Chapter 234

WILLA

He was dressed all in black. His long black lashes were a startling contrast to the pallor of his skin but when you got past that, he was what everyone would describe as extremely good looking.

He looked young, but a bit older than me. His dark hair, hanging over his shoulders, was secured at the tip by a rubber band. His skin exposed to the sun glistened like he was beaded with diamonds, the clear sign of being a vampire.

What was he doing here? Why was he staring at me that way?

His dark eyes followed the progress of a tear running down my cheek, and he said, "Why are you crying?"

I swiped at my cheeks. He waited for me to answer. I didn't.

It was none of his business anyway. Still I felt my cheeks heat up in embarrassment.

Leaning against a tree, he went on as if I had spoken. "Believe it or not, most people actually cry on their first day here. It's almost like a tradition." He chuckled, showing for a moment very sharp teeth framed by blood red lips. "Not that they put that particular fact on the school's website. To the uninitiated, Worchmount is the place where all of your dreams come true. I guess the wool's been finally pulled off your eyes, eh?"

I dug a handkerchief out of my back pocket, scrubbed at my eyes.

"How did you know I'm new?" I asked.

He shrugged. "It's pretty obvious. Written all over you, in fact." He straightened then and I could see he was almost as tall as Lucian. The thought of my mate brought on another pang of sadness. "Come on, let's get out of here."

"Why?"

"I've been in Worchmount longer than you have and trust me, these woods aren't exactly safe. You're deep in them."

I mumbled something about having classes although at this point, sitting in one was the last thing I wanted to do.

The boy looked surprised. "Classes? Didn't you go through your lecture schedule? Classes don't start until tomorrow. Yesterday and today is for first years to-" He hooked two fingers in the air. "-settle in. I'm assuming you did all that yesterday?"

I shrugged. "Maybe."

He grinned. "I'm sure of it. You don't strike me as the kind of girl who let's the grass grow under her feet. Today you're as free as a bird so come with me. You really look like you could use a friend. Let's go have a drink or two. Or three."

He actually took a couple of steps forward. When I didn't follow, he turned, raised one perfectly arched brow.

"What?" he said. "Don't tell me you want to spend the rest of the day here."

"I don't know you," I pointed out.

"Oh that." He showed his teeth in a smile and winked. "I was beginning to think you didn't like me."

Moving with that eerie quickness vampires had, he closed the distance between us and clasped my hand. His was cold to the touch.

"I'm Theron," he said. "Theron Vale, a vampire, but you must have guessed that already." He ran a finger over one smooth pale bloodless cheek. "And you are?"

I almost didn't tell him but then he apparently wasn't a snob like all the others. I clasped his hand tighter then let go.

"I'm Willa Wallace, sister to the Alphas of Icestone pack." I ducked my head a little. "Guess you haven't heard of it too. Everyone I've met so far seems to be from far more interesting places."

"I'm sure Icestone's fine. Also I'm not everyone-"

"Yes... you certainly aren't," I said, eyeing him with interest.

He actually seemed friendly.

"-so how about that drink?"

I went with him because what choice did I have really? My roommates were still trying to pretend I didn't exist. I had no friends. If I had only my thoughts for company, I would bawl my eyes out over Lucian.

Even now I could feel the tears pricking them. Taking a deep breath just as we cleared the woods, I looked up at the bright morning sky barely visible from the branches of the big tree.

"I know just the place," Theron said.

I merely nodded and let him lead the way. He took me to one of the campus bars, picked his way past the small crowd of students to a seat at the back and waved over a waiter.

I ordered a milkshake. Without asking he was served some kind of dark coloured liquid in a glass.

"Tell me about earlier," he urged when I was halfway through my drink. "Food and drinks don't satisfy but at least, your story can."

I told him, starting from the shitty day I  had on my first day at the university and ending with Lucian's rejection. His threat not to tell anyone still hovered at the back of my mind but I thought- screw it!
