Chapter 135
HANNAH
Alpha Wallace turned to Jace. "You will be in charge of security. Hire as many bodyguards as possible to monitor things that day, especially Hannah."
"Will do," Jace responded eagerly.
,
Finally, Alpha Wallace turned to Chase. "You will handle the food and drinks." He paused. "I don't have to tell you how important that aspect is."
Chase nodded.
I knew what Alpha Wallace was not saying. Our enemies would want to introduce poison into the food if they were present and if they got the chance to. But all these considerations couldn't dampen my excitement.
This was going to be my first Ice stone ball!
I couldn't remember the last time I had celebrated something. It was always from one problem to the other. This was going to be a nice change.
When her father didn't speak again, Willa moved her food around her plate and said with a pout, "You've given everyone else jobs. What are Hannah and I supposed to do then?"
"Go shopping, of course," Jace said.
Everyone laughed. Even the Alpha smiled.
Pushing his plate away, Alpha Wallace rose to his feet.
"Leaving already? " Willa asked looking up at him.
"I have a meeting with my council members," he explained. "I'll see you all later."
*********
Ten bodyguards, hefty and alert-looking, specially handpicked by Cade had followed Willa and me to the shopping mall. Two of them were outside the mall, three were walking around inside. The others were just a few paces away from us, their eyes, hidden behind dark glasses, watching everything and everyone, their hands ready to pull out weapons at the first hint of danger.
Still, I felt exposed, and uneasy. Maybe it was because what had happened the last time I had wanted to go book shopping with Jace was still stuck in my head.
"Tell me again why we're shopping for clothes when you have a wardrobe full of designer clothes you haven't even worn," I said to Willa.
"Because none of them are good enough. We need a ball dress, Hannah. You read books, yet, you're so unimaginative," she said and tossed a dress at me. "Here. Try this one on."
She followed me to the changing rooms where I put on the dress. By this time, I had lost count of how many I had tried on. The dresses were all so beautiful it was hard to make a choice.
One of the attendants came rushing with a red ball gown.
"I think you'll like this one," the lady said, holding the dress up with a hopeful smile.
Willa took just one look at the dress.
"No," she said.
The attendant's face fell.
"How many red ball gowns are you planning on rejecting, Willa?" I asked her when the woman turned away to look for for yet another dress.
Willa shrugged. "Not my fault. I want something red and extra glamorous, something... unique. Hey. I think this one is really nice."
"You think?" In front of the huge mirror, I turned my body this way and that to check the fitting of the dress.
A group of three girls spotted us and came hurrying up to us.
"Hey, Hannah. Willa," the girl in the lead said. "We were wondering if we could get an invitation to the ball. Please. We would really love to attend."
The other girls nodded eagerly.
"Well... I'm not promising anything, but I'll try to get you invitations," Willa said, smiling proudly.
The girls thanked her, waved to me and left.
"Hey Willa," I said. "How come they already know about the ball? It's been less than two hours since your father told us about it."
Willa's face split into a grin. "I texted some people about it. I couldn't help myself. I was so excited."
I shook my head and rolled my eyes.
An hour later, Willa and I left the mall. We had gotten a few things, but not dresses for the ball. None of them had seemed... right enough.
I was asking Willa where else we could go dress shopping when several cars with rolled-up tinted windows, pulled up to the mall's exit. As though at some unseen signal, the doors all opened at the same time. A troop of men got out of the cars.
I was taken back to the day of the attack due to their movements. A burst of adrenaline surged through me as I tried to get us to safety. I grabbed Willa and started to force her back into the mall. But Willa wouldn't budge.
She was staring at someone slowly exiting the car in front. It was a woman. She stood stiffly as the bodyguards, her bodyguards, flanked her on each side. She looked around with her head held high.
Willa and everyone else bowed. I felt my jaw drop as the woman turned in my direction, and I got a good look at her features.
It was the Lycan Queen.
