Chapter 195

HANNAH

He said something in response, something I didn't catch because both of them were moving away as they talked. As I watched, Willa suddenly looked over her shoulder and gave me a thumbs-up sign before focusing her attention on Devin once more.

I went over to one of the benches and sat, waiting for them to finish so Willa and I could get back inside. Thirty minutes later, they both were still talking.

I glared at Willa's back, hoping she would turn around. She didn't. She just kept being absorbed with whatever Devin was saying to her.

I whipped out my phone upon recalling that at this time of the day, Chase usually had a free period.

'I'm bored,' I typed. 'I could use your company if you're free.'

'Sure. Where?'

'The football pitch.'

Chase came to the pitch a couple of minutes later, immediately spotting me.

"What are you doing here?" he asked, lowering himself onto the space beside me. "Want to try out for the team?" he teased.

I rolled my eyes at him. "As if! I came here with Willa. Been watching her flirt with her crush for the past half hour."

Chase glanced at his sister and chuckled. "Willa's ridiculous sometimes, you know. Sometimes she goes through these phases where she has the hots for some guy. When that dies away, she's off to the next one she can idolize. Don't worry about it. Hey, I heard about what happened last night at the party. Almost couldn't believe it."

"Why does everyone keep saying that?" I said, struggling not to smile.

"Because it wasn't a bit like you. Heard the dean asked you to do community service as punishment. True? Or was that Jace pulling my legs."

"True," I sighed. "He seemed to think that we deserved a lot more punishment since Jace is the Alpha's son and I am the Alpha's... ward."

Chase suddenly brightened. "Here's an idea! My year was given a project to work on. It involves sample collection so my group and I are going on a camping trip soon. You can join us if you want. Want to tag along?"

I beamed. "Of course I'll join you guys."

********************

I walked towards Willa's room. I was going to ask her how things had gone with Devin. At school, I ended up leaving her and Devin to it since they talked for hours.

What had they been discussing anyway? I wondered.

I imagined a conversation with Devin would involve him yapping about himself nonstop.

I was so deep in thought I didn't see the person rounding the corner until I had bumped into him.

"So sorry-" I began, then stared.

It was not a guard as I had thought. Looking right at me with a sheepish smile on his face was Devin.

I screamed and jumped backwards.

"Ssh," he whispered, his eyes darting around the corridor. "Please keep it down. I promise I'm not a ghost."

I exhaled and inhaled through my mouth. The exercise helped me calm my racing heart a little.

"What are you doing here?" I hissed, thinking for a moment that he had snuck in here to see me.

If he had, I would tell Jace about it so he could put an end to this madness once and for all.

"Well? Are you going to talk or should I call someone to make you talk?" I said.

"Calm down, Hannah," he said coolly. Now he had gotten over his initial fright, he was acting like he belonged here. "Willa invited me over."

"You're joking!" I said, scarcely believing my ears.

How could Willa invite him over to the house after just meeting him for the first time? Now I was really beginning to think she had literally gone crazy over this pompous ass.

Devin raised a brow. "I assure you I'm not. Anyway, there's no need for you to get upset. I was already on my way out."

"You better get out now." I snapped. "And don't come back."

I watched him the way you would watch a squirmy worm. When I heard the front door open, I hurried over to the window overlooking the courtyard and watched him get into his car. If his name or picture had been spray-painted on the vehicle, I would not have been surprised.

When he had driven away, I marched up to Willa's room. I shoved open the door without knocking.

Willa had a sappy grin on her face. She took one look at me but was too far gone to notice the annoyance stamped there.

"Willa-" I began.

"Oh my gosh!" she interrupted, pressing her palms to her flushed cheeks. "I think I'm officially in love."

"No, you're not," I snapped, glaring down at her. "What you are is officially crazy."
