Chapter 194
HANNAH
I stood at the edge of the football pitch with Willa, watching ripped sweaty jocks on the field in jerseys too tight for them kick a ball around, asking myself how on earth I had agreed to do this.
I had long since stopped trying to stop Willa from fairly bouncing on her feet. From the way she was acting, you would think we were about to meet the most important person in the world.
Still, if doing this would get Devin off my back for good, then I would gladly play Cupid.
Willa nudged me.
"Why isn't he coming?" she said impatiently. "Do you see him?"
I jerked my chin in the direction of the football pitch. A group of simpering giggling girls stood in a circle. In the middle, standing a little above them all was a familiar brown patch of curly hair.
"Over there," I said and Willa craned her neck to get a better look. When that didn't serve, she moved around me. "Your Devin's busy dealing with his flock of admirers. I'm sure when he's done he'll grant us the honour of our presence.*
I might as well have been talking to the wind for all the attention Willa paid me once I had pointed out Devin to her. She had that starstruck expression on her face that every member of Devin's female fan club had. I hated seeing that look on Willa's face but then what could I do?
It made me want to cringe, the way the girls fawned over him. Again I asked myself what they saw in a guy like that.
One of the giggling girls moved away, clutching a notebook to her chest, an expression of bliss on her freckled face. She was barely paying attention to where she was going. On her way past us, she bumped into a couple of people.
Was Devin giving out autographs now? I wondered. I wouldn't put such a thing past him.
The girl leaving had finally given Devin a clear view of his environment. He started to look around and spotted me. His smile widened.
"Excuse me, ladies," I heard him say though there was really no need to speak loudly. The girls were all close and could hear him well. "There's someone I have to see. Catch you all later."
A twinge of pain shot up my arm. Willa was pinching me so hard. I jerked my arm back from her grip.
"What are you doing?" I said, rubbing the sore spot.
"Ooh he's seen us," she murmured, her lips barely moving to form the words. She sounded breathless with excitement. "He's seen us. He's coming this way. Tell me the truth. How do I look?"
"Like an idiot if you don't stop drooling." I snapped.
"Hello ladies," Devin said, striking a pose in front of us.
Striking a pose was what I called it. Why else would he put both hands in the back pockets of his shorts after deliberately ruffling his hair to give him what I thought he imagined was that 'bad boy look.'
It was so ridiculous I wanted to laugh. Probably would have if Devin had not also been annoying the hell out of me.
"You got my note," he said. "Sorry to keep you both waiting. I was playing soccer with the guys and then I got a little... er sidetracked."
One of the girls he had been talking to passed us. She batted her lashes at him, smiled, completely ignored me and Willa. Then she sashayed past, swinging her hips for Devin's benefit.
Now I knew why he had chosen the pitch as a place to meet- to showcase his athletic abilities. I was liking Devin less and less. If only Willa would let go of this stupid idea...
But she didn't. Staring at Devin with an adoring expression, she was on the verge of doing the matchmaking herself. I could see her gearing herself up to say something to Devin.
I said quickly, "Hello Devin. This is Willa Wallace, Jace's younger sister."
Devin's brown eyes lit up with interest. It was sort of a relief to see him focus on Willa instead. "So you're his sister? I've heard about a younger sister but haven't really had the pleasure of actually meeting you before."
"Well you have now," Willa gushed, extending her hand to be shaken. A blush crept up her cheeks the moment Devin touched it with his own. Willa asked, "Do you play football often? If you do, you must be really good."
"As a matter of fact, I am. Are you interested in sports?"
"No," Willa replied. "But I can be if someone worth watching is participating. Someone like you for instance."
That apparently was the right thing to have said as Devin coloured up with pleasure.
