Chapter 118

HANNAH

Blood sprayed across the windshield, the dashboard…my face. My screams were only drowned out by Jace yelling at me to get down. But I couldn't.

I was frozen, wide-eyed, terrified, my mind trying to make sense of what had just happened. Jace grabbed me roughly and pulled me down with him so we were both crouching on the floor of the car. The street was split with cries, yells, and gunshots.

Jace grabbed both my shaky hands in one of his. With the other, he tore his phone out of his pocket. His fingers flew over the screen and then he was yelling into it, "Cade, Chase or whoever the hell this is, get down here fast! We're under attack. The guard has been shot!"

There was a pause before he reeled off our location.

The phone went back into his pocket. Jace raised his head a little, barked out an order for the driver to step on the gas. He did.

The movement caused the body of the dead man in the other seat to slump forward and sideways. I bit down on my knees to keep back another horrified scream.

"Master Jace," the driver said in a slightly shaky voice and turned a little to face us. "I think they put up some kind of roadblock up ahea-"

Those were the last words he said. Another choked bang and a bloody hole appeared at the spot where his mouth had been seconds ago. He wasn’t moving. He wasn’t breathing.

I felt Jace shiver.

The car, driverless now, shot forward. It swerved, throwing Jace and I against each other. There was a deafening crash as it hit the side of a building.

Pain, intense and blinding, seared through my left side on impact. Blood flowed down the side of my head and I found myself drifting, drifting...

"Hannah!"

I opened my eyes to see Jace's panicked face staring down into mine.

"Hannah!" he bellowed. "Please don’t pass out on me now. We need to move."

Cut and bleeding himself, he pulled me to himself and kicked open the damaged door. Together we scrambled out. He managed to lift me up and we immediately froze in place.

Surrounding us on every side were huge masked men, all of them holding guns centered on us. I couldn’t see their faces but something told me that they wouldn’t hesitate to kill any one of us.

"Is she the one?" one of the men asked the other, who quickly moved forward, pulled out a phone, glanced at me, then the phone.

Finally, he nodded at the one who asked the question. I felt a chill creep up my spine as I realized that I was the target of these men. Two men had already died because they wanted me. Who were they? Who sent them?

Immediately, one of them grabbed my hair and yanked me backwards savagely. I cried out, biting through my lip in agony. “Let me go!” I screamed.

"Let her go!" Jace roared, taking a step towards me.

A fist crashed into his stomach, driving him to his knees. The guns were now redirected at him.

"Please," I sobbed. "Please..."

"What do we do with him?" another man asked the first, who seemed to be their leader.

"He's useless to us." The man made a slicing gesture against his throat. "Kill him."

"NO!" I screamed, trashing and struggling and almost getting free of the man holding me, not caring anymore if I lived or died.

All that mattered now was saving Jace.

"Stay still, bitch!" the man holding me growled.

Jace's face went slack with shock. His mouth opened and closed a couple of times then he began to struggle to stand.

One of the men took a step forward and pressed a gun to his temple. I felt my eyes start to bug out of my head as his hand started to take up the slack of the trigger. He was going to kill my mate.

And that was the last thing I remembered. Next thing I knew, I was standing with a gun in my bloody hands, six men lying dead at my feet and Jace looking at me like he hadn't seen me before.

I choked on a gasp, staggered back, and flung the gun away from me. What the hell had just happened?

Everything began to spin so fast around me. I felt myself falling.

Jace caught me just in time.

"Stay with me, Hannah," he pleaded in a hoarse, cracked voice. "We're safe now. Everything's going to be fine."

From over his shoulder, I saw two cars pull up with a screech of tortured tires. Cade, Chase and several others got out, and came rushing towards me. Jace's voice so near just a second ago suddenly became so distant.

I closed my eyes and felt the darkness pull me under.
