Chapter 094

HANNAH

Willa and I sat at the back of the class, talking about the skill competition. We had a class, but the teacher had not yet shown up.

In the front row, Julia was chatting with her crew.

"I wonder what they'll come up with this year," Willa said. She was flipping through a magazine that highlighted all the things contestants since the beginning of the competition had been asked to do. "Whatever it is, I'm sure a part of it will involve you standing in front of a crowd and talking. You need to practice."

I patted her hand. "Luckily, I have you to help me."

"Of course. Tomorrow, you'll practice talking to me like I'm the crowd."

I was about to tell her okay when the door of the classroom flew open.

Lydia, a short, pimply girl with a talent for gossiping, hurried over to her friend. One look at her, and one could tell that she was bursting with news.

"Guess what?" Lydia said in a carrying voice. "I've got news."

This, of course, sparked a lot of curiosity. A lot of the students stopped talking so they could hear better since Lydia was practically a walking news channel. Only a few, like Julia, who wasn't seated close to Lydia, and her friend went on talking.

"It's about Asher," Lydia continued.

I supposed she was trying to talk quietly, but Lydia had a deep, carrying voice. It was almost impossible for her to whisper except she was talking right in her friend's ear. Which she wasn't.

"Tell me," her friend begged eagerly.

Lydia giggled. "You won't believe it. I heard Asher isn't in school today because..."

"Because?" her friend pressed.

I looked around the classroom. Hardly anyone was pretending not to hear Lydia now. Willa's leg bumped against mine, and I struggled to hide my smile.

"Because he has syphilis from sleeping around," Lydia finished. “I heard his dick is shrinking!”

Julia choked on and spat out the water she had been sipping from her fancy water bottle. She was listening after all.

Lydia's friend gasped. "Oh. Oh. I think it could be true. The other day I saw him scratching his... stuff."

Both girls giggled. Willa hid her laughter with a cough. I grabbed Willa's magazine, hid my face behind it, and burst into silent laughter. This was way better than I imagined.

That was the amazing thing about gossip. Someone would tell someone who would tell someone else, and all those people would create a version of gossip that they liked. As a matter of fact, I was sure someone else in another class was saying the complete opposite of what Lydia had openly shared.

I pulled down the magazine in time to see Julia stomp over to Lydia's desk. She slammed her hands on the desk so hard the girls jumped.

"What-" Lydia began.

"Who told you those stupid lies, and why the fuck are you spreading them?" Julia growled.

Lydia had gone slightly red, but now she stared at Julia, unfazed.

"I'm just saying what I heard. I'm not spreading anything," Lydia retorted. "I heard it in the hallway, though. Everyone is talking about it."

Julia's face went red with anger as she glared at Lydia. I glanced at Heather, who had been talking with Julia earlier. I thought she looked a little... smug.

"What you heard is a bloody lie." Julia's voice shook with barely contained anger. "Asher is not in school because he has pack business to attend to. Watch your mouth. I won't stand here and let you slander the name of the future Alpha."

Lydia rolled her eyes.

"Yeah. Whatever," she grumbled.

Dismissing Julia, she opened her friend's notebook. Julia's hands gripping the desk twitched. People began whispering.

Julia slammed the desk again. She looked around the classroom.

"Listen to me, all of you," she called out. "I'll use the next person I'll catch gossiping about Asher as a scapegoat, and then when Asher comes back to school, he'll make that person suffer too."

The whispering didn’t stop. Everyone was bursting to talk about Asher and his itching…stuff.

I cleared my throat loudly, directing every eye in the room to me. Julia's nose flared.

"Excuse me," I said. "I couldn't help overhearing you and Lydia. I'd just like to clear the air. Asher's penis can't actually shrink from syphilis. That’s a myth. And Asher’s dick is already tiny, so it technically can't get any smaller than it already is. If it did, it would disappear... Okay. I'm done. You can go back to warning everybody now. I just wanted to put that out."

Willa laughed so hard she nearly fell out of her chair. She was the catalyst.

Everyone started laughing their heads off, with most of them trying not to and completely failing.

Julia's eyes blazed as she glared at me.
