girls," Naomi said, snapping her fingers. "My makeup things?"
At once Lisa and Carmen started going through Naomi's many drawers, getting out her make-up stuff.
"Best to leave the room for the school's slut to bring in more boys," Carmen said in a loud whisper.
"You can say that again," Naomi said with a toss of her head.
I said nothing, just sat in my corner and watched them pack. I decided they could talk and gossip all they wanted.
Words couldn't do anything to me anyway.
Because of her parent's rank, it looked like Naomi could switch rooms whenever she felt like it. Good riddance!
Naomi threw in the last of her stuff into one of the suitcases, yanked the zipper closed, planted her hands on her hips and whirled around to face me.
"You must feel like you're on top of the world," she hissed.
I pretended to look surprised.
"Why should I?" I said.
"You don't know anything about Lucian!" she said. "He's a playboy. Can never settle with a woman for long. Clinging to him like a leech won't get you anywhere. You'll only end up getting your heart broken like all the others before you."
"I did not ask for your advice," I said coldly.
"Then suit yourself," she shot back.
She grabbed her suitcases and flounced out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
