Chapter 177

HANNAH

I sat next to my father with my mum on the other end. I had my father's hand in mine. I needed that contact to still convince myself that he was right here with me in the flesh.

I stared at his lined, thin face. His lips moved as he talked to my mother, my mates and the Alpha. I wasn't listening to what he was saying. Not then.

My thoughts were far away. I kept imagining all the places he had been to. All the things he had seen. All he had gone through... for no reason at all.

And it was all because of Dawson. It was funny how everything kept leading up to Dawson and Asher every single time.

My fingers travelled over my father's hand, once strong and firm and a little plump. Now hard and veiny made up of little more than skin, sinew and bone.

It made my blood boil to think about the horrible way he had been forced to live all this time just so he could stay alive. Did Dawson know my father wasn't dead yet?

Probably. In fact it was likely. The man had a strong network of spies doing his dirty work for him.

That would explain why he had done everything he possibly could to get rid of me and my family. That would explain his concentrated hatred that just had to go beyond me defying his son and his literal desire for my blood.

I had honestly thought that carving my initials on his face would make him stop coming after me. He must have been so damn scared of the truth ever getting out. The power he had as Alpha was everything to him. Without it he was nothing but a murdering traitor.

Another question...

Did Asher know what his father had done?

I turned to my mother who was hanging on to my father's every word and wondered. Did she also know? Had she kept quiet about it all this time just so she could prevent more bloodshed?

My father squeezed my hand, drawing my attention back to him.

"I was so proud when I heard you were the white wolf," he said. He really didn't have to say he was proud. I could see it in his eyes when he looked at me. "My little girl I brought up... I almost couldn't believe it but then I did. I knew you were always special. I knew it from the very first day your mother brought you into this world."

I smiled a little.

"All father's say that about their daughters," I pointed out.

"I suppose they do but this dad means every word. There is no one more deserving of the honour to be chosen by the goddess than you, Hannah. You have the right temperament for the power that resides in you. I know you will use it well."

“Stop, dad. You're going to make me cry," I said, only half joking.

Everyone kept telling me I was doing well as the white wolf but hearing it from my dad hit different.

"When I heard about it and was sure you were out of Breakstone which I wasn't able to risk sneaking back to, I tracked you back here to Icestone. I was in a pack so far away from here it took a long time to reach you."

He didn't have to paint the whole picture for me to understand it. I knew he must have taken long detours, that would take him additional days maybe even weeks to his journey to Ice stone. He must have also traveled mainly at night to reduce the chances of detection.

"It took forever but I'm glad I made and I'm finally here with you," he finished.

"I'm glad too," I said.

Alpha Wallace was stroking his beard, already very deep in thought. He was thinking about all my father had said and he had said quite a lot.

Finally, the Alpha raised his head.

"There is a law for situations like this," the Alpha said. My father nodded agreement after a second had passed. As Dawson's former, he knew all about werewolf laws. "Dawson's actions call for a duel for power."

Cade moved impatiently. "Yes but we all know that won't be possible not with the cold war going on. After the war... maybe. Although by then Dawson will most likely be dead already. I'll do my best to personally make damn sure of that."

"That's if I don't get to the bastard first," Jace said.

"The man's a slippery snake!" Alpha Wallace said. "Chances are he'll keep doing what he's been doing... Arming idiots who can't even be bothered to think for themselves to fight his dirty war for him while he hides out with his son plotting his next move if this one fails."
