Chapter 338

THERON
I stared at the lighted screen of my laptop and forced myself back to the task at hand. The words and images blurred together.
I blinked and everything came back into focus.
I had that dull lethargic feeling one got after sitting at a spot and staring at a screen for too long. And no wonder, I had been at it for-
I shook back my sleeves, glanced at my watch.
"Eight!" I exclaimed in surprise.
I had been working on this for more than two hours.
Two hours and nothing to show for it, I thought bitterly. I punched a key to refresh the gossip blog page.
Then I started again, reading the posts from the most recent one about a popular jock's recent breakup with his girlfriend.
One would have thought that bit of news would replace Willa's as the most talked about thing on campus, but no.
Willa's story was still a trending topic. It was still getting much more views, reactions and comments than the recent post.
My fingers curled into fists as I read the part where they had called her a 'side piece'.
I did not bother opening the comment section. The few comments I had gone through when the post was first made were vile.
I scrolled down the page, reading older posts and went on till I got to the ones of the past year. They were mostly posts about breakups, who was dating who, who was screwing who, the occasional stuff about doping and once a hint that someone had cheated in their final exams.
One thing I had noticed was that the person's written about were most times referred to by only their initials.
Sometimes, initials weren't even used. Just hints thrown around so everyone else could know who was being referred to.
The post about Willa was different.
Even her name had been written in caps. Her picture had been posted. Whoever had done this had wanted to make sure even an imbecile knew it was Willa being referred to.
This seemed... personal.
I leaned forward, my nose almost touching the screen as I looked for words or phrases from old posts similar to the one about Willa.
A while later, I sat back, frustrated. I had not been able to spot a pattern.
Also unfortunately, the site had no known owner, so I could even threaten or bribe anyone to give me the names of the blog's top contributors.
No matter. I would not give up.
Willa meant so much to me. I must have been blind and stupid not to have realized that sooner.
She thought she only needed me as a friend now but she was wrong.
I was sure she had felt something for me when we had been pretending to be a couple. The problem was Lucian. He had stepped in and confused her with his charm and his claim as her mate.
I scoffed at the idea of her mate bond with Lucian keeping us apart.
"Bloody ridiculous!" I said to the empty room.
What was a mate bond anyway? Some kind of stupid wolfy connection that was supposed to bind you to a person for life.
What if the person in question was a good-for-nothing asshole like Lucian? What then?
It was all shades of wrong for a girl like Willa to be bound to a guy like that. I for one wouldn't let it happen.
Besides, a mate bond could always be broken. It had been done before and could be done again.
The first step was finding out who had written this shit about her. When I made whoever it was pay, and did what Lucian could not do for her, Willa would finally realize how much she needed me.
I closed my eyes and pictured it.
Willa thanking me with tears in her eyes and asking what she could do in return.
Me telling her all I needed were three dates. Before the three dates were over, she would fall hopelessly in love with me.
And then when I took her in my arms and asked her to be my girlfriend, she would lean close and say-
The shrill sound of my phone beeping forced me out of my daydream. My eyes flew open.
I blinked, realized I had actually been dozing off. I hunted about for my phone, found it half hidden under the sheets.
On the lock screen were the words 'Unknown number'.
I frowned.
Who would be sending a message with an unknown number and why? And then I remembered.
I had put out information that I needed any information that would lead me to the author of the post. I had even hinted at payment to attract those that had info.
I quickly unlocked the phone.
