Chapter 131
HANNAH
"I think the right word is kidnap, babe," Chase piped in, snorting laughter.
"Yes, well, kidnap it is. All your guards couldn't save you. Too bad. Well, let me get to the point. A little birdie told me that you are planning an attack on me. Also, your son threatened me in school the other day. 'Fifteen days,' he said. I assume that's how much time is left before you strike. Only now, I decided to strike first."
The moment I mentioned Asher's name, Dawson flushed a deep red in anger. That told me two things.
One. He hadn't known that Asher was going to blab about his plan.
Two. There really had been a plan. Alpha Wallace's investigators were right, after all.
I could read Dawson's next question in his eyes, though he was too wary to voice it out now. 'What are you going to going to do with me?'
"I didn't bring you here to kill you," I said.
"Unfortunately," Cade said.
"Though I know if I were in your shoes right now, you wouldn't hesitate to kill me. You underestimate me, Dawson, and this is why I thought it was time to warn you. You probably think that I've killed no one else apart from Julia. Wrong." I told him, drawing closer. "Just a few days ago, I killed six men who tried to kidnap me. I killed them in a few seconds. How's that for raw strength?"
Dawson tried to hide his look of surprise but couldn't.
"Yes," I said, nodding. "That's what I did. I know what you're thinking—that I haven't fully harnessed my skills as the white wolf and that it will be easy to take me out now. I won't ask you to take my word for it. All I would say is if you want to test out that particular theory, just try to hurt me or anyone I love." I patted, almost caressing his bloody cheek. "Do you understand me so far?"
No answer. Just that concentrated stare of hate. I repeated my question. When Jace took a threatening step forward, Dawson nodded.
"Good," I said. "But not good enough. I'll need you to say the words."
"I understand," Dawson choked out.
"Even better. I'm going to let you go, but before I do that, I'll leave you with a little... souvenir, something that will help you remember what we discussed here." I said, a little smile curving my lips.
This felt genuinely better than I had practised.
I took out the silver knife in my back pocket and waved it at Dawson. His eyes widened, this time in panic.
"You wouldn't dare!" he barked.
"Wounds from silver always leave a scar," I told him. "You should know that."
I nodded to Cade and Chase to hold him down.
Dawson kicked, screamed, and cursed but couldn't get away. I placed the knife on his forehead, bore down, and carved the letter B on it.
When I was done, I stepped back. Blood ran down Dawson's face and soaked his shirt. He looked down at it, dazed and shaking.
"The letter B stands for Baker. Whenever you look at yourself in the mirror, I want you to remember every member of the Baker household." I leaned close, and he flinched. "B also stands for bloodbath. If you're not careful, Dawson, there will be a bloodbath in your pack."
**********
I stared at my reflection in the mirror and realized how much I had changed. A few months ago, I hated staring at myself in the mirror. All I could see was a weak, pathetic girl. All I could see was a girl who couldn't even shift and was a mockery to everyone.
Now, that had changed.
I'd realized I was beautiful, strong, and smart.
I walked out of the bathroom and froze when I saw Chase sitting on my bed.
My hand flew to my chest. "Chase! You scared me."
"Sorry," he said, smiling. He jumped to his feet and extended his hand. "I've got something to show you. Come on."
Before I could ask what it was, he grabbed me and swung me up into his arms. I laughed, finding it funny that he was trying to be romantic a few hours after threatening Dawson.
Chase carried me out of my room and into the garden. When we reached the garden, I caught my breath in wonder. On every tree, blade of grass, and flower were tiny twinkling lights. In the dark, they looked like thousands of stars, winking in the moonlight.
"You always talked about wanting to walk in a fairytale-like garden," Chase said, setting me on my feet. "I decided to bring your dreams to life. Do you like it?"
I swallowed past the lump in my throat. Tears, happy tears started to pool in my eyes.
"It's beautiful," I whispered.
"You're beautiful." He pulled me close and pressed his lips on mine.
"You brighten my life, Hannah," he murmured against my lips. "And I would brighten the darkest places for you."
"I love you," I whispered.
"I love you too," he whispered back.
