Chapter 150
HANNAH
Pain.
I felt it the Moment I opened my eyes. Like a rotten infected tooth, it pulsed from the top of my head down to toes gone so numb I could barely feel them.
Why?
I moved my head foward a little. Or tried to. My feet were bound so tightly with thick, heavy chains. So was my entire body. The chains, as think as my wrists, almost squashed my breasts flat. It cut into my neck and I could barely breathe.
I tried to move my hands. The chains firmly secured me to a pole in the middle of a dusty, musty room.
Pieces of broken machinery were littered around the place like old, disused ghosts. Somewhere nearby, water dripped.
The dirty windows let in a little light, enough for me to see that the only door of the room was made of steel. It had a lock that looked brand new and was certainly a new addition to the room.
Just trying to take stock of my environment exhausted me. I closed my eyes, counted to three and forced them open again. Whatever Asher had injected me with had sapped me of all strength.
There was no mercy of forgetfulness for me. Not this time. I remembered all that had happened at the ball. I remembered-
The door handle turned. Slowly. Like whoever was on the other end was trying to keep me in suspense. Finally it opened. In walked Asher with a smile so wide it looked like it would split his face in half if he kept it on for much longer.
My eyes locked on that hated face I had hoped never to see again but noticed a movement behind him. I dragged my eyes away to see Mia.
The traitor.
She was smiling pleasantly the way she had smiled at me at the ball.
I caught a glimpse of a damp dirty, lichen encrusted corridor before the heavy door shut with a slam that echoed around the room.
Asher slowly walked towards me with a swagger. He was still dressed in the tuxedo from earlier. The mask dangled by a string from one hand.
"Well well well," he said in between laughs. "If it isn't sleeping beauty finally deciding to join us. I thought you would never wake up. I thought that maybe I overdosed you with that stuff." His eyes roved over my dress. It had been ripped. Most of it hung in tatters that barely covered my body now. "It's good you're awake now though. Having you unconscious would have spoiled all the fun. What? Are you going to keep staring at me all day? Aren't you going to say something? Anything?"
I opened my mouth. My tongue felt like a dead thing lolling inside it but I would be damned if I would stand there and take Asher's insults like a mute little lamb.
"Fuck off," I spat out.
The words came out a bit slurred but they were clear enough.
Asher's smile was wiped off his face. He took another step forward and got close enough that I could smell his expensive cologne. His hand connected with my cheek with a sound like a pistol shot. My head rocked to the side with the force of the blow.
"Be careful how you speak to me now, bitch," he threatened. "Your life is literally in my hands. This time there will be no mercy for you."
"Mercy?" I said. "You never showed me any mercy before."
"Maybe I didn't. But by the time I'm done with you, you'll realise that me keeping you at my house as my slave and maid was a vacation compared to what is going to happen to you. I promise you one thing, Hannah. You will regret everything you've done to me, my father and Julia who you slaughtered like a goddamn pig on that arena. Do you hear me?"
He grabbed and pulled on my hair so hard tears of pain started to my eyes. I angrily blinked them back.
"I said do you hear me?" he growled.
"How many times have you tried to kill me and failed, Asher? Now your father has sent you to try again, right? Once again, you're being used as a puppet. You're so blind you can't see the people pulling your strings. But then you were always stupid, weren't you?"
Asher banged my head against the pole. Stars burst at the edges of my vision.
"Shut up!" he snarled, spraying me with spit. "Use the little time you have left to reflect on why you should never have crossed me. My father will be here soon with the council men. We will kill you, consume your blood. It will make us stronger, but I suppose you already know that.
