Chapter 072

HANNAH

"It is obvious that you will say anything to let this thing off the hook," Alpha Dawson said, glaring at me.

Maybe he thought I would fold up and look away. I didn't.

I looked him right in the eye and said slowly, "Julia is the criminal here. In school, she attacked and tried to kill me." I turned to Asher. "He did, too. They planned it together."

"Lies!" Lucius yelled. "All lies! I will not stand here and listen to any more from this girl. My daughter almost died! She's in the clinic right now getting stitches. Hannah must be punished for her crimes. I'm not here leaving without Hannah. She will be dragged back to the pack and then- and then..."

His eyes lit up with the possibilities of what he would like to do to me.

One step brought him close enough for his hand to brush against me. Cade smoothly stepped between us.

"Take another step near her, and I'll rip your arms off," Cade threatened. "Go on. Give me a fucking excuse. I've been itching to take something apart. I'd love to start with you."

Lucius stumbled backwards, back to the side of his Alpha, like a whipped dog. They were terrified of the triplets, and I loved it.

After a moment's tense silence, Alpha Asher said, "I think there is no need for violence."

Asher's eyes bugged out in surprise. Obviously, this had not been part of their plan.

"Dad-" he said.

His father held up his hand, cutting him off. He looked at me, and his face twisted into a fake smile. "Well, Hannah, you are lucky that no one was critically injured. The doctors say Julia will pull through. There is nothing more to be said then. I will take my leave now."

Alpha Wallace nodded. Alpha Dawson was almost at the door when he found Lucius and Asher weren't behind him. He beckoned impatiently to them.

Reluctantly, they followed him. For a second, Alpha Dawson's cold eyes fell on me. Something evil flickered in their depths, and then he was gone.

I sighed. My tense shoulders relaxed. Alpha Wallace waved me into a chair. Cade sat beside me and took my hand.

"That bastard!" Cade muttered. "What did he think was going to happen? That we would give Hannah up to him? Just like that?"

"He had to try something," his father pointed out. "Hannah, do you need more bodyguards? I can arrange for any number you want."

"No, Alpha," I said. "I can take care of myself." I smiled at Cade. "Besides, I also have Cade, Jace, and Chase to look out for me."

"I know that." There was something in the Alpha's voice that made me look up at him sharply.

He had been completely in control when our unwanted visitors had shown up. Now, he looked worried.

"I know Dawson very well," he said. "If he had remained here yelling and demanding for you to go with them, I wouldn't have bothered. But the way he left... it was just too smooth. I can tell that there are a lot of things going on in that snakepit he calls a mind."

"What can he do?" Cade said with a scoff.

Alpha Wallace's eyes darted to Cade. "It would be foolish to underestimate him, son. Dawson plots and schemes. Unfortunately, he is good at it. It is now up to us to stop whatever plan he hatches from happening because, trust me, he will find a way to hurt Hannah."

Cade's hand around mine tightened. Could he hear my beating faster than normal?

I remembered the look in Alpha Dawson's eyes just before he left, and I knew Cade's father was right. He wouldn't let this go.

I wouldn't really have been scared if it had been Asher, but his father...

"Then let's do something now!" Cade said, springing up and beginning to pace. He stopped abruptly. "How about we hire private investigators? Or we pay someone to spy on Dawson? That way, we can be two steps ahead of him."

Alpha Wallace shook his head as he slowly stroked his beard.

"Why not?" Cade asked.

"For the simple reason that it is risky," his father replied. "Having someone spy on Dawson can easily backfire. What if Dawson found or somehow bought over our spies? Don't shake your head, Cade. He can buy them over with money or threats. I've heard he can be very... persuasive when he tortures people. So you see, we cannot rely on the information from untrusted men. Hannah."

"Yes, Alpha."

"I guess it's mostly up to you now. We'll do our best to protect you, but now more than ever, you have to take your training more seriously. That way, if anything else happens, you'll be ready."
