Chapter 156

HANNAH

My heart stopped then restarted. The council men scattered as the triplets dashed towards them. Jace's flying fists knocked several of them down.

Dawson let out a howl of frustrated rage.

I read murder in his eyes as he said, "You must die today, girl."

He thrust the knife forward. Edward charged, grabbing a piece of heavy rusted machinery as he came. He brought it down on Dawson's head. Dawson fell.

Edward, wide eyed with panic, rushed to me.

"Are you okay, Hannah?" he said in between pants. "Did he hurt you? Please tell me you're okay."

"I'm okay," I said, my words stumbling over each other. "Dawson. Quick! You have to finish him off!"

Edward, suddenly realizing his danger looked at the spot where Dawson had fallen but not a trace of him could be seen. Even Asher had vanished.

Edward looked at the open door, torn, wanting to go after Dawson and Asher but he ripped the keys from the belt of one of the fallen men instead.

The fight was over as soon as it had begun. By the time Edward had released me from the chains, several of the councilmen lucky enough to not have been killed, had been caught. Two men held up Lucius. Another man had Mia. She was barely recognisable with the blood covering half her face.

"Tie the fuckers up," Jace growled, standing up from a man he had just buried a knife in.

My mates. They were all alive!

I must have made a sound because all three of them came running to me, asking if I was okay.

I didn't answer. I was too busy staring at the faces I had thought I would never see again.

"You heard me," I whispered, my eyes swimming with tears.

Jace's arm went around my waist. He didn't seem to notice Edward who still held on to my hand.

"Of course we heard you," Jace said. "We'll always do."

I nodded, closed my eyes. My head swam. I felt unconsciousness calling but there was something I had to do first.

I walked towards Mia on feet I could hardly feel. She was tied up with the others. I stumbled once. Someone caught me.

Chase said in my ear. "Hannah you need to-"

"I have to do this," I said, not looking at him but at Mia.

She knew I was coming for her. Her fear was almost enough to console me for the last forty-eight hours. Almost.

It took a while but I was finally standing over her. I shook off my mate's hands, waved them back.

"I warned you," I said to Mia. "I told you that everyone Asher uses ends up dead. You didn't believe me." I slowly bent so I was squatting beside her. It hurt like hell but I did it. I held her neck firmly in both hands. Her lips trembled. "This is for my friend."

I twisted her neck sharply to the side. The sickening crunching sound told me all I wanted to know. Mia's body slumped forward. As I stood, the blood rushed to my head.

I staggered backwards, found myself falling. Jace caught me. His face blotted out everything else.

"You're safe now," were the last words I heard him say before I blacked out.

*******

I opened my eyes.

Willa was there, talking with Chase, Cade, Jace. And Edward. Willa saw me first. Then everyone did.

My mates rushed to my bedside. They hugged me. I hugged them back, inhaling their scent, letting my senses take in every detail of them. It seemed I had not held them or told them how much they meant to me often enough.

Chase's eyes were stained with tears when he pulled back.

"You're alive," he said, like he could hardly believe it.

I looked past Edward smiling down at me, Willa holding my hand, Cade stroking my hair and Jace still hugging on to me fiercely. There was someone else that wasn't here.

"We didn't tell your mother about what happened," Cade said, reading my thoughts. "We didn't want her to get scared."

I sighed in relief. "Thank you. That was a good decision."

Willa shoved Jace aside and pulled me into a hug.

I buried my face in her shoulder. "I swear I won't ever doubt you again. I'll listen and do anything you say."

Willa chuckled, planted a kiss smack in the middle of my forehead. "I heard what happened to that bitch, Mia."

She squeezed my hand to show she approved. I nodded to Edward. He nodded back.

"You must be starving!" Cade suddenly exclaimed. "We should get you some food." He beckoned to a maid. "Get her something from the kitchens. Quickly."

The maid hurried out. My mates sat on either side of me. There was no chair for Jace so he sat on the bed instead.

As I looked around the room, I couldn't help but realize that this was my family. Right there in the room with me.
