Chapter 145

HANNAH

I spotted Mia's favourite pink sweater and waved. She smiled. She had seen me and started hurrying over.

I had been waiting for a while for her to arrive. My mates were not too far away, in the car that had brought us here, waiting to take me home as soon as I was done talking to Mia.

"Thank you for coming so quickly," I told Mia when she was close enough.

I called her and told her to meet me. Without asking any questions, she had said she would come immediately, which was a relief. I didn't feel like explaining anything to her over the phone because of how bad I felt, although the drive here had calmed me down a little.

"No problem," she said. "You sounded urgent on the phone. What's up?" Her eyes scanned my face. "You don't look so good if you don't mind me saying. Did something happen?"

With a sigh, I raked my fingers through my messy hair. I had barely been able to secure it with a hair tie before rushing out of the house.

"A lot happened," I said. "Willa was poisoned this afternoon."

Mia's mouth fell open, then snapped shut.

"What?" she shrieked. "What happened? Is she-"

"She's alive. The doctor said she'll be okay."

Mia blew out a breath. "But—but how..."

"That's what I'm yet to figure out. All I know is she ate almost a box full of poisoned chocolates. How it got poisoned... where and why is what we still don't know."

The corners of Mia's lips turned down in a frown. "I'm so sorry this happened, Hannah. I can't tell you how shocked I am. Who would want to even poison Willa? Even though she didn't really like me, I know she is a very nice person. I would have thought she didn't have an enemy in the world."

"Those are exactly my thoughts," I said with a sigh. "Willa is harmless. I'm trying to figure out who is behind this. Someone must really want her out of the way for a while for some reason. When I went with the others to see the Lycan queen, was Willa acting strange? Did she say anything out of the ordinary in class?"

Mia thought for a moment. "No. We didn't sit together. Most of the time I was reading, but I noticed she was on her phone a lot."

"Did anyone talk with her?"

"No. Not that I can remember." And when I couldn't think of any other question, she added, "Sorry I couldn't be of more help."

"No, it's okay," I said. "Thank you again."

"If I think of anything, anything at all that could help, I'll text you," she said.

"No. I think it would be better if we met instead. It's possible my phone has been bugged or something. I wouldn't want to underestimate whoever is behind this."

She nodded. "Take care, Hannah."

I returned to my mates after saying goodbye to Mia.

"Anything?" Jace asked, forcing the words out.

"No. Mia didn't see or hear anything," I told them. "She just noticed Willa was on her phone a lot, which isn't strange. Most times she's practically glued to her phone."

"Which brings us right back to where we started," Chase said, gesturing for me to go into the car. "Come on. Let's get back. Maybe Dad would have found out something. My god! If I get my hands on whoever did this..."

Cade didn't move. He looked thoughtful.

"Do you know Willa's password?" he asked me.

"I do," I said. "Why?"

He thrust his hand into his pocket and brought out Willa's phone with its bright pink case. "Mia said she was on her phone a lot, didn't she? Maybe we could find something in it, a clue..."

"That's a good idea," I said at once, wondering why I had not thought of that in the first place. It was probably because my brain was clogged with worry.

I took the phone from Cade. As I quickly typed in the password, my mates gathered around. The first place I checked was her text messages. Nothing suspicious there, mostly just conversations about the Ice Stone Ball.

Would that still be holding after all this? I wondered.

If someone could infiltrate the house to poison Willa, then surely they could sneak into the ball too.

But was the chocolate poisoned before or after she arrived home? I couldn't tell.

After speaking with Edward, I didn't get a chance to meet Willa because his mother had forced me into her car, driving me back home for the meeting.

I checked Willa's call logs. Nothing suspicious there either. I checked every possible place on her phone but nothing.

Finally, I checked her note app.

There was an entry. The time stamp showed Willa had written it just a couple of hours before she had been poisoned.

But it wasn't the time that made my eyes widen.

It was the title.

THINGS TO TELL HANNAH

I scrolled down. There were two items on the list.

1\. Original pack: Silvershade pack.

2\. Dated: Maxwell Parker.

"What does this mean?" I heard Chase say, and the others shook their heads.

Something told me this was important.

But what did Willa want to tell me 2 hours before she was poisoned?
