Chapter 245

WILLA

Her tongue stuck out of the side of her mouth as she watched it heat up, then start to boil. I started to ask her something about her pack, then stopped.

According to the professor, this was the most important part of the experiment. I was waiting with my pen poised above my worksheet, ready to note down the result when I thought I had Theron's name.

I started to turn around then checked myself. I bent over, pretended to tie my shoelaces and snuck a look over my shoulder.

At the table behind me, two girls were talking.

The one with the ash-blond hair was saying, "...fucking desperate is what she is. I mean everyone knows Theron is a flirt. Worse than a flirt. He doesn't stay with any girl for more than a month and then this girl... what's her name again?"

"Willa," her friend answered. "Someone in the cafeteria said that's her name."

Me, I thought. They were talking about me.

I looked away just as the blonde started to look in my direction.

The girls were speaking in low tones, but not too low. They wanted me to hear what they were saying. I was sure of it.

"Willa!" The blonde hissed my name like it was a curse. "There's no way Theron approached her first. She must have thrown herself at him. She's a nobody and besides everyone knows Theron doesn't date werewolves. Why would he make an exception for that?"

Now I could feel her angry stare boring holes in my back. It took everything I had to keep staring straight ahead.

"Can't imagine why," said her friend. "If I were a guy, I would never date that."

The blonde snorted laughter. "I give them a week tops and Theron will be on to the next one."

I wanted to excuse myself and leave the lab. I wanted to give this girl a piece of my mind at the same time.

I could see myself turning around in the high stool. Turning around and telling her she had no right to talk about me like that.

Sienna plucked a test tube I wasn't aware I had been squeezing hard enough to shatter, out of my fist. Her eyes behind the safety glasses were kind and understanding.

"Don't let that bother you," she whispered and sat back down beside me. "And yes, I think you should put them in their places once you get the chance. Else it would just continue."

The professor got to our table, saw everything was in order mostly thanks to Sienna. In the last few minutes, I had completely forgotten I was in a practical class.

"Who are they?" I asked Sienna when he had moved on.

Sienna made a face. "The one you should concern yourself about us the blonde, Sylvia. She's my roommate and Theron's ex-girlfriend." She sniffed and jotted something down in her worksheet. "A classic case of sour grapes if you ask me. They broke up because she sort of cheated on Theron. Now she's jealous Theron's hanging out with you. What do people even want?"

I stole a glance at Sylvia again, wondered why Theron would want to make a girl who cheated on him jealous. It just didn't make sense.

I put Sylvia out of my mind and concentrated on the rest of the class. Turned out Sylvia hadn't put me out of hers.

The professor was the first to leave the class. While we students got ready to, someone poked me hard in the shoulder.

I turned and there was Sylvia looking mad as hell. She gave me a look that was supposed to be insulting.

When I didn't take the bait, she said in a voice she tried hard to make casual, "Tell me wolf girl, do you really think for a moment that this... thing you have with Theron will last?"

"It's really none of your business, is it?" I said coolly. "You and Theron are over. Why are you still bothered about who he's with?"

Sylvia's nostrils flared. All pretense of being casual disappeared.

"You think you're so tough," she growled. "You're nothing, wolf girl and trust me, you don't want to mess with me. Ever."

"Noted," I said. "I'll be sure to tell Theron about the threat though."

"Tell me what?"

I felt myself relax. Theron had appeared again at the right time. He draped one arm over my shoulder, pulled me to him.

I let myself lean against him. He was staring at Sylvia who at the moment seemed at a loss for words.

"Don't bug Willa anymore," he told Sylvia, his voice hardening a little. "Or I will be very, very angry. We wouldn't want that, would we?"

He took his arm off my shoulders long enough to take my hand. Together we left the laboratory.
