Chapter 090

ASHER

I sighed. There was a tension headache pulsing at the back of my skull. My eyes felt heavy and sore. I wanted to end this conversation and maybe try to get some sleep, which I hadn't been able to last night. I probably wouldn't be able to, though.

"I don't know if you missed the other part of my explanation, Julia," I said. "When the bond tie is broken, someone has to die. Hannah will only die if she's the weak wolf in this equation."

"So?"

I glared at her. "Sometimes you make me think you have bubblegum for brains. Haven't you noticed Hannah's behavior recently? How she's grown confident and doesn't seem afraid of anything or anybody? Remember the fight at school? What if she's not the Hannah we knew then? What if her wolf has gotten stronger?"

Julia waved her hand around. "Oh please. Get real, okay? It's ridiculous to think that girl can ever be stronger than you. Remember, you have an Alpha wolf. What's stronger than an Alpha wolf? Nothing. As for the fight, I admit that we underestimated her. She used the element of surprise against us. Also... the triplet's father would probably have had her trained to throw a few punches around so she could defend herself. Inside, she's as weak and pathetic as ever. The bitch can't even shift properly."

Julia had a point. A good one. Maybe Hannah had managed to stand up to us because we underestimated her. And of course, she was living in Icestone Pack now, which meant they would train her like other pack members. They were quite known for having the strongest warriors.

I felt the load I had been dragging around lift a little.

"Are you sure about this?" I asked her.

"Positive. There's no way Hannah's wolf is stronger than yours."

She shifted a little so I could stand and then stood with me.

This Hannah situation was going to end. For good.

"Okay, I'm ready," I said. "I'll destroy the bond tie now."

Julia nodded once. I saw a look of purpose in her eyes that I was sure was in mine.

"I'll come with you," she said.

**************

He handed me the knife.

"It's easy," my father said with a glance at Julia, who stood beside me. "Cut your palm deep enough to draw blood and say the words, 'I, Asher Dawson, reject Hannah Baker as my mate and hereby destroy the bond tie between us. That's all."

Julia drew in a breath and smiled at me. "Yeah, sounds pretty easy."

I smiled too as I imagined what those three would do when Hannah suddenly dropped dead. I would give a lot to see their faces. And it was even better because I didn’t have to go out of my way to hurt her. Her death would be a mystery.

"Focus, Asher," my father said quietly.

With a start, I realized I had been gripping the knife tightly and staring off into space.

I shook the sleeve of my jacket back and drew the knife against my palm. It was so sharp it went through the skin like butter.

Droplets of blood dripped onto the tiles as I said the words exactly the way my father had said them.

“I, Asher Dawson, reject Hannah Baker as my mate and hereby destroy the bond tie between us.”

When I was done, he nodded and threw me a rag.

"Wrap your hand in that," he instructed. "And remember not to tell anyone about this."

His eyes flickered at Julia. He had made an exception for me telling Julia but had not been too happy about it.

"Is that all?" Julia asked.

"Yes," he replied. "Very soon, we will get the news that Hannah Baker is dead. Pains me I won't get to torture her as I want... but then we can't always get what we want."

I laughed. I felt so relieved, I was almost giddy with it. "I'll be looking forward to the news then."

Julia took my arm as we turned to leave. I took one step towards the door and stopped.

“Ahhhhh,” I groaned as a sharp pain hit me right in the head.

There was a loud ringing sound. It was coming from inside my head, accompanied by the pain. It grew louder and louder until it blotted everything else.

Was I going deaf?

Pain, sharper than anything I had felt before, exploded in my skull with the force of a bomb. It was worse than the brief one; I felt seconds again, and I felt my knees weaken. Screaming, I clapped my hands to my head.

"Make it stop!" I shrieked. "Please make it stop!"

My father bolted out of the chair. Before he could reach me, I was on the floor, shouting and crying and cursing.

He shouted to be heard over my screams. "Asher, what is it? What's going on?"

I wanted to tell him. I couldn't. The pain had increased. It was all I could focus on. It was intense, blinding, and deafening.

My father turned to Julia, who was staring at me, frozen in shock.

"Quick, girl!" he barked. "Get the family doctor now!"
