Chapter 139

HANNAH

Willa met her stare. "Let me dumb it down for you. Hannah is my brother's mate. Cade is in charge of the invitations and Cade would rather see you in hell than at the ball after he finds out you just insulted his mate. Got it?"

"Let's get the hell out of here, girls," one of the girls said to the others.

"Nice one, Willa," Mia said admiringly as they walked away, swaying their hips.

"Thanks, Willa," I said. She always had my back, no matter what.

"What a bunch of losers," Willa said with a grin. "They actually think walking like they have something stuck up their butts makes them look cool."

We burst into laughter, and at the same time, the PSA came on.

"Attention students," the principal announced. "An important guest has arrived. Everyone return to your classes. Those qualified for the pageant, come to my office right away!"

Chairs were scraped back as students began to leave the cafeteria.

"I wonder who the important guest could be," I said to Willa and Mia before we parted.

"Could be the Lycan Prince. Again," Willa said, not sounding happy about it.

I felt a sharp pang in my chest, remembering Cade's warning yesterday. He had been so upset, but I managed to calm him down with loads of kisses and, well, a blowjob.

The other girls were gathered around the principal's office when I arrived. The first thing I noticed was the guards. Lots of them. Their presence gave me an idea of who the 'important guest' was.

And I was right.

The Lycan Queen marched out of the principal's office, looking all haughty and arrogant. There were gasps and murmurs. Everyone bowed. I quickly did the same.

When I raised my head, I saw Edward at her side. The queen said something to the principal. He nodded and bowed so quickly that his glasses nearly slid off his nose.

"Line up, girls," he called out. "The queen wants to inspect you all."

There was a bit of a scuffle as we tried to form a single line.

"No," the queen said. "All stand in front, facing me."

In a few seconds, we had done as she asked. She nodded her approval. I was the last on the line, and I wished something would happen to take her away before it got to my turn.

What on earth was she inspecting us for anyway? To point out we were not beautiful enough for her son?

Oh please.

With her hands clasped behind her back, the queen stepped in front of the first girl and stared at her for a long time. Without comment, she moved to the next girl. And the next.

Edward was staring but kept his distance.

The queen reached a girl wearing glasses.

"Get rid of her," she said, pointing to the girl's glasses. "This is a pageant. The girls should be perfect, not defective."

Edward flushed but said nothing.

The principal cleared his throat. "Of course. You're right, your majesty." To the girl, he said, "I'm sorry, but you won't be participating in the pageant anymore."

The girl's lips trembled. She bowed. As she hurried past me, I heard her sob.

The Lycan queen inspected the next girl. By this time, all the girls were a bundle of nerves. I was nervous too, but for an entirely different reason.

I could hear the sighs of relief from any girl she passed without comment. She reached a girl with freckles on her face.

"Out!" the queen ordered.

With a frightened whimper, the girl scurried away.

"You slouch," she said to the next girl. "Are you disabled, girl?"

The girl shook her head.

"No, your majesty," she murmured.

"And yet you cannot stand up straight. Hmm. Tell me about your status in your packs. You!"

The first girl said she was the daughter of a small pack's Beta. The others followed suit.

"And you?" the queen said to a dark-haired girl who hesitated.

"I'm—I'm an Omega," she said, hanging her head.

The queen recoiled. "An Omega?" She turned to the principal, who had gone white as a sheet. "You selected the worst kinds of girls for my son. What is an Omega doing here? Out you!"

The girl was already hurrying away before the queen gave her order. She kept shooting frightened glances over her shoulder at the bodyguards as though scared they would arrest her.

"The rest of you will do," the queen said grudgingly after her final inspection.

She had kicked three girls out. That left seven of us to contest in three days.

I started to relax, thinking she had forgotten me, and then I smelled her expensive perfume. My head jerked up. She was right in front of me.

"Have you thought about what I said yet?" she asked.

The words got stuck in my throat. I shook my head.

"You have three days," she said, and I heard the threat in her voice.
